Effective teaching requires various procedures from the preparation to the execution of the plan. My teaching method starts with preparation which includes lesson planning and preparing my materials. Designing a lesson starts with looking for materials and references for my topic. The preparation also includes setting learning objectives, activities, and assessments. I usually prepare a PowerPoint presentation for my lessons. After the preparation is the application of the plans inside the classroom. I start with the introduction where I capture the students attention with an icebreaker. This helps me to engage my students and keep their curiosity for a new lesson. After that, I present the learning objectives so that the students can also be aware about the things that they have to meet or accomplish after the end of the lesson. After the introduction, I proceed with the presentation which includes the delivery of the content of my lesson. I use a discussion method to explain the topic. I also do modeling where I provide and demonstrate examples to my students for a deeper understanding. I also encourage active learning which is why I pose questions during the discussion. This makes the class interactive and it also serves as a place for the students to share different ideas. After the discussion, I provide activities that reinforce their learning. I also give them feedback about their work so the students will know their weaknesses and the things they still need to improve on. After the assessment, I proceed to the evaluation where I check their overall comprehension of the lesson. Lastly, I assign homeworks where they can apply the knowledge that they have gained and strengthen their skills.
Time management is an important skill in teaching. For every class, I am given 80 minutes to finish my lesson and the activities of my students. In my lesson plan, I usually indicate the number of minutes that I would spend on each part. The introduction part usually takes around 10-15 minutes including the motivation, and the discussion part is the longest. I also make sure that I give enough time for the students to accomplish the tasks and activities that I am giving them. Having a plan for my time in teaching helps me to successfully execute my lesson plan. On the other hand, I also organize the activities that I give inside the classroom. I make sure that I give varied activities to my students which can target different skills such as reading comprehension, speaking, listening, and writing. I also consider my students' strengths and interests when I am crafting their activities.
For my classroom management, I make sure that I try to make a positive learning environment for my students. At the beginning of my meeting with my students, I try to establish rules and routines. I encourage everyone to listen when someone is talking, and to respect everyone inside the classroom. In addition, I also encourage them to always make sure that the physical classroom is neat and organized before starting the lesson. During the discussion, I also make sure that the students are comfortable. They can share their ideas without the fear of being wrong or being judged, and in addition, I always praise them and give them feedback whenever they answer. Simply saying "very good" or "thank you for sharing your ideas" helped me to build a meaningful and positive learning environment with my students which made teaching and learning more fun and comfortable.
There are multiple challenges that I faced during my stay in the school. I had to make a lot of adjustments in teaching. One problem that I encountered is the difference between the curriculum and approaches in teaching between my country and UPI Labschool. Nonetheless, I slowly figured it out and I have learned how to adjust with teaching the students. I also had to be always prepared and have a plan B with my teaching plan in case any problem may occur. Overall, I have learned to adapt and adjust throughout my stay in the school.
