The purposes of this practicum were met throughout the duration of my stay in the school. I have learned about new pedagogical skills in teaching and I have learned new strategies that I can adapt in the Philippines. In addition, I was also able to learn about the culture of Indonesia and its people. I have gained new insights about teaching the English language inside the classroom.
The procedures of the practicum starts with preparation and lesson planning. The lesson plan includes several parts which start with the learning objectives, the topic, and the materials that will be used. The teaching materials are also subdivided into parts which includes the software and applications that will be used in teaching. The preliminaries include the icebreaker before the presentation of the new lesson. The discussion part includes the strategy that the teacher will use in the lecture. After that, the assessment is done before, during, and after the lesson to check whether or not the students understood the concept. The evaluation is given to check overall comprehension at the end of the whole lesson. Assignments are also given to reinforce learning and to provide supplemental activities that enhance the students' skills.
The outcomes of the practicum include gaining new experiences in insights in education specifically in teaching senior high school students. I also developed new skills and learned new pedagogical strategies that I can use in teaching the students in my country. It helped me to develop as a student teacher and gain confidence. I also learned a lot of things about Indonesia and its culture.
The challenges I encountered during my practicum include language barriers, cultural differences, and diverse educational systems. I had to learn and understand my cooperating teacher's local teaching methods which works best for the students in Senior High School. In addition, it was also a challenge to teach students from different programs such as Tauhiid, Social, Science, and Bilingual classes. For every class, I had to come up with a different strategy and approach to make sure that my teaching was effective for them. In addition, I also had to design different lesson plans for each class because they have different levels and abilities. It takes time to also adjust with a new environment but it was all worth it in the end.
The facilities and the teaching methods used by the teachers in the Laboratory School are impressive. They are very technologically advanced with projectors, television, and speakers inside the classroom. They are also equipped with cctv cameras which provide additional security for the students. Overall, the laboratory school provides quality education with all their facilities and teaching methods that help the students to equip the necessary skills they need as they move to the next level of their education.
Overall, the teaching methods and facilities of the Laboratory School are already impressive, but I would just suggest to also give emphasis to the importance of teaching English in earlier years to enhance their skills in the language specially for communication and education. This can help students to build their confidence and open new opportunities for them to also study abroad.
