Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological disorder that is unfortunately common among millions of people. March is the month dedicated to spread awareness, learn more, and support people with Multiple Sclerosis.

MS is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body's immune system to mistakenly attack the protective covering of nerve fibers, also known as myelin, in the central nervous system. This disrupts the communication between the brain and the rest of the body. This leads to a wide range of symptoms that can vary in different people.

This disease normally affects young adults between the ages of 20 to 50. Currently the cause of MS is unknown, however, it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Living with MS creates multiple challenges like fatigue, muscle weakness, coordination difficulties, etc. The unknown knowledge of MS makes it complicated as symptoms can arise at any given time.

Not only does MS impact the individual diagnosed, it also impacts the caregivers and families. The support caregivers and families give are crucial to acknowledge. They are the true heroes without capes as they selflessly offer their time and energy to those diagnosed.

Another important part of MS Awareness Month is the promotion of research and advocacy. The advances in medical research have led to a better understanding of MS, however, there is a lot of work to be done. We can support the research being done by advocating for increased funding and support for MS research.

Furthermore, fighting for policies that protect the rights of people with disabilities and ensure accessibility to essential services is an integral part of the advocacy efforts during this month.
