SDG 7

Fall 2021 Grade 7 Global Connections PBL – Social Development Goal 7 Affordable and Clean Energy

Topic 1: Introduction and vocabulary

Students will become familiar with the vocabulary and concepts of the unit. They will collaborate to discover new terms and research their meanings. We will also discuss their importance in global issues.

Topic 2: Geography, Math, and Data

Students in groups will choose a country to research. They will use the “World Bank” website to research about energy use in their country. They will focus on the access to clean energy data. Once they have chosen their topic, they will create a graph to map out the information. They will also fill out the relevant information on the graph including title and details. The graph will provide relevant information on the country’s energy usage.

Topic 3: Clean Energy Science Project

Students in groups will design a new device that allows people to cook without electricity. They will have to design a PPT explaining how it works, the environmental benefits, and why it would be successful. They also need to consider the impact that traditional cooking has on air quality in Taiwan and globally.

Topic 4: Clean Energy History

Students will focus on reading about the evolution of cooking fuels. It will start with fire and move up to the microwave oven. Students will work on their reading comprehension while reading these details. They will be challenged to answer a series of questions about the reading. Following the reading, students will have a discussion on their knowledge of cooking fuels and their impact on the current world.

Topic 5: Clean Energy Final Project

Students in groups will brainstorm a new design for a solar oven. The focus of their design is that it is environmentally friendly. Cooking without causing harm to the environment is the goal for this unit. They need to consider how their design could be distributed to families who cook around the world that don’t have access to clean and affordable energy. Students will consider the global impact an oven like this could make. They will address the air pollution issues globally and discuss the impact of cooking on pollution. Finally, they will assemble it as a team then try cooking an item in it. They will share their conclusions with the class. Following the project, students will also reflect on the project and their role in it.
