My project description
From my perspective, I believe that this section of this ePortfolio explores how social media has the ability to influence my daily life and my activity across online platforms. This project also assisted me into acknowledging my own social media usage through the survey called “Am I Addicted to Social Media” which then helped me reflect of how its impact can affect society as a whole.
Social Media Addiction Survey Results:
After taking this assessment, my results conveyed that I have a moderate level of social media usage. How I interpret this final conclusion, was that I am not fully dependent on the works of social media, but I do acknowledge that I rely on it more than I led on before. So, I wasn’t completely surprised by the outcome, mainly because I do know that I have repeatedly checked my apps such as Instagram and Tik Tok throughout my day, but I did not realize how often I scroll without even thinking about it. Seeing those results made me reflect on how often and how much time I spend scrolling, hopefully I can create healthier boundaries for social media.
One interesting statistical fact that stood out the most to me was how 66% of adults between the ages 18-29 use YouTube more than any social media app but most importantly compared to TikTok with a 47%. My reason for bringing awareness about this interesting statistical fact, was to solely address how adults prefer to view digital content. This indicates that after many years of utilizing YouTube, YouTube in today’s society is a platform that is still being used by the younger generation. Which is crazy to me because TikTok is considered one of the most popular apps among all adults in my opinion. How this relates to me, is that granted I am a moderate social media user, but I tend to use TikTok more than YouTube. How I use TikTok is for learning, entertainment, and even school related content. So, this statistic made me truly realize that every user has a preference but overall YouTube continues to shape how the younger generation stays informed.
Social Media has become such a huge part of everyday life for society. That at times I forget that social media shapes how I choose to interact with the world. On one hand social media gives me instant access to information, connections, and entertainment that is outside of my norm. However, on the other hand I have noticed that social media has also become an easy influence towards my mood and my self-perception. Between these two combinations of bringing people together and spreading unrealistic expectations, social media as a whole is 50/50. Even though social media has its benefits, in my opinion, society is still learning how to properly use it. Now, once I truly sat back and began reflecting about the advantages and disadvantages of social media. I have come to the realization that social media is 50/50 and in order to become 100% learning key tools such as creating digital free zones, and/or using built-in limits can be very benefical.
After completing this assignment, I have learned the importance of my online activity and my digital footprint. I also learned that social media is 50/50 of advantages and disadvantages, which can be valuable in the terms of being informative but also a challenge for setting unrealistic expectations. This project has also highlighted the true value of setting boundaries and becoming more intentional with my online activity. But overall, this learning experience has enhanced my understanding of how I should approach social media with more awareness and accountability.
