Song Sung Blue, A Movie to Watch
The movie to see this year is “Song Sung Blue.” A true love story about living your dreams no matter what!
Neil Diamond Inspired
Inspired by Neil Diamond, the movie follows Mike and Claire Sardina, artfully played by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. Hudson has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and SAG award. The duo leads a successful tribute band to Neil Diamond in Madison, Wisconsin in the 1990’s. Jackman and Hudson sing the Diamond tunes masterfully. From the feel-good songs to the emotional ballads, all of Diamond’s songs are all covered beautifully.
Tragedy Strikes
Like life, there are many ups and very tragic downs in the Sardina story, we can all relate too. These crisis’s are the moments that speak to us about life’s thin balance between happy and hopeless. The love story is the main focus and Hudson and Jackman provide a personal line into the strong bond of Mike and Claire. All their struggles and joy highlighted by the music of Neil Diamond.
Claire Lives in Phoenix
I was fortunate enough to enjoy the highly rated “So Good, The Neil Diamond Experience,” on January 6, 2026. Claire actually lives in the Phoenix and performed a short song with the lead singer, Richard Neary. Please, take a peak and you won’t be sorry, especially if you’ve seen Claire and Mike’s story. If you haven’t seen “Song Sung Blue” you can stream the real documentary the movie was based on for FREE. Truly an experience you won’t forget.
Claire’s singing from January’s concert is linked here. After watching, you can understand why she is experiencing such interest in her story. You can catch the Golden Globes on network TV on Sunday, January 11th.
2025 Holiday Traditions
As we approach the holidays, old and new traditions are bound to come up during your planning. Depending upon your family and friends, traditions seem to change as you expand your circle.
New Family
A new daughter in law this year gave us the opportunity to host Thanksgiving early. She enjoyed time with both families. The entire family was able to come together to celebrate on both sides and enjoy turkey twice! I feel this new tradition will stick. It was convenient, everyone provided a dish, and we were all happy!
Next year we will have a new baby to welcome to the family…YAY! So, the Christmas traditions will definitely change a bit too. I can’t wait to buy toys and make gingerbread houses again. Plus, children during the holidays is such a fun way to celebrate and create memories together.
Times Change
As travel becomes easier between destinations and families relocate, the changing times create new traditions. Will we celebrate at my son’s home? Will Grandma be hosting this year? What about the new in-laws and their traditions? Many questions need to be navigated to help ease into a new family dynamic. You should uphold traditions that are working and make new ones to meet your needs. Think about new family members, friends, and elderly parents that are not mobile. Consider altering times and holiday activities so everyone can enjoy their time together.
Be Flexible
Flexibility is easier said than done sometimes. Children and older adults usually have strict schedules. But, adapting to others’ needs is temporary during this time of year. For a couple of months, relax bedtimes, meals, and enjoy the season. Have an extra cookie or cup of cocoa when enjoying the crisp winter season. This is the time of year for family and friends to come together and make your traditions a lasting memory.
Milestone Birthdays
Birthdays are the best, even better when you reach milestones in your life. Here is my view of the best birthdays and why everyone’s time line is very different.
When I was 18, my parents threw me a surprise party at the local pizza parlor. All my friends (no parents) were there and I was officially an adult. But the best part was knowing my parents understood what I wanted (my friends) and true surprise of the celebration.
Becoming an Adult
When I turned 21 that was the year I could have a cocktail and would graduate from college. But my grandmother had been killed by a drunk driving during her evening walk a few years earlier. I didn’t drink or want too. However, graduating with honors offered a great job with KRAFT, and the opportunity to live on my own across country. I was learning about life, the good and the bad.
But I missed my family and moved back to Arizona after a few years in the South. Where in a few short months, I met my future husband. At 25 we celebrated my birthday to together and at 26, we were married.
Parent Years
These were the most challenging but happiest years! Right before my 29th birthday, I had our first son. Another baby boy arrived after my 31st birthday. Teaching preschool kept my hand in education and enabled a tight circle of friends, all young moms. We learned about illnesses, TV exposure, (*this was before social media) and our “mom” fears being together weekly. Being a parent opens up your world to more compassion, selflessness, and the needs of others. It is a growing experience for you and your family.
School Years
I went back to work in the library field when both boys were in school. I wanted to pursue my dreams and goals. Earning a Master’s Degree was a great achievement, and my boys were proud! Working hard led to promotions in my field, which provided the example to my children what was possible. Your mindset and perseverance will get you to where you need to go, always.
The Future
What does the future hold? Well, my family is expanding with a new wife and new baby due next year. My sons’ families are happy and healthy as am I. We don’t live in the same cities, but travel has always been my go too. I’m looking forward to the next chapter as exciting and new, just like every other milestone birthday I’ve had these past decades.

Halloween 2025 🎃
Halloween is one of the most fun and creative holidays of the year. Each October 31st, people dress in costumes, carve pumpkins, and go trick-or-treating. But Halloween didn’t start as a night of candy and costumes. It has a long and fascinating history that goes back thousands of years.
The Origins of Halloween
Halloween began over 2,000 years ago with the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced “sow-in”). The Celts lived in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France. Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st, the line between the living and the dead was thin. Spirits could walk the earth, and people lit bonfires and wore costumes to scare them away. (Ever watch Outlander?)
When the Roman Empire took over Celtic lands, they blended Samhain with their own festivals. Later, in the 8th century, Pope Gregory III moved All Saints’ Day to November 1st. The evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, which over time turned into Halloween.
Halloween came to America in the 1800s, brought by Irish immigrants. It started as a mix of fall festivals and ghost stories. Over time, it became more focused on fun and community activities. In the 20th century, trick-or-treating became a tradition, along with haunted houses, costume parties, and the ever-popular pumpkin carving.
Costume Trends in 2025
Costumes are one of the most exciting parts of Halloween. Each year, trends change based on popular movies, TV shows, social media, and world events. In 2025, Halloween costume trends are a mix of classic characters, pop culture icons, and creative new ideas.
Here are some of the top costume ideas for 2025:
1. AI and Robot Costumes
With artificial intelligence being a hot topic in 2025, many people are dressing up as robots, futuristic humans, or digital avatars. Think glowing lights, metallic fabrics, and high-tech looks.
2. Movie and TV Characters
Costumes from 2025’s biggest films and pop culture are everywhere. Popular picks include characters from Marvel’s X-Men reboot, Dune: Part Three, and Disney’s latest fantasy hit. Expect to see lots of superheroes, space warriors, and magical beings.
3. Video Game Icons
Gaming continues to be a major influence. Characters from Fortnite, Minecraft, Zelda, and Final Fantasy are popular among kids, teens, and even adults.
4. Nostalgic Costumes
‘90s and early 2000s fashion is making a comeback. People are dressing as vintage cartoon characters, old-school celebrities, and styles from the past. These “throwback” costumes are both fun and easy to make.
5. Classic Halloween Costumes
Some costumes never go out of style. Witches, vampires, ghosts, zombies, and skeletons are always popular. These looks can be scary, cute, or funny—whatever fits your Halloween mood.
Final Thoughts
Halloween has grown from a spooky harvest festival to a day full of costumes, creativity, and candy. While its roots come from ancient traditions, it continues to change with the times. In 2025, Halloween is more creative than ever. Whether you’re going high-tech, dressing like your favorite character, or keeping it classic, there’s a costume out there for everyone.
