Grade 8 Global Connections PBL – Social Development Goal 4 Quality Education
Topic 1: Introduction and vocabulary
Students will become familiar with the vocabulary and concepts of the unit. They will collaborate to discover new terms and research their meanings. We will also discuss their importance in global issues.
Topic 2: Social Studies – Digital Learning
Students will be reading a text dealing with technology in education. It deals with the changes over time, including how Covid-19 which changed learning overnight. The article also focuses on Quality Education and how poorer nations are struggling to keep up with digital learning. It highlighted the large difference between the education given in developed nations and the rest of the world. Students will be presented with comprehension questions on the reading. Following the article, we will have a discussion on digital learning and the future of education.
Topic 3: Quality Education Geography
Students in groups will choose a country. They will use websites like UNICEF to research the education systems in their countries. They will start with information including: population, languages, and percentage of students in school. Then they move into the deeper questions about gender divisions, literacy rates, and graduation numbers. They will put this into a PPT and present it to the class. Students will have a discussion about how education systems compare and what issues affect all school.
Topic 4: Quality Education Final Project
The final project will have two parts
a) Students will prepare a basic lesson plan to present to others in an online video call. Students will present an example of Quality Education in an attempt to share it with others and promote learning. They will also discuss the Taiwanese education system. Our hope is to share these with students in other countries. Students will have a chance to discuss Quality Education around the world.
b) Students will participate in the Global Goals Project in leadership roles. Changhua schools involved in the project will have a video call in February. Grade 8 students will assist in setting up video calls between the school. They will also encourage students and promote dialogue.
