The Louisiana Contextual Science Research Group (LCSRG; "the lab") meets virtually via Zoom on Fridays from 1:30PM-4:00PM (CST/UTC-6) during the spring & fall semesters. The lab has adopted a sort of "open-door" policy to provide flexibility around lab meeting attendance for all labbies. Here's an idea of what that looks like:
As a lab, we encourage each and every human (including and expecially labbies!) to check-in with themselves to see if they have the bandwidth to attend lab. If not, go take that nap that you've been thinking about, or get that thing done that you've been putting off, or go spend time with someone you care about, or go on that trip, or go to that doctor's appointment, or make some coffee and curl up with a good book. Take care of yourself. No one is keeping a tally of how many lab meetings you make it to. That being said, I personally feel that the lab meetings contain a lot of the "good stuff" of lab, such as inside jokes and hilarious conversation, lab culture in practice, advocacy and networking, personal disclosure and interest-sharing, and tons of "nerding out"!
Being on Zoom makes that really convenient. You can keep your camera on, or off, or switch back and forth. While everyone is certainly invited to share something at some point in the meeting, you can choose to speak through your mic, respond in the chat, or you can choose to not share at all. Essentially, you can choose how much you want to be involved in the meeting. For some folks, this is the reason they're able to attend lab meetings. For example, we've had labbies who attend lab while at a coffee shop or working at a job and choose to keep their camera and mic off during the entire meeting but will send a message in the chat when they find something interesting or have something to say.
Each lab meeting is broken up into 3-4ish chunks: Labbie Check-In, Project Check-In, FlexPrax, and Applied/Clinical chat and/or Conceptual chat. (You can find more info, resources, and relevant links to each of these chunks below!). Some folks can't hop on the Zoom meeting until an hour after it's started, others don't find the FlexPrax helpful, and others will choose to exit the meeting before the lab dives into the Applied/Clinical or Conceptual chat topic of the day (e.g., maybe a certain topic is particularly hard for them, or maybe it doesn't interest or apply to them). Labbies are welcome to hop on and off the meeting as much as they'd like!
One of the central parts of our lab meetings is labbie check-in, which typically happens at the beginning of each lab meeting. Labbies are invited to "check-in" with some semi-structured prompts. This is the part of lab where folks share their highs, lows, appreciations, needs, resources, and opportunities - and coincidentally where folks can "catch up" on each others' lives and get involved in various lab tasks and needs! Check out the Labbie Check-In page to learn more about the check-in categories.
During lab meetings, project check-in typically happens directly after labbie check-in. Labbies are invited to provide the lab with some updates on their project(s) as they "check-in" with some semi-structured prompts. This is the part of lab where folks can "catch up" on each others' progress and get involved in various projects in the lab! Check out the Project Check-In & Project Management page to learn more about the check-in categories and how to get involved!
While both labbie check-in and project check-in are happening, labbies are encouraged to evaluate their needs, resources, and opportunities that they might want to share with the lab. As labbies check-in, they are prompted to add those needs, resources, and opportunities to the Working Lab Tasks document (aka the "task list"). Check out The "Task List" page to get a better understanding of what qualifies as a need, a resource, and an opportunity and to view the lab's live task list.
Whether it's a thesis meeting, a data meeting, a conceptual meeting, a consultation meeting, or something else entirely, Emily's Teams Calendar offers the dates and times that Em is available to meet one-on-one. Labbies should be mindful of dates, time zone differences, and any other variables that may impact scheduling a meeting. Check out the Emily's Office Hours page to book some time with Em!
After labbie check-in and project check-in, the lab meeting transitions to either a break or a FlexPrax. Following that, the lab lead(s) will guide the rest of the labbies through the last chunk of the meeting. This last chunk is typically a labbie-led conversation, or as we call it, a "chat." These chats are of two types: applied/clincial and conceptual. It's entirely possible that a topic can fit in both categories. This is the part of the meeting where the lab lead brings a topic of interest or the lab to chat about from a contextual behavioral lense. Check out the FlexPrax, Applied, and Conceptual Chats page to learn more about these unique parts of lab meetings and to sign up to be a lab lead!
