International Day of the Midwife 2023

Happy International Midwives Day 2023

On May 5th every year, midwives in the world organize activities in celebration of International Day of the Midwife. On behalf of the Lao Midwife Association, I'd like to congratulate all the midwives in the country for providing maternal and child health services, especially during the Covid-19 infection which our midwives contributed greatly to the  prevention and.

Midwives are important people for taking care of maternal and child health, families and communities help to reduce the mortality rate of maternal and child. In the past, the maternal mortality rate in our country was still high. The main cause of mortality is bleeding after childbirth, convulsions, infections after childbirth and miscarriage. In order to reduce the above problems, we request all midwives to increase their attention in reproductive health care, focus on checking and screening the maternal and child health. If there is a good screening, it will reduce or prevent complications of the maternal and child health.

It is evident that midwives who have been properly and comprehensively trained can provide information and necessary quality services, especially women before pregnancy care, pregnancy, before childbirth and delivery periods, including family planning, emergency childbirth assistance (BeMOC). In addition, it can help patients in case of disease outbreaks, disasters and humanitarian crises.

The outstanding achievement in recent times is the University of Health Sciences in Champasak, Luangprabang and Xiengkuang which is a model university in teaching and learning. The midwifery course was undertaken according to the standards of the International Federation of Midwives (ICM Accreditation). This success has confirmed that midwifery has progressed and strengthened to another level.

As a president of the association, we will continue to collaborate with health education facilities and health service facilities, associations involve the ministry and related sectors to improve the quality of education and midwifery services to better than before. Also request all sectors to cooperate, support and invest in this work to raise the enthusiasm and dignity of the midwifery profession to be accepted by the society and simultaneously develop the midwifery education quality and services to be comparable with an international level.

On this glorious occasion, I would like to wish Lao midwives in Laos and globally to have good health, contribute to protect and save maternal and newborns life and work side by side with other professions to raise the quality of public health services gradually.
