The Community of Inquiry is a constructive "theoretical framework" that describes how to create the most effective online educational environment. It shows a relationship between how teachers construct their course and facilitate it with their students, how students develop and construct new meaning and knowledge, and how both learner-learner interaction and learner-teacher interaction develops relationships that allow participants to see each other as "real people". These are known as teaching presence, cognitive presence, and social presence respectively. By these "presences" working together, students have a rich, thorough, and successful online experience.
