Before joining Texas A&M, I was a YouTuber! I planned, filmed, edited, and published educational videos about A-Level and O-Level exams to help my juniors with their exam revision.
I spent hours filtering through example questions, planning out scripts, and filming every video. The entire process began with a structured thinking approach, starting with writing out my thoughts on the whiteboard in an organized manner, to making the edits entertaining and light for viewers. Despite being years, I continue to receive positive comments and views from students all around the world. The entire experience strengthened my mentorship and speaking skills.
Often, I did many retakes of my videos until I got the 'perfect' video. Handling judgment and others' opinions were big fears to conquer. That led to unnecessary frustration and contemplation. Through the experience, I learned to present myself with energy and passion, in the most natural state. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone and being comfortable helped me develop self-confidence and public-speaking skills.
With COVID-19, many of my juniors struggled with revising for exams. The wave of online classes, and the discomfort of wearing masks, can really harm the learning experience. I was grateful to have in-person classes in high school, and out of gratitude and compassion, this channel was a platform to give my juniors more confidence in themselves. A guiding light through these challenging times.
Editing the videos took at least two hours for each one. Trimming out parts where I made mistakes, I made videos as short and concise as possible to save my juniors' time. I always inserted funny memes, bloopers, and cool animations to increase engagement and lighten the technicality of the videos.
Editing thumbnails for the videos was challenging. Choosing the font qualities (color, size, position) and photo qualities (brightness, saturation) pushed my imagination and creativity. Often, I juggled keeping the thumbnails natural and attention-grabbing. The delicate balance took time to manifest.
As a Sophomore Advisor for the Honors Housing Community, I also strive to promote academic excellence among mentees by sharing study tips for different courses. I plan to use the technical editing skills I learnt to design flyers for Howdy Week events.
With better audience awareness and public speaking skills, I want to step outside the classroom to the real world and document my life experiences at work, travel, and in daily life. I hope to showcase the joys and challenges that international students face in the United States and inspire them to discover their passion just like me.
