The covid-19 era has supported increased use of online, remote and blended teaching applications. Thus, technology tools for education have become integral aspects of my teaching philosophy for student-centred learning. Using the reflective model by Rolfe et al. (2001), I have assessed What? So What? Now What? related to my course instructional design for Introduction to Probability and Statistics over the past semester.
"I have been pleasantly surprised by some of the beneficial developments in my use of technology for teaching and learning. I have incorporated a variety of tools in my course design other than the typical PowerPoint presentation format. "
One such lecture on Sampling Distributions has shown some considerable growth in my ability to incorporate other Web 2.0 tools in an hour-long lecture.
The use of the Mentimeter.com Word Cloud as a pre-assessment tool to brainstorm key concepts proved successful. Students’ reactions appeared enthusiastic as they viewed their responses which were shown live. This component increased student engagement from the start. In addition, student collaboration was greatly enhanced and supported using a YouTube video on the topic instead of the traditional lecture slides. The critique and group presentation which followed on Sampling Distributions: What? Why? How? allowed students to use technology to summarise their understanding of the material.
Strengths and weaknesses in my online teaching and course development practices are seen in the assessment and participatory activities.
"While the group collaboration allowed students to engage harmoniously to improve their learning, there was little time for students to complete their post assessment activity example. In this case, in future iterations I will consider a quick quiz or poll to assess the topic. "
However, I am grateful that online learning provides students with access to the recording to review the example. Overall, I believe the lecture was enhanced using technological tools such as Mentimeter, Youtube and Google Slides. Future course design will incorporate more tools aligned with specific learning outcomes.
ASSURE Model
Overall, CUTL 5106 – Advanced Teaching with Technology has enhanced my ability to incorporate Web 2.0 tools for greater student engagement.
"Appropriate media selection for instructional design using the ASSURE Model has increased my confidence as an educator. "
Other types of tools such as Game-based learning (e.g. Online Jeopardy), Social networking (e.g. Padlet) and Mobile applications (e.g. Khan Academy) are at the helm of my future course designs. These will improve instructional activities to support greater student engagement.
