Choose a character: Genre: 2D Game
Choose main action key frames
Write down the main actions for your character. For example we will look at how Kyle Smith developed his character for the game Kaiju Beat.
These were his ideas but you may have some different ideas for how your character moves, attacks, sends spells, dies, is revived etc.
Range Atack
Heavy Attack
Damage or Death
Head Butt Attack
1. Normal
2. Head whip back
3. Head down bent at waist smack
Front Punch Attack
1. Normal
2. Wind Up
3. Front Punch
Heavy Attack (Spore Cloud)
1. Normal
2. Jump up with holding breath cheeks big
3. Land, Squash, Explode cloud of spores
Ideate and Rig only for those actions you predetermine.
Your drawings should show the squash and stretch, emotion, eye movement, the special effects and motion lines.
Of course, you will not all be doing mushrooms attacking a city. Your character will have 3 actions that convey who they are, how they move and behave. Your character may be a robot, a toddler, a Mech, a monster, or a plant. You show me.
Anticipation, Action, Settle
Your Neutral pose will move you between the animation sequences
The neutral pose is the settle
Limits: Do not do a walk, run or trot cycle as you will be doing that in Character Animation.
Ideation: Draw 3 poses for 3 actions - this can be done in PSD and then when it is time for you to create the rig we will make the production art in Adobe Animate.
Image Restrictions:
Determined Line drawing, One Color such as black or blue. No more color (that will be determined in Animate)
1. Ideation Page - with clearly communicated line work to describe character action pose and special effects - line only.
Make your page horizontal for best viewing on the web.
File naming convention: YourNameIdeationForRigCharacterName.psd
then save for Web and Devices: 1920 x 1080
Hand your files into Google Drive (external link)
In Canvas Submit your link from Google Drive for grading.
We will do the method that Kyle uses below but not create the render in PSD - we will render and create the finished assets in Flash now Adobe Animate CC in order to learn how to make the art in Animate and how to prep for Symbol based animation.
