Planning your first Scandinavian vacation can feel both thrilling and overwhelming. Norway and Denmark, each with their own charm, offer a mix of natural wonders, historic treasures, and modern cultural highlights. Norway is synonymous with fjords, and few are as breathtaking as the Geirangerfjord. Afterward, a stroll through Vigeland Park and Museum—the world’s largest sculpture park dedicated to a single artist.  The museum provides a more modern and equally impressive experience for art lovers. Gustav Vigeland’s hundreds of granite and bronze works celebrate human life in all its stages.  Plus, the park itself is a peaceful retreat in the heart of the capital.

Bryggen Wharf in Bergen, Norway

No first trip to Norway is complete without a visit to Bergen, the country’s gateway to the fjords. Its UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, with rows of colorful wooden houses leaning slightly with age, is both quaint and historically rich. Once a trading hub, Bryggen is now filled with charming shops, galleries, and restaurants. The area tells a story of medieval merchants while still buzzing with modern energy. It’s the perfect place to sit with a coffee or local beer and watch the world go by. Just a short walk away, The Little Mermaid statue—though modest in size—remains an enduring symbol of Denmark, paying tribute to Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale. Visiting French wine country is a dream for lovers of fine wine, beautiful landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. France, with its legendary wine regions, offers visitors a perfect mix of tasting experiences, picturesque countryside, and historical charm. Visit Épernay and Reims, where the big Champagne houses—Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and others—offer cellar tours and tastings. Hike the Samaria Gorge for a stunning nature experience.  Explore Chania, a beautiful harbor town with Venetian and Ottoman architecture. Cretan food is among the best in Greece—don’t miss dishes like dakos, lamb with herbs, and local cheeses.

Experiencing Spain

My recent trip to Spain this year was an eye-opening experience! Not just from a travel perspective, rather experiencing a foreign country gave me hope along with new stories to tell.  (See my travel photos above!)

Future Advances

Visiting Spain allowed me to see the results of future advances in transportation, crowd management, and lifestyle.  The public transportation system in Spain, especially Barcelona, is easy to navigate and ADA-friendly. With elevators at most stops, recessed curbs, and clean stations locals use the tram, train, and subway (Metro) lines exclusively. Plus, there was a high percentage of electric vehicles, which meant less petrol (gas) stations, smog, and noise.

The tourist sites, while busy, were easily managed with online pre-ticketed sales. No ticket, no entry if the quota for the day was already met. On top of that, residents were very friendly and kind despite my 2 years of high school Spanish. Citizens were helpful and took pride in their city and professions.  You got a feeling of National pride from the Spanish people which resonated the entire trip.

History Revisited

The history dates back to Roman Times, 300 B.C. Spain’s rich history has held space for wars, communism, and the monarchy. Today, the future Queen of Spain is in her second year of military service to her country. The archives, architecture, and lessons learned have not been without growing pains or evolution. But the evolution is present and felt throughout your interactions with people. 

The population is concentrated in the cities, but a vast agricultural community keeps the food prices reasonable and fresh. I’ve never tasted such sweet tomatoes or such rich creamy butter. Plus, eggs were $2.85 a dozen! There’s something to say for their proximity to other European resources, and it shows in the Spanish food.

Finally, I would say from a travel perspective it provided hope for me personally. To see a thriving country, with low food costs, a content nation, and smart innovations for their citizens. I can see why many foreigners flock to Spain to experience the lifestyle. And why taxes are levied to keep the cities clean and stabilized. Put Spain on your travel list this year, and you won’t regret it. 

Traveling to Iceland This Summer

Visiting Iceland in the summer is an unforgettable vacation, offering breathtaking landscapes and unique cultural experiences. The long days of summer provide a lot of time to explore the country's stunning natural wonders.

One must-visit site is the Golden Circle, a popular tourist route that includes three major attractions. First, Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s known for its geological significance and beautiful rift valleys.  Visitors can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, offering a unique perspective on the Earth's movements.

Next is the geothermal area of Haukadalur, home to the famous Geysir Hot Spring. Here, the Strokkur geyser erupts every few minutes, shooting boiling water high into the air. Nearby, the majestic Gullfoss Waterfall cascades into a deep canyon, creating stunning rainbows on sunny days.

Another highlight is the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa located in a lava field. Soaking in its milky blue waters surrounded by black volcanic rock is a refreshing experience. The lagoon also offers luxurious spa treatments, making it a perfect spot to relax.

For those seeking adventure, a trip to Vatnajökull National Park is essential. This park features Europe’s largest glacier, offering chances for glacier hiking and ice climbing. The stunning Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, filled with floating icebergs, is also worth a visit.

Reykjavik, the capital city, is vibrant and welcoming, with numerous museums, galleries, and restaurants. Don't miss the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, which offers panoramic views of the city from its tower.

Iceland in the summer offers a blend of stunning natural beauty, geothermal wonders, and cultural richness. It’s perfect for your first solo travel experience too. From the Golden Circle to the Blue Lagoon, there’s something for every traveler in this enchanting country.

Portugal in 2025

Portugal, a country rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, is one of Europe’s most popular travel destinations for 2025. From its stunning coastline to its vibrant cities, Portugal offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re drawn to historical sites, picturesque hiking trails, or world-class museums, Portugal has it all. Here’s a guide to the top tourist spots, hiking destinations, and museums to see while visiting this charming country.

Lisbon
No trip to Portugal is complete without a visit to Lisbon, the country’s vibrant capital. Lisbon’s charm lies in its mix of old-world charm and modern liveliness. Wander through the historic neighborhood of Alfama, where narrow streets, colorful buildings, and Fado music create an unforgettable atmosphere. Don’t miss the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These showcase the grandeur of Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, is famous for its wine and stunning architecture. The historic Ribeira district, with its cobbled streets and colorful houses, is a must-see. As a librarian, don’t miss the Livraria Lello, one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Tickets are well worth the history and tour. Or visit the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, for spectacular views of the Douro River. Of course, no visit to Porto is complete without a tour of the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.  Here you can learn about and taste the city’s famous export – Cheers!