So, grab your pumpkin bucket, pick your outfit, and get ready for a night of fun!
Tips to Engage Older Family Members and Friends
Here are some thoughtful and practical tips to help you engage more meaningfully with older people, whether they’re family members or part of your community:
Be Present and Patient
Slow down and give your full attention.
Let conversations unfold naturally—don’t rush or interrupt.
Many older adults appreciate the chance to share stories without feeling hurried.
Ask About Their Life Experiences
Invite them to tell stories about their childhood, career, or past adventures.
Ask open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite memory growing up?” or “What was life like when you were my age?”
These stories often reveal valuable life lessons and create deep emotional bonds.
Share Your Life, Too
Talk about your own life, even the small things.
Older adults often enjoy hearing about current trends, technology, or what’s going on in your world.
Sharing creates mutual interest and keeps the connection two-sided.
Participate in Activities Together
Cook a meal, take a walk, do a puzzle, or look through old photos.
Simple shared activities foster connection and give space for natural conversation.
Choose things that match their energy level and interests.
Show Respect for Their Wisdom
Acknowledge their experiences and knowledge, even when you don’t agree.
Avoid dismissing their views as “outdated.” Instead, listen and ask why they feel the way they do.
This builds trust and honors their role as a valued part of your life
Use Technology to Stay in Touch
If you’re far away, teach them how to use video calls or messaging apps.
Send pictures, updates, or even voice notes to keep them involved in your life.
A little effort goes a long way in reducing feelings of isolation
Be Consistent
Regular check-ins, whether weekly calls or occasional visits, show you care.
Consistency builds a lasting relationship and helps older adults feel seen and valued.
Involve Them in Family or Community Events
Invite them to birthday parties, holiday gatherings, or school events.
Their presence enriches the experience for everyone and strengthens family or community bonds.
Meaningful connection with older adults isn’t complicated—it just takes time, attention, and a little intention
The Importance of Grandparents
In today’s fast-moving world, the wisdom and importance of grandparents can sometimes be overlooked. Yet, spending time with older adults offers countless benefits—for individuals, families, and society as a whole. These connections enrich our lives emotionally, mentally, and socially, offering valuable perspective, unconditional support, and a sense of continuity.
Wisdom, Life Lessons, and Perspective
Older adults carry with them a wealth of experience. Grandparents, for instance, have lived through decades of social, cultural, and technological changes. They’ve weathered challenges, celebrated triumphs, and developed a deep understanding of what really matters in life. When younger people take the time to listen, they gain access to stories, advice, and lessons. Many of which can’t be found in books or online.
Conversations with older generations often provide perspective in times of stress or confusion. Their insight can help reframe problems, offering calm, time-tested guidance. Learning about how they navigated hardship. Whether it was raising a family during economic difficulty or adapting to unexpected loss, can be a reminder of human resilience.
Emotional Support
For many, grandparents are a source of unconditional love. They offer a different kind of support than parents or peers—often more patient, forgiving, and reassuring. Their presence can be particularly grounding for children and teenagers, offering a stable emotional foundation.
Spending time with older adults also helps reduce loneliness for both sides. Many seniors face isolation, especially if they live alone or in care facilities. Regular interaction with younger people can boost their mood, mental alertness, and sense of purpose. In turn, young people gain emotional security and a stronger sense of identity by understanding their family and cultural roots.
Breaking Stereotypes
Socializing with seniors help break down age-related stereotypes. When younger generations see seniors as vibrant, active, and wise, they’re more likely to treat them with respect and compassion. This mutual understanding fosters empathy, combats ageism, and encourages more inclusive, connected communities.
Engaging with older people also helps younger individuals practice patience, better communication, and listening skills. It teaches them to value different perspectives and appreciate the pace and wisdom that often come with age.
Stronger Families and Communities
In families, grandparents often act as anchors—passing down traditions, sharing family history, and helping create lasting memories. In communities, older adults can serve as mentors, volunteers, or storytellers, contributing meaningfully to the lives of others.
Socializing with older generations is not just beneficial—it’s vital. Whether it’s a grandparent or a senior neighbor, these relationships offer connection, wisdom, and joy. In a world that often values speed and novelty, slowing down to listen to and learn from older voices is one of the most rewarding things we can do.
Relationships Are Important as You Age
As we age, the significance of relationships becomes increasingly apparent. While youth often comes with an abundance of social interactions and casual connections, getting older tends to bring a deeper appreciation for meaningful relationships. These connections, whether with family, friends, or partners, play an essential role in maintaining emotional, mental, and even physical well-being.
Emotional Support and Resilience
One of the greatest benefits of maintaining relationships as you get older is the emotional support they provide. Life presents ongoing challenges—health issues, loss, and major life transitions can become more frequent. Having a solid network of friends or loved ones to lean on during these times provides much-needed comfort and resilience. Emotional support helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, which can significantly impact mental health. A strong support system fosters a sense of belonging and helps you navigate difficult moments with greater ease.
Mental and Cognitive Health
Relationships also contribute to mental sharpness and cognitive health. As we age, staying socially active can reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Regular interactions with friends and loved ones keep the mind engaged, offering stimulating conversations, new perspectives, and challenges. Whether it’s catching up over coffee, playing a game, or discussing a book, social engagements help maintain brain health and prevent feelings of stagnation or boredom.
Physical Health and Longevity
There is growing evidence that strong relationships are linked to better physical health. Studies have shown that individuals with close connections tend to live longer and experience better health outcomes than those who are isolated. Companionship encourages healthier behaviors, such as exercising, eating well, and attending medical checkups. Friends and family members often provide gentle reminders to take care of ourselves, whether it’s a daily walk or a visit to the doctor.
The Value of Making New Connections
While maintaining existing relationships is crucial, making new connections as you get older is equally important. Life changes—such as retirement, moving, or the loss of loved ones—can reduce your social circle. Seeking new friendships or rekindling old ones can reinvigorate your social life. Joining clubs, engaging in community activities, or pursuing hobbies can introduce you to new people with shared interests.
As you age, relationships become one of the most important pillars of a happy, healthy life. Maintaining connections with friends and loved ones provides emotional support, improves cognitive function, and enhances overall well-being. Whether nurturing existing bonds or building new ones, staying socially connected is key to thriving in later life.

4th of July and U.S. History
The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, is celebrated annually in the United States. It marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. On this day, the thirteen American colonies declared their independence from Britain. The Declaration was drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson. The document was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4th. From the beginning the Founding Fathers realized separating power would make a stronger democracy for our new country.
History of the 4th
The path to independence was long and filled with conflict. Tensions between the colonies and Britain had been building for years. The American Revolution began in 1775, as colonists sought greater autonomy. Many colonists were upset about taxation without representation and other restrictive British policies. The Declaration was a formal statement asserting their right to self-governance. Independence and freedom were key factors in breaking away.
Early celebrations of Independence Day were held as soon as July 1777. In Philadelphia, festivities included parades, fireworks, and military displays. Similar celebrations soon spread to other towns and cities across the new nation. Public readings of the Declaration became a common feature of these events.
In the early years, Independence Day was primarily a regional celebration. However, it gained national importance over time. By the early 1800s, the day had become widely recognized as a National Holiday. Celebrations evolved to include public gatherings, speeches, and community events. Patriotism and unity were central themes in these early observances.
