How Successful People Deal with Tough Times
We've been hit with one disaster after another since the start of this year. It seems like a dream. Just four months ago that the whole world is enjoying employment, record-setting stock market highs and everything looked wonderful. In a mind-numbing and unrelenting series of shocking events, we’ve been hit with the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to an economic crash followed by a job-loss crisis. Businesses were shut down, people ordered to stay home, schools were closed and 40 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits since mid-March... we can keep going on and on about these depressing situations. But enough of the bad news, instead, let's focus on what we have control over, shall we?

"We must always find the hidden opportunities that are within each one of us. Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about learning how to dance in the rain!"
- Jeffrey Mayer, CEO
1."That isn't my job" isn't in their vocabulary - Conscientiousness is a trait that can only be tested in a working environment, making it difficult to vet for – so if we find it, we try not to let it go.
2. They don't automatically find a clique. - Those who are happy to be seen as a little different may be the hidden gems. For example, someone who is viewed as quirky has the benefit of bringing a different perspective to the team; a valuable asset if you’re trying to make large, long-term decisions.
3. They don't encourage friction - There’s being ‘quirky’, and then there’s being disruptive. A truly exceptional employee will be able to provide a fresh perspective and move against the grain, but still knows how to work seamlessly with a team. They usually likes to observe, doesn’t try to take control, and offers advice. If you know what you’re doing, your team mates will know who is the plus one without them having to shout about it.
4. They're good at sniffing out other exceptional employees - Someone who’s good at their job knows good work when they see it, and isn’t afraid to let other people know. They will acknowledge work that is great and naturally gravitate towards other employees who have a similar agenda to them – these employees will help them faster on their way to achieving their shared work goals. This promotes positivity in the workspace (a money-can’t-buy attribute) which in turn promotes productivity.
5. They're in competition with themselves - The stand-out, gold star employee is self-motivating. They want to prove to others they can do a good job, but above all else, they want to prove to themselves they can do a new job.
Is asking for all these criteria a lot? Yes. But it’s not asking for too much, and being aware of these characteristics will help each one of us develop a keen sense of the kind of person we should be cultivating and striving to become. Having one exceptional employee is truly a gem, but having an all star, exceptional team is every organization's dream!
