Task 1 – Begin by listing some big questions about education. I have listed some areas of focus to help you: Purpose- What is the purpose of Education, for children to learn to pass a test or to learn how to grow as a person into society?
Curriculum- Why are teachers not trusted to create a curriculum for all but rather government officials who don’t have that experience?
Pedagogy- Who has the right to say what you’re doing in your classroom is right or wrong and if it can be done better?
People- Who should be involved in a child’s education, just teachers or should parental involvement be more frequent?
Context- Where is the best place to educate? A classroom? Outdoor open learning? Or is there an argument for both?
Government and policy- Why do the government decide what happens in education? Don’t those in schools know more?
Task 3 - Write a reflective piece comparing yourself to the teacher in the film. Comment on the kinds of questions the film raises, for you, about schools and education.
School of Rock
As a teacher, he makes each child believe that they are special and brings out each individual quality of the children. The children are influenced by his personality as being different from their average teacher, he finds a way to teach to their strengths. The film questions whether certain methods of teaching are ignored despite there being evidence that it can benefit children's esteem and confidence. The film also questions whether experiential learning can be beneficial as Mr S takes the children to the battle of the bands competition, showing their musical talents in a competitive environment. It helps them learn how you can learn despite not winning something, but that what matters is your own personal progress.