Parades and Much More
Fireworks, a staple of today’s celebrations, have been part of the holiday since its earliest days. The explosive displays symbolize the revolutionary spirit and the colonies’ struggle for freedom. Parades, concerts, and other public events often accompany the fireworks.
During the 19th century, Independence Day solidified its role in American culture. It became a time for communities to come together and celebrate national pride. The holiday was officially recognized by Congress as a federal holiday in 1870. This ensured that it would be observed across the country every year.
The Meaning
As the United States grew, so did the significance of the Fourth of July. It became not only a celebration of independence but also of American ideals. Liberty, equality, and democracy were often highlighted during the holiday’s speeches and events.
In modern times, Independence Day is celebrated in a variety of ways. Parades, barbecues, and fireworks displays are common traditions across the country. Many cities host large public celebrations, while families gather for private festivities. Patriotic music, including the national anthem, is often performed at public events.
The Fourth of July remains one of the most important holidays in the United States. It serves as a reminder of the country’s fight for independence and its core values. Today, it continues to foster a sense of unity and national pride for our democracy. Let’s remember this important history especially this year.
Memorial Day 2025
Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States, honors fallen military service members. Its origins date back to the post-Civil War era, a time of national mourning and remembrance. The Civil War, which ended in 1865, resulted in over 600,000 deaths. The vast number of casualties created a need for commemorative practices across the country.
The History of the Day
The first large-scale Memorial Day observance occurred on May 30, 1868. General John A. Logan, the leader of a Union veterans’ group, called for a nationwide day of remembrance. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” it was a time to decorate graves of soldiers with flowers. The date of May 30 was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any specific battle. This allowed all Americans to pay their respects on a neutral day.
Decoration Day initially honored only those who died fighting in the Civil War. Over time, it became a broader occasion to remember all U.S. military members who died in service. Following World War I, the scope of the holiday expanded to include fallen soldiers from all American conflicts. In 1971, Congress officially declared Memorial Day a national holiday. It was also established as the last Monday in May, providing a three-day weekend for many.
Focus Today
Memorial Day has evolved beyond its original focus. Today, Americans observe it with ceremonies, parades, and family gatherings. Traditional activities include laying wreaths, raising flags, and holding moments of silence. Many communities also host events to honor local veterans and military families. National cemeteries, such as Arlington, hold special ceremonies attended by government officials.
Over time, Memorial Day has also come to signify the unofficial start of summer. As a result, the holiday weekend is often filled with barbecues, beach outings, and other leisure activities. Some worry this shift distracts from the true purpose of honoring fallen soldiers. However, many people still take time during the day to reflect on the sacrifices made by military members.
Significance of Poppies
One key symbol of Memorial Day is the red poppy flower. Inspired by the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields,” it became an emblem of remembrance. Today, veterans’ organizations distribute poppies to raise funds for servicemembers and their families. My father has been involved in our community with the distribution of poppies.
Memorial Day is a time for Americans to honor those who gave their lives in military service. Its origins in the aftermath of the Civil War have shaped a lasting tradition of national reflection. While its meaning has broadened and evolved, the central theme remains the same — remembering and honoring those who served the country at the highest cost.

Caring for Aging Parents
Caring for aging parents is a journey that many of us take on expectedly. As our loved ones enter the later stages of their lives our own lives change. While it is an opportunity to give back and express our gratitude, it is not without its share of challenges. As I navigate through caregiving, I have come to realize the emotional toll it takes. I also discovered the profound rewards that come with caring for aging parents.
Life Balance
One of the most significant challenges I encountered is balancing my life and responsibilities with the needs of my parents. The demands of work, raising a family, and managing personal affairs can sometimes clash. With the time and energy required to ensure the well-being of my parents it’s hard to think of yourself.
It often feels like a juggling act, constantly trying to find a delicate balance. The give and take of caregiving and maintaining “normalcy” in my own life is tough. It is a delicate dance of making sacrifices, setting boundaries, and seeking support. Whether that support is from other family members or external resources to share the load, every bit helps. Even the everyday joys can help you get through the day.
Emotional Challenges
Emotionally, caring for aging parents can be a rollercoaster ride. Witnessing the physical and mental decline of the ones who once cared for you can be heart-wrenching. It is a reminder of their mortality and our own vulnerability. Feelings of guilt, frustration, and helplessness may come up.
As you grapple with the reality of their changing needs and our own limitations, you get sad. Yet, in the midst of these challenging emotions, there is also an opportunity for profound growth, empathy, and connection. It is a time to cherish the precious moments, celebrate small victories, and deepen your bonds with them every day.
Healthcare Frustrations
Navigating the healthcare system and ensuring the best possible care for your parents is yet another hurdle. The maze of medical appointments, medications, and complex decisions can be overwhelming. Advocating for their needs, understanding medical jargon, and coordinating with various healthcare professionals can feel like a full-time job. It requires patience, perseverance, and the willingness to become an informed advocate for your loved ones.
However, being an active participant in their healthcare journey allows us to be their voice. You must ensure their needs are met and advocate for the quality of life they deserve. Because no one else will.
Rewards
Witnessing the small victories, the moments of joy, and the strength and resilience of people is amazing. It is a testament to the human spirit and the power of love for family and friends. It’s very tough, but worth the rewards.
Caring for aging parents is a journey that tests our limits, challenges our emotions, and stretches our capacity for compassion. It is not an easy path. It is one filled with profound growth and moments of immeasurable grace. As I continue on this journey, I am reminded of this privilege of caring for them. It is a gift that I will cherish.
A Growth Mindset is Important
Learning from mistakes and adopting a growth mindset are important for achieving success in both personal and professional goals. Embracing these principles not only increases resilience but also fosters continuous improvement and development.
A growth mindset, a concept popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck, is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort and learning. Individuals with a growth mindset view challenges as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles. This perspective encourages them to take risks and embrace new experiences, knowing that mistakes are part of the learning process.
Mistakes, while often viewed negatively, are valuable learning opportunities. When individuals make errors, they gain insights that can lead to better decision-making in the future. Instead of dwelling on failures, those with a growth mindset analyze what went wrong and why. This reflective process encourages a deeper understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. This allows them to adjust their strategies and methods moving forward.
Furthermore, learning from mistakes promotes resilience. Instead of feeling defeated by setbacks, individuals can cultivate a sense of perseverance. Each mistake can be reframed as a stepping stone toward success. This resilience is essential in a world where challenges and failures are unavoidable. By developing the ability to bounce back, individuals can maintain motivation and continue working toward their goals.
A growth mindset also encourages a love of learning. Individuals become curious and open to feedback, seeking out opportunities for growth and improvement. This eagerness to learn can lead to the development of new skills and a deeper understanding of one’s field. As individuals continue to expand their knowledge and abilities, they position themselves for greater success.
In addition, cultivating a growth mindset promotes collaboration and support among peers. When individuals are open about their mistakes and willing to learn from each other, it creates an environment of trust and innovation. Team members are more likely to share ideas and take risks, leading to collective growth and success.
Learning from mistakes and embracing a growth mindset are vital for achieving success. By viewing challenges as opportunities for growth, individuals can develop resilience, foster a love of learning, and enhance collaboration. This approach not only leads to personal development but also contributes to a more innovative and dynamic environment. This sets the stage for lasting success in your career and personal life.
Valentine's Day 2025
Valentine’s Day, often celebrated as a day of romantic love, has evolved into a broader celebration of friendship and kindness. While traditionally linked with couples, this day offers a chance to extend love and appreciation beyond romantic relationships. It’s a chance to recognize and cherish the various forms of love that enrich our lives. Whether it's the bond with family, the friendship of colleagues, or the support of close friends, celebrate this year!
