I learnt to play the keyboard piano at Cristofori Music School in Singapore. Learning about chords, reading musical sheets and playing songs, I developed my music theory and achieved a Distinction in the London College of Music (Grade 3) Examination.
With that, I began playing it as a hobby and created piano covers of English and Indian songs. One such is the cover of 'Senorita', which I published on my YouTube Channel.
From hearing a song, I would find out its major, the different chords in the song, and the notes to play. This developed my mind-body coordination and strengthened my ability to convert the theory knowledge I learnt into practice.
Oftentimes, I added my improvisations of song melodies when playing the piano. In the above video, I added 'trills' or 'mordents', which are fast-paced notes. Very minute but enhance the overall feeling of the song. To me, it reflected the tendency and feeling of my mind, and the freedom I give to my thoughts.
The initial stages of learning piano were frustrating, as would be any sport or activity. I had the 'perfectionist' mindset and often beat myself up for making small mistakes when making piano covers for YouTube. Over time, I understood that 'To err is human', and I began playing the piano more naturally and comfortably. I always loved myself and the progress I have made.
