$10,000 Travel Grant Recipient 2011: Perú
In order to acquire a greater understanding of Peruvian weaving and textiles, we traveled to Peru to explore in person our three learning objectives. First, we explored how the physical environment has shaped not only the techniques used to create textiles but also the symbolism and meaning found within them. Second, learned about the role weaving and textiles play in forming identity in indigenous communities, particularly with regard to gender roles and village associations. Third, we learned how weaving has contributed to the economic life of Quechua communities through tourism and the creation of weaving collectives.
We traveled to Lima and then to three Quechua communities with strong weaving traditions: Ayacucho, Cuzco and the villages of the Sacred Valley, and the islands of Lake Titicaca near Puno.