Celebrating Love
Valentine’s Day is a perfect reminder that love is not limited to just one type of relationship. While celebrating couples is popular, the 14th can also be about expressing gratitude to those who are important to us. Family members, colleagues, schoolmates, and friends contribute to our happiness and well-being every day. Remember these folks in countless ways, since they also deserve recognition and your love.
Family is often our first experience of love, providing a foundation of support and care. This Valentine’s Day, consider showing appreciation to your parents, siblings, or even extended family members. A heartfelt note, a phone call, or a small gift can make them feel valued and loved.
Co-Workers and Schoolmates
We spend a lot of time with our cc-workers and classmates. These relationships play an important role in our daily lives. They support us in our work or studies, celebrate our successes, and help us through challenges. Valentine’s Day offers a unique opportunity to strengthen these bonds. Consider organizing a small celebration at work or school, where everyone exchanges cards or small tokens of appreciation. This can foster a sense of community and remind everyone that they are valued.
Cherishing Friendship
Friendship is another powerful form of love that often gets overlooked on Valentine’s Day. Friends are the ones who stand by us through thick and thin, offering advice, laughter, and companionship. Take time this Valentine’s Day to reach out to your close friends. Plan a get-together, send a thoughtful message, or even share a meal. These gestures can deepen your connections and remind your friends how much they mean to you.
Valentine’s Day is more than just a celebration of romantic love. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge all the important relationships in our lives. By extending our appreciation to family members, colleagues, schoolmates, and friends, we can spread positivity and strengthen the bonds that make life meaningful. This Valentine’s Day, let’s embrace the full range of love and celebrate the people who make our lives richer. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Relocating Can Be Exciting
Relocating to another state can be an exciting yet challenging experience. The key to a successful move lies in careful planning and execution. Here are some essential steps to ensure a smooth interstate move. From contacting movers to negotiating contracts, these tips will help you with the transition.
Research and Contact Reliable Movers
The first step is start researching moving companies as early as possible. Look for movers that specialize in interstate moves, as they’ll be more familiar with the logistics and regulations involved. Utilize online reviews, ask for recommendations from friends or family. Finally, be sure to verify the company’s credentials through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Ensure the company is licensed, insured, and has a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) number.
Once you’ve shortlisted a few companies, request in-home or virtual estimates. This will provide a more accurate quote based on the volume of items to be moved. Beware of companies that offer lowball estimates, as they might add hidden charges later.
Negotiate and Finalize the Contract
Before signing a contract, thoroughly review all the details. The contract should outline the total cost, services included, & delivery timeline. Most importantly, any additional fees such as packing materials or handling specialty items needs to be detailed in the contract. Don’t hesitate to negotiate the price. Ask if there are any discounts available, such as for flexible moving dates, military service, or AAA membership. Prices will go up, but won’t ever go down, so negotiate ahead of the move.
Pay close attention to the type of estimate provided—whether it’s binding, non-binding, or binding-not-to-exceed. A binding estimate guarantees the final cost won’t exceed the quoted amount, which can provide peace of mind.
Additionally, ask about the company’s claims process in case of damage or loss during the move. Understanding this beforehand will save you time and frustration if issues arise. Read the fine print and be prepared just in case something unexpected happens during the trip.
Plan for a Smooth Moving Day
In the weeks leading up to the move, create a detailed moving checklist. This should include tasks such as updating your address with the post office, transferring utilities, and securing important documents. Declutter your home by selling, donating, or discarding items you no longer need. This can also reduce your moving costs quite a bit.
On moving day, have a bag packed with essentials like toiletries, medications, important documents, and a change of clothes. This ensures you have everything you need during transit, while waiting for your belongings to arrive at your new home.
Stay Organized and Communicate
Maintain clear communication with your movers. Confirm details like the arrival time, delivery window, and any special instructions for your belongings. Keep a copy of the contract and inventory list handy in case of discrepancies. Finally, just being patient and positive with the moving company will help your stress level. Unexpected events can happen out of the ordinary, like weather or traffic which affect the movers’ timeline.
Moving to another state is a significant life event, but with proper preparation, it can be a stress-free experience. By researching, creating a detailed plan, and staying organized, you can ensure your move goes smoothly. This will allow you to focus on settling into your new home.
2025 Is A New Start
As 2025 begins, it’s an ideal time for selfcare that will help you lead a healthier, more balanced life. Rather than making drastic changes that might be hard to sustain, focus on small habits that can make a big impact over time. Here are some tips to start the new year off right with a focus on health and personal growth.
Prioritize Your Health
Good health is the foundation for a successful year. Begin by evaluating your current habits and identifying areas for improvement. Simple changes like eating more fruits and vegetables, drinking more water, and getting enough sleep can improve your well-being. Regular exercise is also essential; it doesn’t have to be intense. Activities like walking, yoga, or swimming can help keep you active while also being enjoyable and stress-free.
Engage in Stress-Free Activities
Managing stress is key to maintaining both mental and physical health. Start by incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few minutes each day to focus on your breath. These simple habits can help reduce stressand promote a sense of calm.
Additionally, consider hobbies that bring you joy and relaxation. Whether it’s reading, painting, gardening, or playing an instrument, have some fun! These activities provide a creative outlet and a break from the pressures of daily life. Spending time in nature is another great way to de-stress. Studies have shown that even a short walk in a park can reduce anxiety and boost your mood.
Focus on Personal Growth
The new year is a great time to set goals for personal development. Start by reflecting on the past year and identifying areas where you’d like to grow. This could be learning a new skill, improving your time management, or working on your emotional intelligence. Setting realistic, achievable goals is important; break them down into smaller steps to make them more manageable.
Reading is another powerful tool for personal growth. Choose books that inspire you, challenge your thinking, or teach you something new. Journaling is also a valuable practice. Writing down your thoughts, goals, and reflections can help clarify your intentions and track your progress throughout the year.
Starting the new year off right doesn’t mean making drastic changes overnight. By focusing on your health, engaging in stress-free activities, and setting achievable goals for personal growth, you can create a foundation for a happier, healthier year ahead. Remember, progress is made through consistent, small steps, so be kind to yourself and enjoy the journey.
Arts and Culture
In schools, arts and culture are like colorful sprinkles on a cupcake—they make everything more fun and exciting! But why are they so important? Let's find out!
First off, arts and culture help us express ourselves. Just like how we use words to tell stories, we can use art to show our feelings and ideas. Whether it's painting, drawing, singing, or dancing, there are lots of ways to let our creativity shine!
And, arts and culture teach us about different people and places around the world. Imagine taking a magical journey through time and space without leaving your classroom! Through art, music, and stories from different cultures, we can learn about traditions, history, and how people live in faraway lands.
The arts make learning more fun and memorable. Instead of just reading about historical events in a textbook, we can act them out in a play. By visually re-enforcing concepts, student show what they’ve learned. This makes learning feel like an adventure and helps with retention of information.
Additionally, arts and culture help us develop important skills. When we work on art projects or perform in a play, we learn to problem-solve, work together, and think creatively. These skills are super helpful not just in school, but also in life!
Furthermore, arts and culture bring joy and happiness to our school community. Picture a school concert where everyone is singing and clapping along, or an art show where we admire other's masterpieces. These moments create special memories and bring us closer together as a community.
