Welcome to the University of King’s College Chapel, open to all students, of any faith or none.
We – Cohen Aiken, Hayden Raymond, and Harrison Burgess - are the Chapel Wardens. We are members of a student leadership team that works closely with the University Chaplain, Father Ranall Ingalls, and helps to foster and nurture connections across campus and the wider city. We are always happy to hear from you! So, if you’d like to get in touch, say hello, or hang out, you are always very welcome and free to do so!
Your University Chaplain is available to all students to encourage, advise, counsel, and offer support in your life here at King’s. The Chaplain’s office is on the main floor of the Arts and Administration Building. Stop by and meet Father Ingalls (and his corgi, Finnegan!) anytime.
Both the King’s Chapel Choir and the King’s Chorus make their home in the Chapel. With them, beautiful music is combined with historic liturgy, all in the spirit of the Foundation Year Program’s exploration of the roots of our modern world. The Chapel Choir sings at Evensong and Choral Eucharist, two beautiful services open to all that take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays respectively, both at 5:00 pm. You will also hear the Chapel Choir sing grace at Formal Meals. A smaller group of singers, meanwhile, sing at Compline – a late evening service held on Mondays at 9:30 pm. For more information on these services, see https://www.kingschapel.ca/about-worship . The King’s Chorus, open to both new and experienced singers, rehearses weekly and sings one concert each term. In all of these choral groups, new members are always welcome at any time. For more information on joining, see kingschapel.ca/music.
Hearing the Chapel Bells three times each day is part of the King’s experience. The bells, which usually ring out at 8:00 am, noon, and 5:00 pm, indicate that prayers are being offered in the Chapel.
Student-run services are held every day except Saturday at the chapel, and all are most welcome to attend or get involved! For full details of our schedule, check out the overview on the Chapel website: https://www.kingschapel.ca/service-times, or see the notice board outside the Chapel doors.
The Chapel is reserved as a quiet space for two hours each day (7:00 – 8:000 am and 10:00 – 11:00 pm), with the space available for meditation, solitude, and quiet reflection. Additionally, there are many other times throughout the day when the Chapel is empty, or almost so.
Apart from our regular weekly services, the Chapel organizes hikes, retreats, volunteer opportunities, and hosts open mikes, concerts, vigils, and lectures. Be sure to keep an eye out for posters and FYP announcements! The retreats are cherished opportunities for students to gather as a community outside of Kjipuktuk (Halifax) and experience the natural beauty of Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia). Chapel retreats are centered around shared meals, discussion, prayer, and addresses from a guest poet or scholar.
With that, we welcome you all to King’s and cannot wait to see you at the Chapel!
Here’s to a wonderful year ahead,
Cohen, Hayden, and Harrison.
