Glory of the Alfar
Glory of the Alfar
Alfar are a race of humanoids very similar to regular humans in appearance outside of their pointed ears. They were once the dominant species in Zutara before the seraphim descended onto the world, but quickly made peace with the seraphim and the dragons and formed a truce with them. Their capital was destroyed along with the majority of their race when the Crimson Meteor fell, but over time they were able to rebuild and repopulate the planet. Alfar are divided into multiple different tribes, each specializing in a different type of magick, which they worshiped in ancient times before the worship of the seraphim became the dominant religion.
First is the Fire Tribe, or Salamanders. These alfar can control and create fire and are excellent cooks. They also had a very close relationship with the dragon tribes before the fall of the crimson meteor. Next is the earth tribe, or Gnomes. These alfar live side by side with nature, building their villages solely out of natural resources. They are excellent hunters and can create and control rocks, the ground, and plant-life. After that is the water tribe, or Undines. These alfar usually live by the sea and are excellent sailors and fishermen. They also have a very close relationship with the merfolk and often trade with them. They can create, control, and manipulate water in all its forms and also tend to specialize in healing magick.
Then there is the wind tribe, or Sylphs. They can control the wind and are excellent mechanics, and were actually the ones who invented magitek in the first place, a technology that combines magick with engineering to create powerful automated machines. Second to last is the light tribe, or pixies, the rarest type of Alfar. These Alfar specialize in holy magick and can enter people's dreams. They are also winged in both the standard and faerie form, but more on that later. Finally, there is the Cait Tribe or Cait Sith, alfar that resemble cat-like people. They are neutral in all elements and sometimes possess cat-like mannerisms, making them seem a bit odd to others. If they specialize in any type of magick, it's usually transformation magick. Not to be confused with the nekomimi, who are an entirely different race.
But then there is the Dark Alfar. They used to live on the dark continent, a horrific land full of darkness and evil, though they later left that place to integrate with regular society. There are two types of Alfar, the Drow and the Spriggan. Drow are the most common type of dark alfar and have much darker skin than the other alfar, usually of a dark brown or gray color, and always have white hair with maybe a hint of red or black mixed in. About 75% of their race is female, and no one knows why. Due to this they often used to kidnap men and use them to create spawn, but no longer participate in that practice since their integration into normal society. They also used to worship the elder demon Skoloth the Spider Queen, but luckily they no longer do so. The only other types of dark alfar are the Spriggan. These alfar inhabit dreams and are bringers of nightmares, and despite their evil specialty they created the dreaded nightmare hour solely for benevolent reasons: to prevent humanity’s unconsciousness from drifting into the farplane, causing their souls to become consumed by Elzakalas.
Alfar all possess extremely strong magickal might, and can even cast specific spells without animus. After the alfar race’s near-destruction in 1999 AF, alfar blood became common in most noble bloodlines, making about 25% of the population part alfar. This allowed 1 in every 4 people to be able to cast basic spells without any trouble or additional things, making the use of magick much more mainstream. Alfar also have a very special unique ability. They can transform into their “fairy form", which makes them only 2 inches tall, gives them large butterfly/insect wings and antennae, and heavily improves their magickal might. Since all alfar in fairy form are automatically female, obviously this ability isn’t too popular with the men.
The Aflar were almost entirely wiped out on the Day of Calamity on Late Winter 28th, 1999 AF. During that day, a massive meteor containing a horde of monsters crashed into the world, destroying the ancient kingdom of Magia Zophia and wiping out 95% of all life, including almost all the alfar. Only about 50 years after the day of calamity, the aging Saint Helena was asked to plant a forest and reform the alfar race by the spirit of the earth. In exchange, she would obtain a younger alfar body that possessed eternal youth as long as she stayed a virgin. Saint Helena faked her own death and then worked to plant the forest which became the Banna/Nostra Woods many years later. After the forest was made, she placed an enchantment on the forest that would turn anyone who entered her village into an alfar. She did this to start re-forming alfar society and demanded that the alfar would never leave the forest by the order of the spirit of the earth herself. However, many alfar survived the calamity, more alfar than humans in fact, and were able to repopulate without Helena’s involvement. And thus, the legacy of the alfar, and their glory, continued onwards for generations.
