Evidence of Teaching Activities, Mentoring, and Professional Development
As a tertiary-level educator at The University of the West Indies (UWI), my commitment to teaching excellence and professional development is multifaceted and deeply ingrained in my practice. Here are some key aspects of my activities that align with the criteria for the UWI/Guardian Life Premium Teaching Award.
Mentoring and Training Activities:
Training Teaching Assistants and Mentoring Junior Colleagues: I have consistently mentored teaching assistants and junior colleagues, sharing best practices and offering guidance to enhance their teaching skills. As the Mathematics Help Centre Coordinator, I managed daily activities, coordinated tutors, and provided consultations to students across various faculties. This role allowed me to mentor tutors, improving their ability to support students effectively. See 3b. Overview of Teaching Roles and Responsibilities.
Peer Observation Framework: I participated in university-supported peer observation frameworks, where my teaching practices were reviewed by colleagues. This process provided valuable feedback, which I used to refine my instructional methods and enhance the learning experience for my students. See Peer Observation and Feedback.
Committee Involvement and Workshop Participation:
Committee Participation: I have actively participated in regional and national committee meetings focused on university teaching. These include the Cross-Campus Advisory Meetings and the Programme Proposal Committees, where I contributed to the development and review of curriculum and academic programs. See my Curriculum Vitae.
Workshops on Teaching: I have attended and conducted numerous workshops on teaching, including those on quantitative research methods and statistical software training. These workshops aimed to build capacity in statistics education and address students' statistics anxiety through practical, hands-on sessions and reflective practice. See Selected Teaching Footage.
Impact on Student Learning and Departmental Climate:
Range and Depth of Activities: My activities span a broad range of teaching, mentoring, and professional development efforts. These include leading research projects, developing Open Educational Resources (OER), and organizing workshops and seminars that enhance both student and educator competencies in data science and statistics. See Building Statistics Education Capacity
Improving Student Learning: My teaching methods, such as the use of flipped classrooms, multimedia resources, and project-based learning, have significantly improved student engagement and understanding. The high pass rates and positive student feedback in courses like Advanced Statistics and Research Methods in Psychology (PSYC 6013) and Introduction to Probability and Statistics (DISC 1011) attest to the effectiveness of these methods. See 5. Effective Teaching
Enhancing Departmental Teaching Quality: Through my leadership roles, including the organization of the Faculty Cafe and the development of the OER, I have contributed to a more collaborative and supportive teaching environment. These initiatives have fostered a community of practice among educators, encouraging the sharing of best practices and continuous professional growth. See Building Statistics Education Capacity .
Professional Development and Grants:
Grants for Improving Teaching and Learning: I have successfully secured grants for projects and I also involved in research aimed at enhancing teaching and learning. Notable among these is the grant for the "Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve coastal resilience in data-sparse locations: Caribbean region case study (AI4COASTS)," which underscores my commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into the curriculum. See 4. Innovative Research.
Professional Development: I continually seek professional development opportunities, such as completing the Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) program and participating in the Course Hero AI Academy. These experiences have enriched my teaching practice and equipped me with innovative strategies to address diverse learner needs. See Professional Development and Training.
Reflective Practice and Continuous Improvement:
Reflective Practice: Reflection is a core component of my teaching philosophy. I regularly incorporate feedback from students and colleagues to refine my teaching methods. This reflective practice ensures that my instructional strategies remain relevant and effective, ultimately leading to improved student learning outcomes.
In summary, my diverse range of activities, from mentoring and committee participation to securing grants and engaging in continuous professional development, underscores my commitment to teaching excellence. These efforts have not only enhanced student learning in my classes but also positively impacted the teaching climate within the department and the broader academic community at UWI.