Sintra
Located just a short drive from Lisbon, Sintra is a fairy-tale town nestled in the hills of the Serra de Sintra. It’s home to some of Portugal’s most stunning palaces and gardens, including the colorful National Palace of Pena. This palace looks like something out of a storybook. The Moorish Castle, with its breathtaking views, and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira, with its gardens and tunnels, are must-visits. Sintra’s blend of natural beauty and architectural wonders makes it one of Portugal’s most magical destinations.

Hiking
Portugal’s diverse landscapes offer excellent hiking trails for nature lovers. The Rota Vicentina, located in the southwestern Alentejo and Algarve regions, is one of the most beautiful coastal trails in Europe. The trail offers a mix of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and quaint fishing villages. The Fisherman’s Trail, in particular, is a favorite among hikers for its stunning ocean views and challenging terrain.

Peneda-Gerês National Park, Portugal’s only national park, is a paradise for hikers. Located in the northern part of the country, the park features lush forests, crystal-clear rivers, and ancient stone villages. Take your pick in any of Portugal’s many cities to enjoy nature and get your heart pumping.

Finally, Portugal’s many museums and ancient churches are a must see for your travel agenda. Carmo Archaeological Museum is situated in the ruins of the old Church of Santa Maria do Carm. This church was founded in 1389 by D. Nuno Alvares Pereira. While in Lisbon don’t miss the most ornate church ever seen, Igreja de Sao Rogue. With its gilded interiors and opulent chapels, every turn is full of history and a great photo opportunity.

Visiting Canada this fall offers an extraordinary blend of vibrant foliage, crisp air, and a variety of activities in the country. Whether you're a nature lover or just looking for a cultural getaway, Canada in the fall has something for everyone. Quebec: Fall Foliage

Quebec is a prime destination for fall foliage. The Laurentian Mountains, just north of Montreal, offer breathtaking vistas of autumn leaves. Mont-Tremblant National Park is particularly popular for its hiking trails and panoramic views. Nova Scotia’s Cabot Trail is often cited as one of the most beautiful drives in the world, especially in fall. This scenic highway loops around the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, offering breathtaking coastal views and endless autumn colors. Halifax, with its rich maritime history and lively waterfront, is another great spot to explore. Don’t miss the picturesque towns of Lunenburg and Annapolis Royal.

Alberta: Majestic Mountains

In Alberta, the Canadian Rockies provide a stunning backdrop for fall adventures. Banff and Jasper National Parks are renowned for their dramatic landscapes and diverse wildlife. The Icefields Parkway, connecting Banff and Jasper, offers unparalleled views of mountains, glaciers, and vibrant fall colors. Lake Louise, with its turquoise waters is a go to destination for many during the busier summer months. Banff is a must see on my travel list for the year.

Dublin, Ireland in a Weekend

Dublin, the capital of Ireland, offers historic charm and modern attractions, making it the perfect destination for a long weekend. Begin your journey at Trinity College, home to the Book of Kells. My First Waymo Ride  November 2023

Ever wonder what it’s like trying something totally new?  My first Waymo ride in a driverless car for work was wild and here’s why.

No Driver

Yep, the car got me from Point A to my home without a driver! The car maneuvered through traffic and “watched” for foot traffic (which can be challenging in Tempe near Arizona State University.) All six miles without a bump or hitch the entire drive. The car maintained the speed limit and was never “aggressive” like some people in vehicles can be.  Plus, all the stares from the other cars was hilarious since I was in the back seat!

Easy to Use

To locate a Waymo vehicle and have your ride arrive, install the Waymo app.  The app is similar to Uber or Lyft in that Waymo knows where you’re currently located and the address of where you want to go. Once paid, the app tells you how long the wait will be and your estimated time of arrival. When Waymo arrives, driverless, you enter the code provided by the app to unlock the door and enjoy your ride. Easy to use for work or personal errands any time of day even during a late night.

The car takes over, and safely drives you to your final drop off spot. That’s it, except for that weird feeling of being out of control and anticipating traffic. The car’s multiple computer sensors detect obstacles and maps out other vehicles surrounding the car. The trip was uneventful and so convenient when you just “need a quick ride.”

Tempe, Arizona

I live in Tempe and Waymo, along with other companies, is piloting the driverless program here. The cars regularly “hang out” waiting to be called up in my neighborhood. I’m located next to Arizona State University, so I live in an urban hub with lots of activities, tourists, and students. Tempe is a perfect “testing ground” for this innovative technology that is being refined to go mainstream in time.

I think the main obstacle to overcome isn’t the technology or driverless ride, but rather people’s expectations. It’s difficult to change behaviors especially as something as emotional as driving and our love of cars.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 10 or 15 years and how this new industry is adapted.

When you are planning to travel, not matter how big or small the trip, follow these top 3 tips. Your trip will be memorable and hassle free with only three simple steps.

Check Weather

The first tip when planning your trip is to check the weather conditions. My dream trip is to Scotland. However, there’s a reason the “off season” is late fall and winter. It’s very cold and rainy! Many of the most famous attractions are closed due to the wintery conditions. And, this limits your options for lodging, activities, and your overall comfort on the trip. So be sure to always check the weather, and consider traveling right before the “low season.” This will allow you to capture the best deals and beat the high season crowds.

Book Transportation

The very next step is to book your transportation or at least determine your method of travel. Will you be traveling by train or be driving yourself?  Do you need to book a flight? With more people traveling post Covid, you need to plan your transportation ahead and don’t wait.  As mentioned earlier, traveling during your destination’s slow season is best. But, with so many travelers making up for lost time, your vacation spot might not have an "off season" any longer. Do your research and book ahead with your transportation and transfer needs right from the beginning of your travel planning.

