Thermoplastic Composites

Sao Paulo Initiative on Research and Innovation in Thermoplastic Composites

I) What is SPIRIT?

  • SPIRIT is an initiative proposed with the objective of establishing a local network for collaborative research on thermoplastics composites materials.

II) What are the main goals?

Create a Brazilian Thermoplastic Composites ecosystem: Embraer, Alltec, ITA, UNESP, LEL-IPT, IAE and TenCate collaboration to stimulate and accelerate thermoplastic composites innovation on Embraer fleet.

  • To prepare for future adaptation and application of thermoplastic composites on a larger scale on Embraer platforms (structures and interiors);
  • To build a BRAZ local resource pool with in-depth knowledge and experience in thermoplastic composite materials, processes and design;
  • To connect this strong BRAZ TPC ecosystem to established thermoplastic composites networks (e.g. TPRC).

III) Who are the SPIRIT Partners?

IV) SPIRIT Activities:

  • Create a material database for TORAY TC1225 5HS T300J low-melt PAEK:

TC1225 is an engineered thermoplastic composite material, utilizing a semi-crystalline engineered polyarlyetherketone (PAEK) resin for excellent mechanical performance and lower processing temperatures (by 50 - 75°C).

Performed tests:

Stiffness, Strength and Toughness: Tensile, Compression, In-Plane Shear, CAI, OHC, ILSS, GIC;

Thermal Analysis: TMA, DMA, DSC, TGA;

Morphological Characterization: Volume Fraction;

Dynamic Material Properties Characterization: Impulse Excitation of Vibration;

  • Create a stiffened panel demonstrator:

Apply the acquired knowledge on a small-scale demonstrator for proof-of-concept.
