The human-centered engineering lab at the University of Illinois Chicago (uic.edu) invites applications for fully funded PhD student positions to facilitate human-technology partnerships at future workplaces through the convergence of extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
* Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, data science, information science, computer science, or a closely related field
- Strong programming skills (e.g., C++, C#, or Python)
- Enthusiasm for industrial applications of XR (virtual, augmented, and mixed reality) as well as human-centered computing and engineering

* Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in human-computer interaction or closely related fields described above
- Previous coursework or research experience in related areas: virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, game development, human factors engineering, and/or human-computer interaction
- Experience in XR development (e.g., Unity 3D, Unreal) with head-worn displays (e.g., MS HoloLens, HTC Vive, Meta Quest)
- Experience in human-subject experiments and publications

The Department of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in healthcare human factors. This post-doctoral opportunity will enable the fellow to carry out collaborative research on a systems-approach on the design and implementation of AI-based clinical decision support systems. The fellow will be mentored by Dr. Jackie Cha, with an interdisciplinary team at Clemson University with Dr. Shyam Ranganathan and Dr. Divya Srinivasan and clinicians at Prisma Health.
This full-time post-doctoral fellow will last 1-2 years depending on the start date and continued success of the fellow. The fellow will work with the research team to achieve the project goals and developed an independent research project. Fellows are required to participate in the dissemination of the research and will receive support for attendance at national research conferences to present research results. Fellows are expected/encouraged to:
• Lead the multidisciplinary team for project management, data collection, and analysis at Prisma Health regarding to develop, implement, and evaluate AI-based clinical support systems.
• Contribute significantly to proposal writing and the preparation of manuscripts for scientific journals and presentations at human factors and clinical conferences.
• Develop an independent research project suitable to use in establishing their own lab and lead grant submissions as PI.
• Mentor graduate, undergraduate, and medical students involved in the project.
Benefits
Fellows are eligible to participate in various educational and training activities at Clemson University and Prisma Health, including participating in a NIH Accelerator workshop. Salary is aligned with the NIH postdoctoral pay.
Eligible candidates will have a PhD in human factors (industrial engineering/ psychology/ behavioral science), health information technology, technology interaction design, or related research domain. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. A record of research accomplishments and publication of collaborative research in top academic journals is preferred. Experience in healthcare human factors research, including working with clinicians, clinical staff and patients, is preferred.

Do you enjoy developing video game engines (e.g., Unreal Engine) and working with immersive technologies such as VR, AR, and MR? Are you excited to conduct user studies and experiments with both physical and virtual robot technology that you develop and understand how people use it? Are you interested in developing and understanding the future of how robotics and AI technology will be applied alongside humans?
Fully funded postdoctoral positions and graduate positions (PhD students, Masters students) are available in the School of Engineering at Oakland University (Michigan, USA). Students will be co-advised across the departments of computer science, electrical & computer engineering, and industrial & systems engineering. Students will engage in the following general research areas: 1) immersive simulations (e.g., augmented/virtual/mixed reality), 2) autonomous robot/vehicle development, 3) human-robot interaction, 4) human-computer interaction, and 5) machine learning, artificial intelligence, and natural language processing.
The project in a nutshell:
We will be developing tools and approaches to conduct multi-user experiments in video gaming engines (i..e, virtual experimentation) to investigate human-robot interactions within heterogeneous teams with both manned/unmanned autonomous and teleoperated robots. We will also be exploring a combination of augmented, mixed, and virtual reality hardware to improve immersive experiences during virtual experimentation.

Close collaboration in a research team consisting of 5 faculty, 3 postdocs, 5 PhD students, and 2 Masters students
Cross-disciplinary project with computer science, electrical & computer engineering, and industrial & systems engineering, and mechanical engineering

Position responsibilities and expected skill set of applicants:
The postdoctoral researcher will design, implement, and evaluate an all-in-one virtual robot prototyping and experimentation platform using immersive gaming environments. We are looking for passionate individuals that are interested in understanding how humans and robots interact within a team environment using highly immersive video game technologies. Candidates should be passionate about working at the intersection between both virtual and physical autonomous robots and getting these technologies into the hands of people so they can be evaluated by real end-users. The candidate should also be excited to work in interdisciplinary research groups for advancing challenging research goals. Applicants must have a PhD in human-robot interaction, robotics, computer science, video game development, or equivalent fields. Applicants are expected to have the following traits:
Published excellent quality papers in one or more of: robotics, human-robot interaction, video game development, machine learning, VR/AR/XR, or related research topics
Substantial practical experience in a broad range of technical areas including one or more of: game development, VR/AR/XR, human-robot interaction, imitation learning/behavior cloning/learning from demonstration, autonomous mobile/aerial robots, and human-computer interaction
Advanced software engineering skills, including developing and maintaining complex software systems in C++/Python, ROS, and Unreal Engine or equivalent
Experience supervising graduate and undergraduate students in research projects.
Experience in applying for, and obtaining, ethics-board approvals for collecting data from user trials
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative both internally and with external project partners
Interested in being trained or participating in grant proposal writing
The PhD student will be responsible for developing a virtual platform or post-experiment interviewing of experiment subjects and visualization of experiment results. They will also conduct user studies in virtual and face-to-face modalities to produce generalizable knowledge about rapid prototyping of virtual simulations for experiments. The student is also expected to first-author peer-reviewed publications regarding their research. Applicants should have at minimum a Masters degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or equivalent fields. Applicants are expected to have the following traits:
Strong programming skills in C++ and Python
Hands-on experience with game engines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Capable of independently managing projects
The ideal candidate has also relevant experience with:
Unreal engine or equivalent