The arts can inspire us to dream big and follow our passions. Maybe after seeing a beautiful ballet performance, you decide you want to become a dancer. Or perhaps after reading an amazing book, you're inspired to become a writer. The arts open doors to endless possibilities for students and adults alike.
Arts and culture are like the colorful threads that weave through the fabric of our school experience. They help us express ourselves, learn about the world, develop important skills, and create joyful memories. So, let's celebrate and embrace the arts in our schools—they make our days brighter and our hearts fuller!
My Thanksgiving Recipes
Thanksgiving is a time to come together as a family whether with loved ones or friends to celebrate. What better way to bring people together than a shared meal on a special day. Here are some of my favorite recipes for a traditional Thanksgiving you might like to make and share.
GRANDMA THELMA’S CORNBREAD STUFFING
I like turkey, but I love the Grandma Thelma’s Southern Cornbread Stuffing. This “dressing” goes along with my roasted wing and freezing very well too.
· 1/2 - pound butter - divided
· 1 Tablespoon onion powder
· 1 ½ cups chopped celery
· 9 cups prepared day old cornbread (double this recipe or use 4 boxes of Jiffy Mix)
· 4 slices of day-old bread, (OR bagels, buns, whatever you have on hand)
· 1 Tablespoon poultry seasoning
· 1 cup dried cranberries
· 1 cup chopped pecans
· 2 eggs, beaten
· 2 cups chicken stock - divided
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Butter one 2- quart casserole dish.
In a sauté pan, cook onion powder and celery in 4 Tablespoons of butter until soft and add 1 cup of stock. Simmer for 10 minutes.
In a mixing bowl, combine cooled celery mixture, cornbread crumbled, and bread torn into bite size pieces, poultry seasoning, eggs, pecans, cranberries, and remaining cup of chicken stock. Mix well and add to buttered casserole dish. (Mixture will be “wet” when placed in dish to bake.)
Dot top of stuffing mixture with remaining butter (about ¼ pound.)
Bake for 1 hour at 325 degrees F or until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F and edges are golden brown.
Serve with turkey, pork chops, or BBQ chicken! Freezes up to 2 months wrapped tightly in foil.
I feel every Thanksgiving needs carbs with turkey dinner. But some folks like other Thanksgiving traditions at their gathering. But one if for sure, pie is a universal dessert which makes everyone happy.
PIES
For your favorite dessert make a homemade pumpkin pie or even better a pumpkin cheesecake (for the calcium.)
KATHY’S PUMPKIN PIE
· 1 (9 or 10 inch) unbaked deep-dish pie crust
· 1cup white sugar
· 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
· ½ teaspoon salt
· ¾ teaspoon ground ginger
· ½ teaspoon ground cloves
· 2 large eggs - beaten
· 1 (15 ounce) can LIBBY'S® 100% Pure Pumpkin
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
· Combine sugar, cinnamon, salt, ginger, and cloves in small bowl. Beat eggs lightly in large bowl. Stir in pumpkin and sugar-spice mixture. Gradually stir in evaporated milk. Pour into pie shell.
· Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and continue to bake until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean, 40 to 55 more minutes. Remove from the oven and set on a wire rack to cool to room temperature.
· Serve cooled pie immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve. (Do not freeze as this will cause the crust to separate from the filling.)
Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and restful holiday. Bon Appetit!

Back to School 2024
As summer draws to a close, the familiar routine of back to school calls. Whether you're returning to elementary, high school, or college, being fully prepared is important for a successful year. But what does it mean to be prepared? It's not just about having the right tablet or laptop; it's also about being mentally, physically, and emotionally ready.
Mentally Prepared
Being mentally prepared is like training before a race—it's the foundation upon which all other preparations rest. Mental readiness means a positive attitude, clear goals, and effective time management skills. When you approach the school year with a growth mindset, you're better equipped to handle demands, setbacks, and deadlines. Cultivating resilience and adaptability allows you to navigate any obstacles that may arise, turning them into opportunities for growth.
Physical Preparedness
Just as a well-tuned engine powers a car, physical preparedness fuels your body and mind for the educational journey ahead. This includes getting enough sleep, maintaining a balanced diet, and staying physically active. Adequate sleep is vital, as it enhances cognitive function, your memory, and mood regulation. These are essential for effective learning. Similarly, nourishing your body with nutritious foods and staying hydrated provide the energy needed to excel in the classroom. Regular exercise not only boosts physical health but also improves mental clarity and reduces stress. This is setting the stage for your academic success.
Emotional Support
Emotional preparedness involves resilience and building a support network to weather the highs and lows of the school year. Acknowledge and validate your feelings, whether they're excitement, anxiety, or uncertainty. Seek out supportive friends, family members, or mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement. Developing healthy coping skills, such as mindfulness or journaling, can also help manage stress and promote emotional well-being. Remember, it's okay to ask for help when you need it, and taking care of your mental health is just as important as your academic achievements.
Start the new school year off right by keeping your mind and body in tip top shape this year.
Adding a Pet...When is the Right Time?
Adding a pet to your family is a decision that extends beyond the joy of having a furry friend. The benefits are multifaceted, contributing to the overall well-being and dynamics of your household. Here are the top three reasons why having a pet can be a transformative and rewarding experience for your family.
Unconditional Love and Companionship
One of the most profound reasons to welcome a pet into your family is the unconditional love they offer. Pets, whether dogs, cats, or smaller critters, form deep emotional bonds with their human family members. Their loyalty and affectionate nature create a unique connection that can be a source of comfort and support. The simple joy of coming home to a wagging tail or a purring cat creates a warm and loving atmosphere. Pets foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie within the family.
Promoting Physical and Mental Health
The presence of a pet in the family has been linked to various health benefits for both adults and children. Regular physical activity is a natural outcome of pet ownership, as daily walks and playtime become part of the routine. This contributes to improved cardiovascular health, reduced stress levels, and a more active lifestyle. Moreover, interacting with pets has been shown to lower blood pressure and release endorphins, promoting a positive mood. For children, growing up with pets can instill a sense of responsibility and compassion, enhancing their social and emotional development.
Strengthening Family Bonds and Responsibility
The shared responsibility of caring for a pet fosters teamwork within the family. From feeding and grooming to playtime, each family member plays a role in the well-being of the furry family member. This shared responsibility strengthens communication, cooperation, and a sense of unity. Children, in particular, learn valuable life skills such as empathy, patience, and commitment through their interactions with pets. The shared experiences of caring for a pet create traditions that contribute to a sense of family identity and connection.
Bonus Tip: Tailoring to Your Family's Lifestyle
When choosing a pet, consider your family's lifestyle, living space, and preferences. Different pets have varying needs and temperaments, so selecting one that aligns with your family's dynamics ensures a harmonious and enjoyable relationship.
The decision to have a pet is not just about introducing a new member to the family; it's about embracing a lifestyle that nurtures love, health, and unity. The unconditional companionship, health benefits, and strengthening of family bonds make having a pet a rewarding and enriching experience. Whether it's a playful pup, a graceful feline, or a small, scaly friend, the presence of a pet can bring immeasurable joy and positive energy to your family's daily life.
When Assisted Living is Needed
As our parents age, the question of when to transition them into assisted living becomes a delicate, personal decision. This choice is often intertwined with emotions, practical considerations, and the desire to ensure the well-being of aging parents. Here are three important factors to consider when caring for your parents and making this decision.
