Outcome Requirements:
Use appropriate communication based assessment establishing rapport
Understand importance of colloboration with other heath care team members
Throughout the semester, I believe I have progressed in my ability on combining cultural and personal beliefs into my care. I was able to gain an indepth understanding of patient's priorities by analyzing their medical histories. When I talked with my patient about his spiritual life, our conversation became an opportunity for connection, trust-building, and rapport. I discovered that accepting a patient’s views can enahnce the relationship between care giver and paitent therefore improving their overall emotional well-being.
This experience made me understand the need of personalizing communication and care to each patient’s background. I also became more aware of how cultural sensitivity and developmental awareness influence patient safety and comfort.
I will continued to achieve this goal of a paitent centerdness by engaging in active listening, demonstrating respect for personal values, and taking in develpomental stages into account.
This assignment shows how that providing care that is culturally appropriate needs respect, sensitivity, and curiosity. I intend to keep learning about and respecting the cultural and developmental identities of each patient going forward.

What safe and effective, developmentally and culturally appropriate behaviors were used to provide appropriate care to the client?
Some safe and effective, developmentally and culturally appropriate behaviors that were used included being mindful of the patient's spiritual background. When taking care of my patient, I was able to review his chart beforehand. Because of this, I was able to see that he was a former minister for a church and able to effectively communicate with him about his spiritual faith thus learning more about them.

Were you an advocate for your client?
I was an advocate for my client by asking about his wishes. For example, when taking him to breakfast, he was supposed to be in the assisted dining portion. My patient had no idea of this and was questioning me when I started taking him to that location. I listened to my patient and asked about where we were supposed to be and why. Staff had a conversation with each other and decided to let him eat in the cafeteria with his friends and talk to them.

Did you use therapeutic communication skills when communicating with patients and families?
Yes, I used therapeutic communication skills when communicating with patients. I didn’t get to talk to any families today. When assessing my secondary patient, I was able to talk to her in a way that she didn’t feel threatened by me. I began by complicating her asking her basic questions, and from there I was able to talk to her a little bit. Given her LOC, I wasn’t able to gather much information from her, but I was able to gather some insights. I feel that by assessing the situation and planning how to talk to her, I was able to practice therapeutic communication.

Your areas for improvement and remedy to improve:
An area for improvement is building confidence in communicating with patients who have more severe cognitive issues. I find myself to be a little more hesitant and held back in the beginning. I will work on this by taking time to practice communicating in short, simpler phrases.
