Safety outcomes: Provide safe nursing care within the healthcare system
1.) Adhere to safety standards when providing nursing care
2.) Explain the role of the nurse in supporting patient safety
Safety is extremely important in nursing. In every environment, nurses are required to meet the nursing safety standards according to their facility. This semester I showed safety by locking beds before and after interventions, making sure patients had their call light in all scenarios before and after intervention, checking for allergies, checking wristbands for correct identification along, making sure beds were at the appropriate height for appropriate situations and reviewing and understanding orders prior to continuing with the intervention.
One of the ways I demonstrated safety that adheres to the program's outcomes was through my NG skill video. In the video, I check the wrist band for confirmation, ask for allergies the patient might have, specifically to latex or adhesive of the correct patient, understanding the order before intervention, and placing the NG correctly and safely by checking gastric pH and signaling for an X-ray to confirm placement.
Throughout my clinical experience, I was able to use safety in all element of patient care. Under the guidance of my teacher or a registered nurse, I regularly adhered to safety procedures, learned how to utilize immobility and transfer devices correctly, and performed safe drug delivery. In addition I learned the importance of taking your time, double-checking, and knowing when to seek assistance in order to provide safe care to patients, these experiences helped me develop a more trustworthy sense of clinical judgment.
I chose my evidence-based practice paper as my artifact for this outcome. In this project, I investigated the ways in which organized handoff technologies like ISHAPED, leadership, communication, and teamwork all help to lower avoidable mistakes.
Overall, by increasing awareness, self-assurance, and dedication to upholding a safe environment for each patient, the clinical experiences and the research assignment assisted me in starting to reach the safety outcome.
