Teaching English inside the classroom requires different strategies and approaches to meet the needs of the students. One method I have observed from my cooperating teacher is her use of Communicative Language Teaching. She focuses on communicating with the students and connecting the lesson in their real-life experiences. The interaction between the teacher and the students makes it easier for them to achieve their learning objectives. In addition, task-based learning and cooperative learning was also employed inside the classroom. Students were given different tasks after every lesson where they have to apply the topic that they have discussed for the day. There were also times when the teacher lets the students work in groups to promote cooperation among the students. The teacher also uses code switching to explain the lessons clearly. She tries to explain the lesson using their native language, and she also lets the students recite using their L1. This is a good practice inside the classroom to establish a good connection between the teacher and the student.
Learning materials are important tools that help teachers to achieve their goals. My cooperating teacher uses Pearson's Gold Experience and New Frontiers Book as her reference for teaching Bahasa Inggris inside the classroom. The book has different levels: B1 and B2. She uses the book with a more advanced level for the Bilingual classes, and the other books are used for the Tauhiid, Social, and Science classes. These books are crafted with different levels and proficiency in the English language. Furthermore, it also targets the different micro and macro skills such as reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. The book contains lessons and lectures as well as activities to expand the students' vocabulary, help them with reading comprehension, and provide different activities for learning. The book also contains targets or objectives per unit or lesson that is expected for the learner to achieve at the end of the lesson. The teacher also crafts her own PowerPoint presentation that includes materials from other references that may be helpful for the students.
The sources of learning used by the teacher include information from lectures, textbooks, visual aids, and online resources. The teacher uses textbooks and other learning materials to provide information about the topic or lesson for the day. It serves as a reference for the teacher. In addition, practical exercises are also given to strengthen the foundation of students' learning. The teacher also uses different visual aids such as charts, graphs, and multimedia presentations to enhance learning inside the classroom. Online resources are also used by the teacher to meet the needs of the students. The teacher utilizes educational platforms, websites, and digital content for lesson planning. In the classroom setting, the teacher uses the projector, television, and speaker to deliver her lesson.
The teacher uses different assessment tools to assess students' performance inside the classroom. She uses project-based assessments where the students are required to demonstrate and apply their knowledge that are similar to real-world tasks or problems. In addition, she also uses presentations and performance tasks to assess the students. Presentations require the students to present their knowledge about the topic to the class which also enhances their speaking skills. On the other hand, performance tasks are given individually or by group. This requires the students to solve real-world problems applying the concepts that they have learned. The different authentic tasks that my cooperating teacher utilized inside the classroom goes beyond memorization of the lesson. It challenges the students to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.
