#01 - A Nostalgic Journey Begins

The day is Saturday, September 16th, 2023. Day 1 of being stranded on this foreign island. I don't remember how I got here, nor do I know how to get back to civilization... I guess I need to try to make the best of this place.

Foreword

A nostalgic adventure in the realms of ancient Minecraft versions begins today! I really felt like doing this because I got back into Minecraft survival and started a new world in Alpha 1.1.2, which I have been periodically upgrading to a “newer” version the further along I go. And with this little project, I’m planning to do the same, the only difference being, of course, a different map, and the fact I’m taking all of you on this ride with me. Everything else you need to know is explained in the video, but then again it’s mostly just useless talking to fill the first few minutes.

Starting with Difficulties

After a whole 200 seconds of blah blah talk, we are finally ready to head into our freshly selected World 4 - but just mere seconds after we spawn, the screen turns black… we’ve encountered our first Minecraft crash! What a lovely start. Let’s hope this doesn’t keep happening in future episodes.

After a restart of the game and the recording, World 4 finally does load - and we see very bright green grass and leaves, as well as a beach that we have landed on. While we think about what to build as a shelter for our first night in these foreign lands, we explore the area that will soon be our home and find mountains behind the woods, amazing landscapes on the other side of the lake and even a cactus (!) that we’ll keep there for now so it can keep growing.

Our shelter for the night will be the beginning of our first house, and for that we need wood. So, off to the woods we go and chop down our first trees. Did I say chop down? Of course I meant punching them down with saplings like real men! And also, we enable mobs by turning on Easy mode - which means nights and cave expeditions might get much more exciting.

Welcome to My Humble Abode

Having collected a few wooden logs and a few saplings off the ground to plant some new trees in the future, we start building our first little home by the lake, with a great view of the other shore that we definitely have to explore at some point in the future. After ever so slightly expanding the beach, we create a 4x4 square of wooden planks - but due to me wanting a single door, it’s asymmetrical - time to make it 5x4. Without an axe. That’s okay, we got more than enough time anyway.

Alright, the wall has been moved, so to continue let’s make a crafting table - easier said than done though, as I, without further ado, decide to place a wooden plank in the corner. Looks almost like a crafting table, sometimes I get things mixed up, it happens.

Now we finally have a crafting table placed, and on it we make our first sticks and wooden pickaxes - with which we venture out into the lands to search for coal, so that it doesn’t get too dark for the first night. At first we only find a gravel beach and a cave in the distance, which might not be a cave after all. But shortly thereafter, we see our first coal ores up on a mountain - which we ignore for now, because exploration is still important as well, and if we don’t find any more, we will just get it on the way back.
