Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental health is an important topic many do not talk about. Whether it be anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc, mental health is still and important topic and should be discussed. May is the month to come together and show our support to the mental health community.
Mental Health Awareness Month was first established in 1949 by the Mental Health America Organization (MHAO). Back in the old days, it was known as "Mental Health Week." Over the years, the week has evolved into an entire month dedicated to support and raise awareness to those who have mental health issues and the impact they have on their families.
The primary purpose of MHAM(Mental Health Awareness Month) is to remove shame of mental health problems and encourage people to seek help without fear of judgement. Many people suffer in silence due to the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. By raising awareness and foster understanding we lower the social stigma and create a comfortable environment to those who have mental illnesses. We can join educational workshops, seminars, and public talks that are organized to educate the public about many different types of mental health conditions.
Mental Health Awareness Month is not only just for those with mental health conditions, it is also for everyone. Doing activities that promote stress reduction and mindfulness is important to everyone as it helps prevent the development of severe mental health issues.