Assessing Health and Safety Needs
The primary concern in determining the need for assisted living is the health and safety of aging parents. Evaluate their ability to perform daily activities independently, such as bathing, dressing, and managing medications. If there are signs of declining health, increased frailty, or a higher risk of accidents, assisted living may provide the answer.
Look for indicators such as frequent falls, forgetfulness, or difficulties managing household tasks. Engage in open communication with healthcare professionals to gain insights into your parents' current and potential future needs. Assessing their physical and mental well-being serves as a foundation for making an informed decision about the level of care.
Social and Emotional Well-being
Isolation and loneliness can significantly impact the overall well-being of seniors. I know first-hand, how a lonely parent’s health can decline rapidly. If your parents are experiencing a lack of social interaction, assisted living communities can offer a supportive environment for engagement. Consider the emotional aspects of their current living situation, and evaluate whether assisted living will be a more socially connected lifestyle.
Family dynamics also play a role in this decision. Assess the availability of family members to provide support. Recognizing that the emotional well-being of both aging parents and their caregivers is important and impacts the entire family.
Financial Impact
The financial impact of assisted living is a huge consideration. Explore the costs associated with various assisted living options. You must factor in services, amenities, and potential future healthcare needs. Consult with financial advisors to understand the long-term implications and available resources. You don’t realize how expensive adult care facilities are especially as the level of care rises through the years.
Additionally, assess the practicality of managing the current living situation. If the maintenance of a home becomes challenging, assisted living may offer a more practical solution. Balancing financial concerns with practical daily needs is essential for making a well-rounded decision.
Difficult Nature of the Decision
Deciding when to transition aging parents into assisted living is one of the most challenging decisions a family can face. It requires careful consideration of individual needs, family dynamics, and the emotional well-being of everyone involved. Recognize that this decision is deeply personal, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Open communication, empathy, and involving your parents in the decision-making process can help navigate the difficulties. This ensures that the chosen path supports their wishes and quality of life.
The decision to move aging parents into assisted living is complex and demands thoughtful consideration. By prioritizing health, social and emotional well-being, financial considerations, families can work together. As adult children, you must make choices that prioritize their support, recognizing that the well-being of both parents. It’s not easy, but it’s a fact of life as we all age.
Caring for Aging Parents is Challenging
Advocating for their needs, understanding medical jargon, and coordinating with various healthcare professionals can feel like another full-time job. It requires patience, perseverance, and the willingness to become an informed advocate for your loved ones.
However, being an active participant in their healthcare journey allows us to be their voice. You must ensure their needs are met and advocate for the quality of life they deserve. Because no one else will.
Rewards
Despite the challenges, caring for aging parents also brings immeasurable rewards. It is an opportunity to give back and show gratitude for the love and care provided us throughout our lives. It deepens our understanding of the value of family, love, and the fragility of time. It teaches us resilience, patience, and compassion.
Witnessing the small victories, the moments of joy, and the strength and resilience of people is amazing. It is a testament to the human spirit and the power of love for family and friends.
Caring for aging parents is a journey that tests our limits, challenges our emotions, and stretches our capacity for compassion. It is not an easy path. It is one filled with profound growth and moments of immeasurable grace. As I continue on this journey, I am reminded of this privilege of caring for my parents. It is a gift that I will forever cherish.
Book Review - "My Name is Barbra"
I am finishing up the book review for, “My Name is Barbra.” One thing that struck me as a reality check is celebrities don't have it "made" in life. Rather, they have family issues and emotional insecurities like us all. Streisand's book made me realize you can have all the fame and money in the world and still have everyday setbacks. Here are the lessons learned from music and cinema legend, Barbra Streisand’s 60-year career.
(*If you're lucky enough to get a print copy of the book, enjoy the hundreds of personal photos she includes from her life and career!)
Stand Up for Yourself
Ms. Streisand had to overcome a great deal of prejudice in her career, and not just in the beginning in the 1960’s. As a twenty-year old Broadway star to a 40-something director, she prevailed despite unfair treatment. I love how she was a rule follower, (even when there were no rules) wanting to “do the right thing.”
When she was harassed on a movie set for more than year, she tried to “toughen up” and work with the famous actor. It wasn’t until months later when her health was at risk, the situation changed for the better. No one stood up for her, she had to advocate for herself. Be your own support system and act. If you are in a bad situation, you need to act and stand up for yourself. Her other motto is kindness and she states, "A more important component of the law is kindness." (Stated when she describes harassment and humiliation by another actor.) She goes on, "You should never embarrass someone or make them feel bad." Totally agree - Kindness always matters!
Take Risks
Barbra was a trailblazer from the very start. Growing up without a father since age 8, her mother was overly protective. Barbra learned early on to take risks and do what “felt” right in situations at school and her career. Call it “street smarts” or intuition, she listens to her gut. If she feels something is calling her, like being the first female director of a major motion, she does it! “Yentl” was her first movie of many more directorial credits. “You’ll always regret not trying, and you always lose unless you do try!”
Keep Learning
As we get older your experiences provide wisdom and learning opportunities. Hard work was always a pillar of Barbra’s success, along with learning new aspects of show business. She went from night clubs, to Broadway to movies to behind the camera. She kept learning for herself and for own curiosity. This growth mindset keeps her open to new opportunities along the way. She found love again in her 50’s by pushing herself past her shyness in social situations. Keep learning to stay healthy!
To sum up, the details of Barbra Streisand’s career is fascinating. But overall, she took chances, nurtured her talent, and pushed beyond current norms to build a very successful career. Strong women would love her story and might also see aspects of themselves in her life and lessons.

Making the Holidays Memorable December 2023
Holidays are more than just dates on the calendar; they are an embodiment of culture, values, and cherished memories. As societies become increasingly diverse, the opportunity to integrate new holiday traditions into celebrations such as Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah arise. Embracing these traditions not only promotes inclusivity but also enhances the richness of these festive seasons. Here's how to thoughtfully integrate new holiday customs into these celebrations.
Embrace the Spirit
Begin by embracing the spirit of curiosity and openness. Learn about the diverse cultures and traditions that are relevant to the holiday you are celebrating. Understand the historical significance, rituals, and values associated with each tradition. This knowledge lays the foundation for meaningful connections.
Blend Culinary Delights
One of the most enjoyable aspects of holidays is the food. Incorporate dishes and recipes from various cultures into your holiday feasts. Whether it's adding a Kwanzaa-inspired dish to your Christmas dinner. Or you can include a Hanukkah specialty during Boxing Day. Culinary fusion can be a wonderful way to honor multiple traditions.
Share Stories
Holidays are an ideal time to share stories and teachings from different cultures. Incorporate storytelling sessions where each family member or guest shares a tale from their heritage or a tradition. This not only educates everyone about new customs but also fosters a sense of unity.
Meaningful Gifts
When exchanging gifts, consider selecting items that hold significance in the traditions you're integrating. This could be a book about the principles of Kwanzaa, a symbolic ornament from Hanukkah, or a handmade decoration that represents a cherished Christmas custom.
Volunteer and Give Back
Many holiday traditions emphasize the importance of giving back to the community. Integrate this value by participating in volunteer activities. These should align with the principles of the holidays you're celebrating. This not only integrates new customs but also embodies the true spirit of the festive season.
