The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Description: I was able to assess a student during my time in a fourth grade literacy class.
Connection: This artifact aligns with the knowlede indicator 6A, "understands appropriate and varied instructional approaches used before, during, and after reading, including those that develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas." Assessing students in literacy is highly pertinant to all school acadamia. If you can read and understand contexts you are better off in other contexts and settings.
Importance: Students need to be literate in order to continue to grow and further develop their understanding of the world at large and the world around them. Students need to continue to work on their vocabulary and develop literacy interests. the more vocabulary you have the better able to communicate feelings, thoughts, and interests.
Description: ACC device or "Talker" for students who are non verbal.
Connection:This artifact aligns with the performance indicator 6J "selects, modifies, and uses a wide range of printed, visual, or auditory materials, and online resources appropriate to the content areas and the reading needs and levels of each student (including ELLs, and struggling and advanced readers." Talkers open a world of communication for students who are non-verbal. Students who do not communicate verbally can comprehend and understand others. Utilizing a talker, and pictures of the primary people and places within the school environemnt, provides a gateway for communication and ability to demonstrate knowedge and connecting to others in all areas of their education.
Importance: Being able to communicate with others, whether through words, pictures or other means is important for all students. Utilizing an ACC device assist students in asking questions to gain further knowledge about various content areas.