Decide on Lodging

You’ve got your destination all mapped out. You booked your flight and know how to transfer to your vacation dream spot. Now, book your hotel, hostel, Bed and Breakfast whatever lodging choice you’ve made. Travelers today have many choices at many price-points these days. Do you want to be able to cook some of your meals?  Do you need to be close to public transportation? Where will you be spending most of your time on vacation? Are activities at the hotel important or do you want privacy? Decide what’s important and learn from my mistakes.

La Grand-Place

My exploration of Brussels began at the iconic La Grand-Place, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This site is the beating heart of the city. Stepping into this magnificent square felt like being transported back in time. The stunning architecture of the guildhalls and the intricate details of the Town Hall, left me in awe. As I wandered around the square, I couldn't help but imagine the vibrant markets and historic events that had unfolded here over the centuries. The Grand Place truly embodies the rich history and cultural heritage of Brussels.

Atomium

Just a short distance from the city center, the Atomium stood tall as a symbol of innovation and modern times. This iconic structure, originally built for the 1958 World Expo, represents an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. As I climbed its spheres, I marveled at the panoramic views of Brussels from the observation deck. The Atomium also houses a fascinating exhibition that explores the history and significance of this architectural miracle. It was a surreal experience to witness the fusion of science, art, and design within this extraordinary monument.

Belgian Chocolate and Waffles

No visit to Brussels would be complete without indulging in the city's renowned culinary delights. Belgian chocolate is a true sensory delight.  I found myself exploring the quaint chocolate shops, savoring the rich flavors, and delighting in the artistic creations that decorated the shelves. The aroma of freshly made waffles wafted through the streets, tempting me at every turn. I couldn't resist trying the mouthwatering Brussels waffles, topped with powdered sugar, fruit, or chocolate sauce. These sweet treats are a true embodiment of Belgian food excellence.

Royal Museums of Fine Arts

For art enthusiasts, a visit to one of the Museum of Fine Arts is an absolute must. This prestigious institution houses an extensive collection of masterpieces from renowned artists such as Bruegel, Rubens, and Magritte. As I wandered through the galleries, I was captivated by the diverse range of artistic styles and historical periods on display. The museums offer a journey through the evolution of art. This allows visitors to immerse themselves in the creativity and genius of the Masters to modern day artists.

Netherlands Family Vacation   August 2023

Visiting the Netherlands for vacation? This is a beautiful country with many exciting tourist destinations and spots to visit for families. Here are some of the best places to visit while vacationing in the Netherlands with your family.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Netherlands, and for good reason. Families can enjoy a boat tour of the city's canals, visit the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum, and explore the vibrant culture of the city. Be sure to take bike ride or trolley to the Ann Frank Museum or your lunch at a café.  Amsterdam is friendly for pedestrians and the food is amazing.

Keukenhof Gardens

The Keukenhof Gardens are a must-visit destination for families who love nature and beauty. The gardens are home to millions of tulips and other flowers. If traveling with your family, there are many options to get to the gardens. Public transportation is available as well as rental car or taxis. Visitors can enjoy walking through the stunning displays and taking photos. Plan on at least two hours to take in all the walking paths and tranquil botanical settings.

The Hague

The Hague is the third-largest city in the Netherlands and is home to many exciting tourist destinations. Families can visit Mauritshuis, the “most beautiful museum in the Netherlands.” Home to Danish and Fleming artists, including Vermeer’s famous work, Girl with a Pearl Earring.” The Peace Palace houses the International Court of Justice, the governing body of the United Nations. Your family can also visit the beautiful beach of Scheveningen for more water activities and quaint villages.

Kinderdijk Windmills

The Kinderdijk Windmills are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a great destination for families who want to learn about Dutch history and culture. Visitors can tour the windmills and learn about their significance in Dutch life. There are approximately 1000 classical water and windmills now open for the tourists to enjoy.

Rotterdam

Finally, finish up in the city of Rotterdam. This vibrant city with a bustling port and many exciting attractions will keep you busy for days.  Families can visit the Euromast Tower, take a boat tour of the port, and explore the city's modern architecture. The views are breathtaking from every point. Don’t forget to visit the Royal Delft Museum if you enjoy Dutch culture and history. The popular blue pottery has been around since the 1600’s and high tea is also available.

Traveling to Hawaii  July 2023  (Not International, but feels like another country!) 

**I wrote this piece before the devastating fires on Maui. Please consider where you will be traveling in Hawaii and if the airport is welcoming tourists again. Our prayers are with the residents of Lihaina.

The Hawaiian Islands are a popular destination for summer vacation, and with good reason. With beautiful beaches, lush tropical landscapes, and unique culture, Hawaii offers something for everyone. If you're planning a trip to Hawaii, here are some tips to help you make the most of your time.

Where to Stay?

First, decide which islands you want to visit. While each island has its own unique attractions, some of the most popular include Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. Consider factors like your budget, interests, and your level of activity when making your decision.

Once you've decided on your itinerary, make travel arrangements as soon as possible. Flights and accommodations can fill up quickly during peak travel season. It's best to book in advance before school vacation schedules. Consider staying in a vacation rental, which can offer more space and amenities than a traditional hotel.

When you arrive in Hawaii, take some time to adjust to the time difference and climate. The islands can be hot and humid, so be sure to stay hydrated and wear plenty of sunscreen. Consider renting a car to explore the island, or take advantage of public transportation options like buses or shuttles.

When it comes to dining, Hawaii offers a range of options to suit every taste and budget. Sample local favorites like poke, plate lunches, and shaved ice.  Think about a splurge on a romantic dinner at a fine dining restaurant. Be sure to try some of the fresh fruit and seafood that Hawaii is known for like mangoes and pineapples.

