Game Mechanics
Players start the game as new social media users who are striving to gain popularity by posting different kinds of content, including spreading misinformation. Players can post, like, and report other players. The winner will be the one who has the most viral contents on social media.
Overview
Likes and Lies is best played with 3-5 players. Although the game focuses on a global issue, misinformation on social media, the content within the game is primarily targeted towards ages 12-30 of all genders in Canada and the US.
Setup
The setup of the game is simple.
Place the board in the middle of the table and set the number of player pawns needed at the start of the board.
Place the Caption, Content and Event cards next to the board.
Distribute a deck of Intent cards and one Like token for each player.
Each player picks up 5 Content cards and keeps them hidden.
Game Procedure
To start each round, each player chooses what the intention behind their post is using the Intent cards and sets that card aside, hidden.
A player reveals a Caption card and each player chooses one of their 5 Content cards that matches best with the caption to place in the middle to post.
Once all players have posted, the cards are revealed.
On a count of three, all players place their tokens on the Content card they like the most. The player who receives the most Like tokens can move 5 steps forward on the board. If they land on an Event space, they draw an Event card.
The winner of that round then gets to choose if they want to report one of the posts that were posted. If they reported someone who posted misinformation that person moves back 2 steps, and if it was a misreport, the winner moves back 2 steps.
All players pick up a new Content card to add to their deck
The round then restarts until a winner is declared for the game.