Encourage Dialogue
Create an open space for discussions about the new traditions you're integrating. Encourage family members and friends to share their thoughts, feelings, and questions. This fosters a sense of inclusivity and promotes a learning environment.
Respect and Sensitivity
Above all, approach the integration of new holiday traditions with respect and sensitivity. Ensure that the customs you're adopting are authentically represented and celebrated. Avoid cultural assumptions by engaging in thorough research and consultation with members of the respective cultures.
Finally, integrating new traditions into celebrations like Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah is a way to honor diversity and foster understanding. By embracing a spirit of exploration, culinary fusion, and respectful engagement, you can create festive season for everyone.
New Thanksgiving Traditions November 2023
As the holiday season approaches, I think of memories of past Thanksgivings. My family would spend time cooking and filling our home with laughter. Yet, this year, there is a subtle but undeniable shift in the air—a desire to change our Thanksgiving. Is it time to embrace new experiences?
When do you make those changes to your traditions? How do you create lasting memories that reflect your evolving values and priorities?
Coming Together
For me, Thanksgiving has always been about coming together with family and friends. We share a feast (usually turkey and my cornbread stuffing) and express gratitude for the blessings in our lives.
These familiar customs have been an anchor, a comforting thread that connects us to generations past. However, as life unfolds and circumstances change, it becomes important to adapt and find new ways to celebrate and connect.
The decision to change our Thanksgiving traditions was not made lightly. It involved open and honest conversations with family, each expressing their expectations. We acknowledged that traditions should not be stagnant but should grow and evolve with us.
We collectively embraced the idea of including fresh elements that reflected our shared values. We want to enjoy the holiday and respect one another’s different ideas of togetherness that Thanksgiving represents.
Community Service
This year, we decided to organize a community service project as part of our Thanksgiving festivities. Instead of spending the entire day in the kitchen, we will dedicate time to serve others at a community home.
Our family’s aim is to extend our gratitude to the wider community and make a positive impact who need it. The joy of giving back will undoubtedly deepen our sense of gratitude and reinforce the spirit of Thanksgiving.
Core Traditions
While service is a new addition to our Thanksgiving, we remain committed to preserving the core holiday traditions. The gathering of loved ones around a table with traditional family recipes will always be at the heart of our celebration.
We will continue to savor the flavors that evoke childhood memories and ignite conversations about family history. Again, I’m referring to my Grandma’s stuffing recipe, that I make only once a year.
The idea of changing Thanksgiving traditions may initially stir mixed emotions. As we bid farewell to familiar routines and ideas of what the holiday should, it’s time to discover something new.
However, the essence of Thanksgiving lies not in the specific rituals, but in the deep connections we have and the love we share. By embracing change, we open ourselves up to the possibility of discovering new traditions that resonate with our present selves. Will you be making any changes this year? A new host or maybe try a community project?
Ultimately, changing Thanksgiving traditions is an opportunity to deepen the bonds we share with our loved ones. Making sure to honor values and embrace the spirit of gratitude in new and meaningful ways for your current lifestyle. Here’s an invitation to create lasting memories that reflect who we are today.
As I embark on this journey of change, I am filled with excitement and a little anticipation. I know that our Thanksgiving celebration will continue to evolve and grow. Be sure whatever our plans, you foster a sense of belonging, love, and gratitude. This will remain with your family and friends long after the holiday season fades away.

From the excitement of starting elementary school to the challenges of college, being prepared is key to a successful journey. Here are some useful tips to help elementary and college students get ready to start the school year off right.
For elementary school students, setting routines is important. As the transition from the relaxed days of summer to the structured school setting can be overwhelming. It's important to gradually reintroduce routines a few weeks before school starts. Set consistent bedtimes and wake-up times to help children adjust to the school schedule. Creating a morning routine that includes tasks like dressing, eating a healthy breakfast, and packing their backpacks. All this can be done the night before to help eliminate morning stress and ensure a smooth start.
Preparing the necessary supplies is another vital aspect of getting ready for school. For elementary school students, it's essential to stock up on the basics such as pencils, erasers, notebooks, and crayons. Check the school's supply list and make sure to include any specific items requested. Involve your child in the process of selecting their school supplies to help them feel excited for day one.
College students face a different set of challenges when it comes to getting ready for school. Time management and organization skills become increasingly important. Encourage college freshmen to use tools like planners or digital calendars to keep track of assignments, exams, and extracurricular activities. Establishing a study schedule and creating a designated study area at home can also help students stay focused. Also maintain a healthy balance between academics and other commitments such as sports and clubs.
In addition to organizational skills, college students should also consider their long-term goals and aspirations. As they embark on their higher education journey, it's important for students to start thinking about their future. Encourage them to explore interests, engage in extracurricular activities, and take advantage of any opportunities for career exploration or mentorships. Starting early on this path can help them make informed decisions about their career paths, leading to a more fulfilling and successful future.
Whether it's the first day of elementary school or the start of college, preparing is a vital step towards success. Establishing routines, gathering the necessary supplies, and developing time management and goal-setting skills are essential for students at every level. By focusing on these areas, students can enter the school year with confidence. They will be ready to embrace new challenges and make the most of their educational journey. With the right preparation, the school year ahead holds countless opportunities for growth, learning, and personal development.
Picking the Right Puppy August 2023
Picking the right puppy is a big decision for any family, as the choice you make will be with you for many years. When selecting a puppy, it's important to consider a variety of factors. Here are few tips to get you started on your puppy research.
Right Age?
First and foremost, it's important to choose a puppy that is the right age for your family. Puppies require a lot of attention and training. Very young children may not be equipped to handle the responsibilities of caring for a young puppy. It's generally recommended that children be at least 6-8 years old before bringing a puppy into the home.
Dog Breed
When it comes to selecting a dog breed, there are many factors to consider. Some breeds are better suited to families with children than others. Dogs have different temperaments, sizes, and energy levels. For example, breeds such as Labrador Retrievers and Beagles are known for being friendly, loyal, and good with children. On the other hand, breeds such as Chihuahuas and Dalmatians may not be as well-suited for families with young children. These breeds high energy might not be a good fit for young family members.
It's also important to consider the energy level of the breed. Some breeds, such as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds, require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. While others, such as Bulldogs and Basset Hounds, are more laid-back and don't need as much activity.
Another important consideration is the size of the dog. Larger breeds may not be suitable for families with small children. These dogs may accidently knock kids over or be too rough playing. Smaller breeds, on the other hand, may be more fragile and may not be as well-suited for active families.
Allergies
When selecting a puppy, it's also important to consider any allergies or sensitivities that family members may have. Breeds that shed less, such as Poodles and Bichon Frises, may be better suited for families with allergies. There are many versions of “doodle” dog breeds that have poodle DNA to help with the shedding too.
Plus, don’t forget about checking with your local dog shelter, for your next furry friend either. All great companions can come from many different places. You save a life when you rescue any animal.
Ultimately, the most important factor when selecting a puppy is to choose a dog that is a good match for your family. Your lifestyle and other factors play into keeping and caring for a pet for many years. Take the time to research different breeds. Also visit with potential puppies to get a sense of their temperament and energy level. With careful consideration and planning, you can find the perfect puppy to become a beloved member of your family. (Check out my photos of Maisy, our 2 year old Boston Terrier!)
Gardening in the Desert - July 2023
The desert, with its scorching sun, arid climate, and sparse vegetation, may seem like an unlikely place to garden. However, with the right knowledge, techniques, and a touch of creativity, it is possible. To create a flourishing garden in the midst of a dry landscape like my home in Arizona can be done. Starting a garden in the desert opens up a world of possibilities, and here’s how to start that new world.