Finally, take some time to relax and enjoy the slower pace of island life. Hawaii's laid-back vibe is part of what makes it such a popular destination. Be sure to take some time to unwind and soak up the scenery and ocean breezes. Traveling to Spain this Summer  June 2023

A week long agenda to make trip planning easy.

Spain is a country rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. A week in Spain is the perfect amount of time to explore its different regions and experience its unique charm. Check out suggestions for food, transportation, and some of the best sites to visit in Spain.

 Day 1: Arrive in Madrid

Arrive in Madrid, the capital of Spain, in the morning and check into your hotel.

Take a walk around the city center, visiting landmarks such as the Royal Palace, the Prado Museum,

For lunch, try some traditional Spanish dishes at one of Madrid's many tapas bars. Also known as appetizers, tapas restaurants are famous for Spanish wines and small bites. Some popular tapas include "patatas bravas" (spicy fried potatoes), and "croquetas" (deep-fried balls potatoes and meat or fish).

For dinner, catch a flamenco show at one of the city's famous tablaos or a small traditional venue.

Day 2: Madrid - Toledo Day Trip

Take a day trip to Toledo, a beautiful medieval city located just an hour's train ride from Madrid.

Spend the day exploring Toledo's narrow streets, visiting landmarks such as the Cathedral of Toledo and the Alcázar Fortress in Toledo.

For lunch, try some of Toledo's famous marzipan sweets, made from ground almonds and sugar and used in cake decorating.

Return to Madrid in the evening for a leisurely and un-rushed supper in a quaint café.

Day 3: Madrid - Seville

Take an early morning train to Seville, the capital of Andalusia.

Check into your hotel and spend the day exploring Seville's many landmarks, such as the Alcázar of Seville and the Giralda Tower.

For lunch, try some traditional Andalusian dishes such as "gazpacho" (a cold soup made of tomatoes and peppers) and "pescaíto frito" (deep-fried fish).

At dinnertime, enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the city and have dinner at one of Seville's many traditional restaurants.

Day 4: Seville - Granada

Take a train to Granada, home of the Alhambra, one of the most visited tourist attractions in Spain. Spend the day visiting this palace and fort-like complex from Moorish times. Then take a stroll around the city's historic center taking in the ancient architecture.  Try some traditional Granadian dishes such as "papas a la importancia" (potatoes cooked in a spicy tomato sauce.)

In the evening, enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife full of clubs, music, and culture including Spain’s noted wines. Cheers!

Day 5: Granada - Barcelona

Take a train to Barcelona, one of the most visited cities in Spain known for bull fights, beaches, and green spaces.

Check into your hotel and spend the day exploring the city, visiting landmarks such as the Barcelona's Parc de Collserola. This green space is 22 times larger than New York's Central Park, making it the world's largest metropolitan park.  Barcelona is also the greenest city in the world, making it climate friendlier than any other European city.

For a mid-day break, try some traditional Catalan dishes such as "pa amb tomàquet" (toasted bread with tomato) and "escalivada" (a dish of grilled vegetables). Lots of healthy food choices in this region of Spain.

In the evening, take a walk around the city's famous Las Ramblas. Or take a ride around the 112 miles of bike paths throughout the city.

Day 6: Barcelona - Costa Brava

Take a train or bus to Costa Brava, the beautiful coastal region located in the north of Catalonia. This is the best beach in Spain and will give you a full view of the Mediterranean Sea. Prepare for your trip back home and all the memories you have to share.

This schedule can easily be modified for a long weekend, centered around one region or the capitol city. Whatever you decide, book your next travel destination to Spain to experience a rich mix of culture, food, and vast landscapes.  Safe travels.

Planning Your Dream Vacation   May 2023

Planning your dream vacation or a once in a lifetime trip can be an overwhelming task. But with a bit of organization and preparation, it can also be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Here are some steps you can take to plan your next dream vacation.

Budget

Before you start planning your dream vacation, it's important to determine your budget. Consider how much you can afford to spend and what your priorities are. This will help you narrow down your choices and make better decisions about where to go. Then you can decide where to stay and what activities to do accordingly. Part of the fun is researching activities and finding the best price for your VRBO or hotel.

Research Destinations

As a librarian, this speaks to my heart; research! Once, you have a general idea of your budget, start researching different locales. Look into popular travel guides, check out online reviews, and ask for recommendations from friends and family. Considerations to keep in mind are climate, safety, and especially the activities available in each location. Do you want a relaxing trip? Or, are you willing to be on a non-stop daily race to see all the tourist spots during your vacation? Ask yourself these honest questions when looking at your dream trip.

Make A Schedule

After you've narrowed down your options, create an itinerary for your trip. Consider how many days you have available, what you want to see and do, and how you want to travel. Be sure to factor in time for rest and relaxation, as well as time for any unexpected delays or changes in plans. This is especially true after the December, 2022 disaster with air travel that so many experienced recently.

Book It

Once you've created your vacation schedule, start making your reservations and book it. This may include flights, accommodations, transportation, tours and activities. Don't forget to check the terms and conditions of your bookings, especially if you need to cancel or change plans. Even though the pandemic is technically over, these next few years will test us globally as we increase international travel.

Be Prepared

Before you leave, be sure to prepare for your trip. This may include getting the necessary travel documents, packing, and arranging for any necessary childcare or pet-sitting. Don't forget to also arrange for travel insurance or even a home sitter in case of any unexpected events. Planning ahead for anything will allow you to enjoy your vacation more.

After all the planning and preparation, it's time to enjoy your dream vacation. Remember to stay flexible, be open to new experiences, and take lots of photos to remember your trip. I always “relive” my vacations when I post on social media or write in my journal about my adventures. If you need to getaway this spring check out these travel trends popular in 2023. Remember to always check ahead for travel requirements depending upon the location and local health regulations.

