Sampling Distributions Bridge-in Question
Video: My DISC 1011 - Introduction to Probability and Statistics Lecture where I employed this "Temperature Check" at the start of the class. I also use Collaborative Learning for students to engage in an interactive activity to promote learning.
Temperature mapping is a process of identifying the differences and changes in temperature that occur within a designated storage area. A temperature mapping exercise for any new temperature-controlled storage area shall be carried out before its use.
I apply the concept of temperature mapping to my courses by using the idea of a temperature check.
Ice-breakers and Polls are Course “Temperature Checks” which are intended to provide knowledge, attitudes and/or perceptions of students using Live feedback.
As an educator I have incorporated technology tools to provide real-time feedback from students.
For tips on how I incorporate tech tools useful in my classroom and see my reflection for the impact on my students' learning.
This form of formative and real-time feedback, has been useful to allow me to gain a sense of the class environment. More so, research indicates that even a brief check-in with students about their feelings has major advantages (Klem & Connell, 2004; Zengaro & Zengaro, 2022; Burke et. al., 2022). This is because by creating a word cloud from single-word responses, educators can help students understand that they are not alone, by providing them with a brief visual summary of how they are feeling in comparison to their peers (Hommel & Cohen, 2024). Particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic and the move to fully virtual classes, I appreciated the use of these mechanisms to inform me on the student's level of engagement and understanding at various points in the course.
This meant that I did not have to wait for Student Feedback at the end of the semester and these insights increased my level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence to gauge levels of burnout and stress in students, which usually occurred around the mid-semester mark (week 6) when course assessments compounded in other courses.
See some snapshots of my "Temperature Checks" in various courses I have lectured.
