Background: Notifications are tricky. Nobody has nailed them. Inherently they are disruptive and take away from the users' goals and intent. But yet without them, they can be costly.
I conducted a comprehensive literature review on notifications and how they are handled on mobile devices (e.g. phone, smartwatches).
Goal: To understand how notifications are currently handled, what they do well and not so well, the gaps that we could potentially fill, and how to make notifications experience way better for the users.
Subgoal: to reduce the number of clicks a user needs to access the action on notifications. We started off testing different designs for accessing content, then when my research showed that did not work well, the team shifted its focus.