Traveling by Train

Traveling by train has become much more popular since the recent meltdown of some airlines last winter. Trains are much more reliable and, in some cases, more economical for a trip. Depending upon your destination and timeline, rail travel is also a travel experience in of itself.

In the United States, Amtrak is the main carrier for passenger train travel. If you want to venture abroad there are many rail lines to choose depending upon the country. Many amenities are available on rail lines now, so check out the location and have a new experience!

Road Trips

Traveling by automobile has always been popular. With gas prices declining, road trips cross country has become more popular. Again, the reliability factor for driving your own car or a rental is also greater than flying sometimes. 

The key to a successful road trip is planning ahead, always. Check your route for detours or road closures. Even road construction can be a downer if you don’t plan for the extra time it takes to navigate.

Make sure to explore sites along the route or tourist stops that have a great appeal. Driving allows you the freedom to stop and go when you want and see the “off the beaten path” experiences. Don’t miss a thing and plan your stops to enjoy picnic meals or roadside attractions.

Staycation

Finally, exploring your hometown is also one of the best vacations. Staying at home and exploring the local sites you normally miss is economical and less stressful. There are few travel expenses, so you can spend your budget on meals out, concerts, or a special sporting event. If you live in a rural area, traveling to a larger city is still less expensive than flying cross country to enjoy similar sites.

Really, anything goes this year if you plan ahead, have a plan B, and just relax and enjoy your vacation. Traveling is about new experiences and relaxing, whatever you decide.

London, the capital of England, is a vibrant and diverse city that offers something for everyone. Whether you're a history buff, a culture lover, or simply looking for a fun weekend getaway, London has it all. Here's what a long weekend in London might look like.

Day 1: Start your long weekend by exploring London's rich history and culture. Begin by visiting Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarchy. From there, take a stroll through St. James's Park, a beautiful green space in the heart of London.

Weekend in Paris   January 2023

Paris, the City of Lights, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. With its charming streets, world-class museums, and delicious food, it's easy to see why. If you're planning a trip to Paris, here's how to make the most of a long weekend in the city.

Eiffel Tower

The first thing you'll want to do is visit the iconic Eiffel Tower. This 134-year-old landmark is a must-see for anyone visiting Paris. Take the elevator or climb the stairs to the top for a breathtaking view of the city. If you're visiting during the evening, be sure to stick around for the light show that takes place every hour on the hour.

Louvre Museum

For dinner, be sure to try some traditional French dishes such as escargots, coq au vin, or bouillabaisse. My first taste of escargots was surprisingly delicious, and buttery enjoyed from street side café.

It's no wonder it's one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. With a bit of planning and willingness to explore, you can make the most of your three days in Paris.

Packing Tips for Your Next Trip   December 2022

Need packing tips for your next trip?  Is your next trip a long weekend getaway or seven days to a dream destination? Then, you will need to bring enough clothes and necessities to help make your travel comfortable and affordable. Here are some tried and true suggestions on packing just enough for your next travel adventure.

Carryon Luggage

Having a carryon bag is essential for getting everything into one bag. A solid carryon bag also saves on luggage fees imposed by some of the airlines. A carryon with wheels helps navigating the airport quickly but check the size to be sure the bag fits in the overhead compartment. This is my first rule, if you can bring one carryon bag for free, then that is all you pack!  Having your bag with you eliminates the worry of not having anything show up on the luggage carousel. It also makes for a quicker airport departure to your ground transportation and your travel fun. Buy a sturdy bag within your budget and double check it will comply with measurements for the FAA, you’ll thank yourself.

Wear Clothes More Often

Plan out your outfits, even for children, and coordinate tops and bottoms so you can wear clothing more than once.  Denim shorts, jeans, warm sweaters can all be recycled into another outfit and save room in your bag. Take travel sized shampoo and lotion. You can also check with your hotel for complimentary bottles of smaller products which also save you money and space. Check the weather so you have the appropriate clothes to keep you warm. Check out your travel destination for drugstores that can handle last minute needs such as an umbrella or rain slicker.  Legwork and planning will make your trip much more enjoyable, and you feel prepared.

Roll, Roll, Roll your Stuff

You’ve got the bag, the outfits, and toiletries you need and now you need to it fit into one bag.  You accomplish this by rolling your clothes to minimize wrinkles and space. If you have formal items, using dry cleaner bags to roll your pants, dresses and jackets will further minimize creases while traveling. Shoes and heavier items on the bottom, stuffing rolled underwear, socks and gloves into shoe openings helps conserves space. Finally, pack your bag a few days ahead to help remind yourself of everything needed for the trip. Safe travels!

Traveling to the United Kingdom Now or Later?   November 2022 

If you want to travel to the United Kingdom, now is the time to plan. Check out these simple tips to make your trip easy on your budget and perfect for winter traveling plans.

England

With the British pound struggling, now is a good time to take that dream trip to London, Scotland, or Ireland. The American dollar will buy more during this economic time, and winter is usually a less crowded time to visit.

Some English sites might have limited hours, such as Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. However, the city offers many tourist sites to appeal to any age traveler. You can visit the Albert and Victoria Museum or Hyde Park fairly easily via the London Metro. Be sure you dress for changing weather and pack an umbrella to be safe and dry. Christmas markets will also be available in many English cities to get you into the holiday spirit.

Scotland

Scotland is another UK country to check out this year. The weather will be colder and possibly rainy than in summer months. Snow is also very common in the Scottish Highlands. However, the crowds are much less in the winter months, so airfares are less expensive. Some historic sites on your bucket list or National Trust properties might be closed or have limited hours. Be sure to check ahead for availability and hours of operation.

You might want to consider hiring a professional guide to help navigate the vast Scottish countryside. But book early or attach your name to a waiting list. This will ensure you have the tour guide and travel locations confirmed to see ahead of your trip.

