Editorial board

The editorial board meets weekly and members of the board are required to attend unless excused by the editor-in-chief. Members with three ore more unexcused absences may lose their editorship.

Change of policy or procedures

The editorial board must approve changes of La Voz policy or procedures. All members of the editorial board must be given the opportunity to express an opinion on the proposal. A favorable vote by a two-thirds quorum of the editorial board is required and proxies may not be used. Staff members and editors are encouraged to make recommendations and may propose changes to the editorial board.

Confidentiality

All proceedings of the editorial board and the La Voz staff are confidential and may not be discussed with individuals who are not staff members. Disagreements among editorial board members or La Voz staff will be kept to members of the staff.

Editorial board meetings

The editor-in-chief or managing editor chairs the meeting and is responsible for creating an agenda. The managing editor or their designee is responsible for taking notes. Topics covered during board meetings include an update by each section editor on the status of their page, a decision on which sections will be on which pages and the subjects of editorials. During board meetings, any single topic of discussion, editorial or outside speaker is limited to 10 minutes. The editorial board approves cartoons and any material (editorial or advertising) that may be considered controversial, and once approved they may not be altered in any substantial way.

Any non-staff individuals who express dissatisfaction with an editorial or news treatment should be referred to the editor-in-chief and advised to write a letter to the editor.

Removal of editors

When at least three members of the editorial board are concerned about the abilities of the editor-in-chief, they should notify the faculty adviser to request a hearing. The adviser will contact the members of the original interview committee to conduct a hearing, during which any staff member may provide relevant comments to the committee. The interview committee members will make a final determination. If any member of the original committee is not available, replacement members of the hearing board will be selected by the remaining members of the original committee. Other editors may be removed by the editor-in-chief in consultation with the adviser. Grounds for dismissal include, but are not limited to, contempt or non-support of the editor-in-chief, inability to meet the responsibilities of the position and absences.

Voting

Editorial board decisions require a majority vote, unless otherwise specified. Each member of the editorial board has one vote, except the faculty adviser who has no vote. A voting quorum is two-thirds of the membership. The editor-in-chief can override any vote and all decisions.

Voting proxies are permitted but require a written explanation, including the names of the editor and approved proxy, the date and instructions to vote in a particular way on an issue. The approved proxy must attend the designated meeting.

Editorial opinion policy

Editorials are the unsigned opinion of the editorial board and may be written by any member of the editorial board. They are discussed and voted upon during editorial board meetings and need two-thirds approval of the editorial board. If the editorial hasn’t been written by the deadline of the editorial board meeting, the editorial may be circulated among editors for a signature of approval, although this should only be done in emergencies.
