My sophomore year of high school, I was offered a chance to run a faith based group for first and second grade girls. It was an incredible opportunity that taught me a lot about my innate passions. As I mentioned before, I grew up with several different occupations in mind. I wanted to be everything between a professional chef and a marine biologist. More recently, however, I discovered my love of teaching. I've babysat for as long as I can remember--being the oldest of four makes you the instant babysitter from age 9 and up--but after observing and later taking over the Hands of Faith groups, I realized that teaching children was what I was called to pursue. I included Hands of Faith in my portfolio because it has acted as additional practice for me to lead a class of students. In fact, my friend and I lead the sessions without an adult to tell us what to do: we are purely leading by our own instincts and observations. I believe this has taught me how to act with children under many different circumstances without the safety net of an adult present. I am very thankful for this opportunity to lead Hands of Faith for two years.