Ireland

Ireland is in travel news with the movie, The Banshees of Inisherin. The shooting location on the Irish Coastline has a starring role, as well the superb cast. Ireland boasts ancient history and museums as well as castles, such as famous Kilkenny to visit. Driving in Ireland is much like rules in Scotland, so if you’re driving be aware and stay left.

You should book travel plans for the United Kingdom in the next few months to take advantage of lower prices. You will enjoy a bucket list trip full of great travel memories with any of these travel destinations. Enjoy and safe travels!

My Trip to the Getty Museums - (Europe Without the Cost)   October 2022

Would you like to experience Europe, without traveling overseas?  Did you know there are FREE museums in California that provide a European experience nestled in the Los Angeles hills. Check out the two Getty Museums (yes for free,) walk on the beach, and enjoy a long weekend full of European art and artifacts.

Opened in 1997,  The Getty Center and Getty Villa Museum are part of a billion-dollar trust that runs both public museums. Founded from the personal collection of oil tycoon, J. Paul Getty, the grounds alone are something to see!  Here’s what I found to make your next trip more enjoyable at these FREE travel destinations in Los Angles, California.

In the Heart of L.A.

If you plan your trip for a long weekend, the Getty visits can easily take up two days. Both museums are located about 30 minutes apart, so planning your visits accordingly is advised. The Getty Center is in the hills of downtown Los Angeles. Arriving close to opening is advised due to the traffic of California. A tram will take you from the parking lot (or you can walk) up the steep hills to the Center’s entrance. The gardens surrounding the Center and Art Library are truly a site to see.

Classic Monte and Picasso paintings along with abstract works and can be found at the Getty Center. While the collections on display were not plentiful, (I visited right after the Covid restrictions were lifted.) I would plan for at least three hours or longer to enjoy the museum.  Especially if you’d like to enjoy a picnic on the grounds or walk the flower gardens, a half day is needed.

Life-size sculptures dot the outside patio area along with breathtaking views of the valley below.  Docent led tours are hosted on the hour explaining the collections, gardens, and architecture of this magnificent campus. Getty is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Getty Villa Museum

Located 13 miles west of the Center is the Getty Villa Museum off Pacific Coast Highway. Housed in the original Getty Museum, the Villa is a re-creation of an ancient Roman country house. In the heart of Pacific Palisades, enjoy the ancient Greek and Roman art along with the surrounding gardens.  There are also cafes and tea service at both locations, and reservations are required.

While timed-entry tickets can be made online for both museums, book early as some weekend dates and times fill up fast. There is a fee to park, and dress in layers as some indoor temperatures are very cool in the museums.  Book a trip the Gettys and get a taste of Europe without the cost of much traveling.

If you have extra time check out the Santa Monica Pier or Farmers Market on the weekends for fresh produce, flowers, and homemade products. This weekend trip can't be beat for culture and beauty with some easy planning.

Now that I have your attention, I want to assure you that all the information shared below does work and will make a big difference in your next travel plan. It will take time to determine what the best fit is for your personal travel needs. However, if you pay off your credit cards investing the time in another travel card will pay off. Especially if you travel more than twice a year abroad, you’ll see the cost benefit in the first year.

Airline Tips

Another strategy is planning your air travel around less busier days midweek, such as Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Most travelers use two-day weekends or longer holiday weekends for departures and arrivals. Avoid holidays and fly before and after holidays midweek for the best fares. Being flexible will go a long to avoid cancellations and flight delays these days.

Another important travel tip when flying, always book direct flights (if possible) on the first plane of the day.This strategy works for every airline, whether budget or luxury. Your chances of delays and cancellation increases as the day goes on, so get out early on that first flight. Early morning flights are usually the cheapest due to the lack of convenience for some travelers especially families.

Be Loyal

By loyal, I’m referring to finding a brand of hotel you like and sign up for their reward program. When you stick to the brand and use those accommodations consistently, rewards follow. When you refer friends and family, you also receive (in most cases) additional rewards, as well as the new member.

Top 3 Paris Sights this Summer    July 2022

Covid is over and you’ve booked that trip to Paris.  Now what?  With limited time, make sure to see these top three iconic sights in Paris this summer.

Louvre Museum

Centered in the heart of downtown Paris, the Louvre Museum is a must see and can be navigated in one day. Start at the iconic pyramid in the courtyard and make sure to buy tickets online to secure your spot early.  As of this writing, reservations are not needed, but with travel requirements changing frequently, check the website to be sure. Currently public hours are 9AM to 6PM.

First check out the most popular paintings to avoid the large crowds. Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, which in person is a rather small portrait, can accommodate 400 visitors at a time. Don’t wait for the room to fill up and catch your photos early in the day for this masterpiece. Be sure to plan your lunch break before 11AM or after 3PM to avoid the crowds in the eating areas. Resting throughout the day will help you enjoy the Tuileries Garden surrounding the Louvre for more photo ops.

Eiffel Tower

Within walking distance from the Champs-Elysees the Eiffel Tower is a must-see Paris tourist stop.  Starting out early will be your best chance to see the city from above without major crowds.  There will be a wait, so buy your tickets early to secure your timed visit.  The admission is worth the view and unbelievable vantage point of the entire city.

Take as much time as you need to learn the history of the iconic tower and background behind the build. You’ll get to view Eiffel’s office at the top, so be sure not to miss it. Public hours run longer from 9AM to 11:45PM, so you’ll be able to plan an evening visit if you’d prefer.

Palace of Versailles

A 30-minute train ride from Paris will transport you to another world built for a king! Versailles was the Chateau home and gardens for King Louis the XV and his daughters. A short 15-minute walk from the train station will take you to the Versailles entrance gates and open your eyes to the opulence of another time. Early birds be sure to que up in line as it starts forming before open hours.  The entrance fee allows you the audio tour throughout the palace via your mobile phone.

