"labbie" - affectionate label for folks who identify as affiliates of the Louisiana Contextual Science Research Group
Dr. Emily K. Sandoz (she/they) is the Director of the Louisiana Contextual Science Research Group, which supports collaborative contributions from students and professionals from all over the world. They have co-authored three books on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for struggles with eating and body image, along with chapters and journal articles on contextual behavioral science, social justice, clinical behavioral processes, and psychological flexibility. Emily has led more than 100 training workshops for professionals around the world, and serves as a peer-reviewed ACT trainer. They also practice as a Clinical Psychologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, focusing on clinical behavior analysis.
"Kate [Kellum] and I developed Fran, initially, as a logo for our friendship. We realize how odd it is to develop a logo to represent your friendship - and yet, here we are! More importantly, Fran was, for us, a symbol of the standards by which we evaluate our field of Contextual Behavioral Science and our positions in it.
So, you might have noticed that Fran is a rat. They are also a Contextual Behavioral Scientist (...don't ask). Fran is no stranger to basic principles that describe different aspects of the complex and dynamic functional relations between context and behavior. Fran remains grounded in these foundational, philosophical, and theorectical principles.
But Fran is also at work in the world... With the world as their operandum - their lever - Fran's behavior as a scientist is guided by the products and processes of their actions that interact with the communities that they touch. And there are particular products and processes that nuture Fran's growth. Fran's actions as a Contextual Behavioral Scientist are shaped by their impact on equity, their impact on justice, their impact on compassion and community, on joy and empowerment.
In short, Fran acts in ways that bring more love to the world. Fran is empowered. Despite their humble beginnings as a lever-pressing rat, Fran's participation in a loving context has nurtured their repertoire and expanded their freedom. And Fran uses that freedom, uses that power, to change the world in ways that empowers others.
And finally, Fran is really, really into breaking stuff. Rats using the world as a lever to create more love in the world is defintiely against the rules, right? Yet, here they [Fran] are. So is questioning institutional power, so is ignoring capitalist contingencies, so is transparency, so is lifting up the voices of folks who are disempowered, so is seeing where we have participated in harm and created the context for repair. So is active, feirce, and persistent love."
