Creation Station Video Series That Teaches Science Concepts Through Crafts

Black History Month STEAM Project

As part of our Black History Month celebration, the Creation Station is giving out kits to our patrons to make a model cardboard elevator, and we're holding an Invention Contest to see what you can invent to make this elevator better!

Invention Contest Rules:

* Pick up a Model Elevator Project kit from the Creation Station and assemble as shown in the video

* Improve your elevator. You can build onto the actual model, or draw a design and explain how it would work

* Send photos of your improved model elevator or design to the Creation Station email, or through Facebook

* The winner or winners will be chosen at the end of the month, and announced on March 3rd and will receive a voucher for a free 3D Print

Episode #1 - The Lungs: This month we focus on the anatomy and function of the human lungs. Makers will learn how the respiratory systems works and then build a simple craft at home to demonstrate lung mechanics while we breathe.

Please call or email the Creation Station to request a STEAM craft kit. There are a limited number of kits available.

Materials needed for project:

(1) Clear Water Bottle, Cut in half (included in kit)

(1) Red Balloon (included in kit)

(1) Clear Balloon (included in kit)

Scissors (not included, parental supervision needed)

Exacto Knife (not included, parental supervision needed)

[Technician uses masking tape in video to add additional support to the water bottle. Cheaper bottles are typically flimsy to work with, also use Scotch tape to keep clear balloon in place]

Episode #2 - DC Motor: In this episode we will answer the question, "What is a DC motor?" This topic will discuss properties of electricity, circuits and more while being geared towards 8th Grade NGSS Physical Science.

The Creation Station will also be putting together STEAM craft kits which will include supplies needed to build a BristleBot creature using the head of a toothbrush, a small button battery and a tiny DC motor.

Episode #3 - Newton's Laws of Motion: In this episode we will answer the question, "What are Newton's Laws of Motion?" This topic will shed a little history on Sir Isaac Newton, talk a little on the concepts of of Newton's Laws of Motion and a step-by-step how-to on building a Newton's Cradle. This episode is geared towards 8th Grade NGSS Physical Science.