However, my favorite part of Versailles was the gardens. You’re able to roam at your leisure and see Queen Marie-Antoinette’s cottage and the surrounding flowers, ponds, and stables. Public hours for the palace tour are 9AM-6:30PM with garden availability varying. Timed tickets are a must, so check out the website before your visit and plan a full day.

As long as there have been travelers, there have been many ways travels could go wrong. Just because they could doesn’t mean they should. Here are tips to help you travel smarter and safer for any trip especially overseas.

Pickpocket-Proof Yourself

Major metropolises such as London, Paris, Mexico City, and Los Angeles are all incredible places to visit. They’re also notorious for their pickpocket problem. We all want to be trusting but be smart about who you trust. Remember to always stay in a well-monitored area and keep a tight grip on any purses or bags. You may also want to leave valuables or personal papers back in your hotel or Airbnb, just in case. Consider letting someone else back home store copies of your passport and ID.

Be Ready Weather-Wise

Another thing about a place like London? The weather can change in 10 minutes. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s rainy, then back to sunshine once more. Changeable weather’s true of other big cities such as San Francisco as well, so always be sure to have an umbrella or change of clothes handy.

Public Transit Issues

If you want to annoy locals in London, stand on the left side of the Underground escalators, blocking passengers trying to push by. If you want to anger Parisians, Los Angelinos, and Muscovites, stand right in the middle of the already-crowded streets, and make traffic even worse. Of course, if you want to get along in these cities, you should avoid doing all of that and learn and obey the local public transit rules and culture. You should also do some research on the most cost-efficient ways to get around. For example, cities such as Amsterdam and Berlin have fantastically inexpensive tram systems, which may be way less expensive than renting a car. They can likewise provide a more engaging travel experience.

Nobody likes flight cancellations, but when they happen, you must act fast. The longer you take to book a new flight, the more chaotic your travel schedule can get. At the same time, you don’t want to rush. Review your options and ask the help desk for assistance. You can also do your best to try and avoid chaotic weather conditions and the flight cancellations they can cause by traveling to areas known for bad weather during calmer seasons. India and the Gulf Coast are lovely, but it may be best not to travel to either during monsoon or hurricane season if possible if you want to avoid travel chaos.

Travel Ideas from TV Shows        April 2022

Are you a big binge watcher or absolutely love a certain TV show? Have you wanted to travel to those shows’ locations and see where it all happens? I’m writing this since I’ve been trying to travel to Scotland due to my love of the STARZ series Outlander. The pandemic had other plans, so this is the year I fulfill my dream.  There are other loved TV shows that have increased tourism to long forgotten destinations. Check out these famous locations for travel ideas.

The Ozarks

The hit Netflix series Ozark, produced by Jason Bateman is set in the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri which has seen an uptick in tourism.  However, the filming for the show takes place an hour outside Atlanta, Georgia at Allatoona and Lanier Lakes. The scenery is very similar, and the climate is the same. Filming locations were more plentiful in Georgia. So, check out the Ozarks to get a feel for Marty and Wendy’s new home.  How they deal with a rural lifestyle and their new circumstances is what makes Ozark so popular!

All Creatures Great and Small

This PBS drama is set in the Yorkshire countryside of England in the 1930’s. To find a rural location, the village of Grassington was used for Darrowby, the setting in the TV series.  Besides the quaint cobblestone roads and Tudor-style buildings the town’s location is small. A day trip to the village square would reveal the area as it was 200 years ago. 

The pub’s interior shots used in the show are filmed at The Green Dragon in Hardraw, located in the North. While the exteriors are all filmed at The Devonshire pub in Grassington. Finally, Broughton Hall is used as the home of town aristocrat Mrs. Pumphrey. This estate is in the town of Skipton also in North Yorkshire. If you’re ever in the Yorkshire Dales check out the many filming sites. Season three of the series will be produced in 2023.

Outlander

Set in the Highlands of Scotland and early North Carolina during the 1700’s, this STARZ series has a huge fanbase.  While all filming does take place in Scotland, even for the North Carolina storylines, fans have flocked to many sites. Midhope Castle stands in as the childhood home, Lallybroch, of our hero, Jamie Fraser. While season two used the city of Prague to stand in for 1740’s France.  The North Carolina settings in seasons 3 and 4 area also filmed in rural Scotland with elaborate pre-Revolutionary War America sets. 

My Scotland driving trip will take me to Fife, Culloden Moor, and Fort William all used in Outlander’s first season.  I’m hoping for more travel ideas as new TV shows catch our attention.  Where will be you be traveling this summer?

Post Pandemic Travel Tips  March  2022

The last two years has put some travel plans on hold and made others scrap vacation goals completely.  Here are a few tips to make your next vacation or weekend getaway fun and safe in our new normal of traveling. It’s the year of the Tiger, so explore!

Mask Up 

Before you leave, know what your destination’s policies and travel restrictions are beforehand. Are vaccines required to fly into and out of your vacation location?  Do you need to wear a mask indoors or only public spaces?  What are the capacity limits in my hotel, and what does that look like? Also know what masking requirements are for your new locale and respect it.  Your trip will be much more enjoyable and hassle free. With restrictions being lifted or changing constantly, doing your homework will pay off.

Prepare to Pay More  

Rising inflation along with pandemic restrictions have forced most prices to increase a great deal. Do yourself a favor and check fees and rates before you make your travel arrangements. You want to make sure there are no unexpected charges on your final bill. With wages increasing and food costs higher than last month, travelers will be paying more for goods and services in the future.

Call ahead, check websites, and research your tourist sites. Check activities for any recent changes in admissions and hours of operation. You don't want any unnecessary surprises after the fact.  For example, parking was once FREE at Las Vegas resorts is now a paid amenity. Be prepared to pay higher prices for services when traveling.

