SEP 5 – Instructional Strategies
One area where I feel confident is Instructional Strategies.
Through my coursework and classroom experience, I have learned how important it is to use multiple ways to help students understand content. The standard emphasizes using varied instructional strategies so that all learners can participate and demonstrate understanding.
One artifact that shows this is my 6th grade Chinese Immersion Language Arts lesson plan.
In this lesson, I used several strategies such as:
modeling vocabulary with visuals and acting
guided practice with sentence frames
partner discussion
small group activities and learning stations
These strategies allowed students with different language levels to participate and build confidence.
Working in a multilingual classroom has also helped me see how important scaffolding and repetition are for student learning.
I believe this experience has prepared me well to design instruction that supports diverse learners.
SEP 3 – Assessment
Another area where I feel prepared is Assessment.
This standard focuses on using assessment to monitor student learning and guide instruction.
One artifact that demonstrates this is my Special Education Evaluation and Assessment assignment, where I practiced collecting and analyzing student behavior data.
In this project I used:
structured observations
progress monitoring tools
a functional behavior assessment
Through this process I learned how data can help teachers understand why behaviors occur and how to design appropriate supports.
In addition, during my literacy coursework I used weekly lesson logs to record student progress and adjust instruction.
These experiences helped me understand that assessment is not just for grading.
It is also a tool to guide instruction and support student growth.
SEP 7 – Collaboration and Leadership
One area where I want to continue developing is Collaboration and Leadership.
This standard emphasizes working with families, colleagues, and specialists to support student learning.
Although I have experience communicating with parents and collaborating with teachers, I would like to gain more experience participating in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary teams, and collaborative planning.
As a future special education teacher, collaboration is extremely important.
My plan to improve before student teaching:
observe more IEP meetings
ask special education teachers about how they coordinate services
learn more about the roles of different specialists such as speech therapists and psychologists
During student teaching I hope to:
participate in IEP meetings
collaborate with my cooperating teacher on lesson planning
communicate with families about student progress
These experiences will help me become more confident working within a collaborative team.
SEP 8 Racial Consciousness and Reflection
Another area where I want to continue growing is Racial Consciousness and Reflection.
This standard encourages teachers to reflect on how race, culture, and identity influence teaching and learning.
As someone who grew up in China and later immigrated to the United States, learning about racial identity and systemic inequities in American education has been a new and sometimes challenging experience.
Through coursework such as Diversity in Education, I began reflecting more deeply on how culture and identity shape students' experiences in school.
However, I still want to continue learning how to apply this understanding in real classroom situations.
My plan to improve before student teaching:
read more about culturally responsive teaching
observe how experienced teachers discuss culture and identity in the classroom
During student teaching I hope to:
design lessons that include multiple cultural perspectives
reflect on how my own background influences my teaching
create a classroom where all students feel respected and valued