Have a Plan  

You need to be prepared to have alternative plans if safety restrictions or capacity limits are in place at your destination. It's important to have a plan if the rules change mid-trip. If your heart was set on visiting a local tourist attraction that recently has had to reduce hours or close entirely, you don’t want to be disappointed. Public health mandates vary widely from state to state and country to country. You need to be flexible in your agenda and have other activities if your first choice is not available. This will also make your trip much more enjoyable and memorable.

Currently, as of this writing, airlines are mandating all passengers to wear masks in airports and on all flights domestic and foreign. Mask restrictions vary within countries, so check travel websites frequently before leaving home and be prepared with at least two approved face coverings, hand sanitizer and disposable wipes for your trip.  Enjoy and safe travels!

Handling Travel Culture Shock Overseas   January 2022

Travel is a great way to discover new things about the world and yourself. That said, what you discover can come as a shock at first.  If you’re traveling somewhere very different from your home and staying abroad for an extended period, it will be an adjustment. Thankfully, for as much of a surprise as culture shock can be, there are plenty of ways to handle it.

Manage Expectations

While it’s great to be excited about your journey, you need to be realistic. Perhaps the most famous example of tourist expectations run amok is the “Paris Syndrome.” This is when visitors to the City of Lights build up such impossible expectations, that it’s going to be the romantic metropolis of their dreams that they can’t help but be disappointed. This isn’t a mere letdown, either. Sufferers can experience dizziness, headaches, and vomiting. Furthermore, the Japanese embassy in Paris has a 24-hour hotline for struggling tourists. The lesson here? Do your research before you leave. Find out where you're headed, learn what to expect, and be realistic.

Accept Your Feelings

Denial never solved anything (just ask Freud). If you’re feeling culture shock or homesickness, it’s best to be honest about it. Talk to others about how you feel and why. You might discover that others feel the same or they can help alleviate some of your uneasiness. The process of talking, itself, might prove therapeutic and help you get over your culture shock.

Stay Connected to Your Home

Bring something from home with you on your trip, like a family photo or special tea. Watch TV shows from your home country, or Zoom chat with friends and family. All these strategies can be a great way of staying connected. Home is the place with the people you care about. Therefore, bring along a reminder of home. Being someplace new can be exciting, but it’s healthy to remember your roots.

Get Out and Be Social

If you’re an introvert, this is easier said than done. Still, if you’ve ever learned a new skill, your teacher may have told you to “learn by doing.”  The same is true of travel. You won’t get used to your new surroundings if you don’t try. Start small, maybe a walk around the new area. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either. Yes, some people may be annoyed, especially if you don’t speak the local language. However, there are just as many, if not more, people willing to help you. If you’re staying somewhere long-term, see if there’s a community of expatriates from your native country living in the area. Seek and you will find!

Winter Travel Abroad    December 2021

The time to travel abroad is now with rates so low. Many countries are experiencing off season pricing to encourage tourists’ visits after the holidays. So, start planning your winter trip and take advantage of these tips for your dream vacation abroad. 

London 

The lights, Christmas markets and many visitors have left London in the winter. So many airlines and hotels lower prices to entice more travelers back to the city center. Many of the same activities are available in London in the wintertime. However, be sure to pack for the cold, wind, and a possible London rain shower. An umbrella, rain jacket, hat and gloves are a must!  Some sites have reduced public hours of operation in January and February with days being shorter. However, the crowds will be lighter at sights like the London Eye and British Museum. So, take advantage of the easier foot traffic and enjoy a winter trip.

Netherlands

The air is cold and crisp and it’s a perfect time to see Amsterdam.  The lines are not long at all for tours down the canal or at the Rijksmuseum.  Warm up with homemade hot chocolate in a street side café and see the windmills or Town Square via trolley.  Dressing warm, in layers, is a must.  Despite not being able to see the tulips, the lack of crowds will enable you to see more city life. The savings in airfare and hotel costs will more than make up for the lack of tulips on your trip.

Transportation

While traveling in the winter abroad, be sure to check out easy transportation options such as a rail pass or a ferry ride between countries. Traveling by train or ferry in a sleeper car affords you the luxury to sleep in route to your next destination. You enjoy a good night’s rest ready for a full day of sightseeing when you use a sleeper cabin.  Ticket prices in the winter are off season. Ferry and train amenities are plentiful from full bathrooms in your compartment to an available meal service. It’s a fun way to travel and enjoy the scenery between countries.

Traveling to another country can be intimidating, especially when it comes to interacting with the locals. If you aren’t an expert on local customs or don’t speak the language, you might be worried about embarrassing yourself in front of the locals or even potentially angering them. Thankfully, there are plenty of great ways to meet locals while traveling in a way that can help you really dig into the native culture.

Don’t Impose Yourself

Above all, you want to avoid imposing yourself upon the locals. When many people can be friendly, nobody wants to drop everything and spend their whole day humoring a tourist. Try to read up on local customs before you come, and as the saying goes, when in Rome do like the Romans do. Don’t stand in the middle of the street taking selfies, don’t stand in the middle of the escalator on the underground – don’t stand out as an entitled tourist.

There are actually a bunch of groups online that are dedicated to helping tourists connect with locals. Check Reddit for such groups for the country you’re visiting and see if you can connect with people in advance. You might even make a friend or two along the way.

Eating is about as universal to the human experience as it gets, which means restaurants are a great place to take in some local cuisine and culture. Observe others while they order, and try to emulate them and blend in.

There are a wealth of different apps that can help would-be travelers blend into the country they are visiting more easily.

Airbnb and CouchSurfing allow you to stay at a local’s home rather than a hotel, giving you a more authentic and intimate living experience while you’re in the country. EatWith lets you do something similar, but for eating in with locals eager to share their home recipes with others. Companies such as ToursbyLocals allows you to schedule tours with locals.