One of the basic aspects of desert gardening is water conservation. In arid regions, water is a precious resource that needs to be used efficiently. Drip irrigation systems, which deliver water directly to the plant roots, are particularly effective in minimizing water wastage. Mulching is another essential technique that helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing the need for frequent watering. Using organic mulch such as wood chips or straw not only conserves water but also improves soil quality over time.
The choice of plants is crucial when it comes to desert gardening. Native plants that have adapted to the harsh desert conditions are often the best options. These plants have evolved to withstand extreme temperatures, limited water availability, and high levels of sunlight.
Some popular desert plants include cacti, succulents, desert marigolds, and agaves. These resilient plants not only thrive in the desert but also add a unique beauty to the landscape. Their striking shapes and vibrant colors add so much to a desert garden.
Creating microclimates within the garden can also significantly improve the chances of success. Positioning taller plants or structures strategically can provide shade and create cooler, more sheltered areas. Building raised beds can help improve drainage and prevent water logging in the desert's compacted soils. Additionally, constructing windbreaks using fences or hedges can shield delicate plants from the harsh desert winds. This minimizes water loss through evaporation and reduces plant stress especially in the summer months.
Starting a garden in the desert requires patience, experimentation, and a willingness to adapt. (Kind of like life!) It is essential to monitor the garden regularly, observe how different plants respond to the environment, and adjust. Learning from your successes and failures of each gardening season will help refine your techniques. This will increase your chances of creating a thriving oasis in the desert.
Starting a garden in the desert may seem like a daunting task. However, with careful planning and using appropriate techniques, it is possible to transform barren landscapes into vibrant havens of life. Focusing on water conservation, suitable desert-adapted plants, and creating microclimates, gardeners can overcome the challenges presented by the dry environment.
Desert gardening allows us to connect with nature. And enables us to appreciate the incredible resilience and beauty of life in even the most challenging conditions. So, roll up your sleeves, grab a shovel, and embark on the journey of creating your desert garden. This a true testament to the triumph of life in adversity!

History of Father’s Day
The History of Father's Day Father's Day originated in the United States and was first celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. It was started by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was inspired to create a special day to honor fathers.
After hearing a Mother's Day sermon at church, the rest is history. Dodd's father was a single parent who raised six children on his own. She felt that fathers deserved the same recognition as mothers and slowly it took hold. The idea of Father's Day slowly gained popularity in the early 20th Century. Finally, in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. However, it wasn't until 1971 President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father's Day national holiday,

Travel Trends to Try This Summer May 2023
Have you asked yourself, what is my dream vacation?
As we recover from two years of travel limitations due to covid, new vacation trends have emerged. Here are some tips to use if you are booking a summer trip this year. Keep in mind travel has changed and some countries still have public health restrictions in place.
Bucket List Travel is Popular
People have not traveled for fun in over two years, and many can’t wait. Booking agencies are seeing an uptick in lifetime “dream vacations.” In other words, what’s on your travel bucket list and when can you go! Budgets are not limited this summer, so book that dream cruise or European destination early for the best seats and accommodations. Unique all-inclusive resorts are also more popular this year, so you can truly relax and unwind with less hassle.
Family Vacations Across Country
In the United States, National Parks are a huge draw this summer. Many parks are requiring reservations and are filling up fast. Renting RV’s or taking extended family along is a common theme of summer vacations this year. Glacier National Park in Montana is already limiting visitors by car and many activities are booked. Make plans now, for family travel if you’re including children and must book alternative transportation, such as an RV.
Volunteer Vacations
While we’ve always been able to enjoy ourselves in vacation, many organizations are seeing an increase in volunteerism especially during overseas travel. With limited resources, climate crisis issues, and the reality of the pandemic, urgency for social change is in the forefront. Why not teach your children about the world and improve it while you travel? Many organizations are available to help with your passion project and many more are now accepting temporary volunteers. Beach clean-up, animal rescue, and native plant rehabilitation are just a few experiences to share with your family this summer.
You are only limited by your imagination, so make those plans and enjoy this summer with a new travel experience.
Happiness Prescription April 2023
I just finished a new library book focused on happiness; The Good Life: Lessons from the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness. Two doctors relate through short stories the simple ways to increase your happiness, based on an 80-year scientific Harvard study. Here are the simple, proven ways to find happiness in your life every day.
Increase Positive Relationships
It goes without saying, that when you feel good physically, you feel good mentally. You need to increase the frequency and quality of the positive relationships in your life to be happy. It doesn’t have to be friends or family either that make you happy. The authors relate the positive interaction with a bus driver who makes your commute easier daily. Or how about the teacher who helps your child overcome learning obstacles, which helps you and your family. When you interact and connect with others that “lift you up,” your happiness increases.
Get Rid of Distractions
A distracted mind is unhealthy for your mental well-being and physical health. For example, have you ever worried so much about something that has never happened? You wasted time and energy for nothing. The authors suggest keep your focus by clearing your mind of past mistakes and future worries with meditation.
Meditation calms your heart rate, breathing, and allows your mind to focus on the present and to be in the moment. Being in nature helps with focus as does removing yourself from negative people. (An overlap from the first point made about increasing your quality relationships.) The authors remind us that the more you practice, the easier it becomes.
Social Media Engagement
Finally, the authors don’t dismiss social media, but rather supply the research to back up the positive engagement of online platforms. The 2020 pandemic is a perfect example of the damaging social isolation we all experienced. When we lack the social (in person) interaction with others it is damaging to our well-being. Studies have proven (in Norway) that when children engaged on social media they were happier. This versus just scrolling through and “liking” a post. Social engagement even online benefits your health and happiness for all ages.
Simple but proven ways to keep your mind and relationships healthy and active throughout your life. Finally, staying curious and continuing to learn is a simple way to be happy, no matter your age. Money does not make you happy, but being grateful does. The insights in Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz’s book showed me how happy I really am too!
Spring is Here! March 2023
Spring is finally here in Arizona and I'm enjoying the mild, cool weather and all my flowers in the garden. My garden, in zone9b, loves the below average temperatures, (it should be in the 80's but will only reach 68 degrees today.) Stay tuned for a more flowers from other parts of the country. I'll be bringing Spring to you where ever you may be reading from very soon.
Wishing my friends down under a mild fall and winter as they enter their changing seasons too. But just a quick note to wish everyone a happy Spring from the desert southwest in the United States. May your garden grow and bring you great joy!
What Learning Style is Best? February 2023
Throughout school and work, you’ve been told what your best learning style is to retain information. Now research has shown that you have learning preferences, which we all can benefit from. Here are ways to spot what works for you and what needs a little more practice.
What is "VARK"
Many learning models break down the way people organize and store information into four main categories. Those are categorized by your four senses: Seeing, Hearing, Reading, and Doing or Touching.
You learn differently depending upon the subjects being taught too. The learning style may vary depending upon the complexity of a topic also. Remember how math was easier for you than reading in school?
New research has shown that students or workers learning more complex topics, need more than one method to learn. And retaining and repeating the processes learned is beneficial when multiple senses are used in the teaching process.
What’s Best for You?
Assessing your best method of learning can be easy with a simple test. Or, as we have seen during the pandemic, human beings adapt to their surroundings. Students, workers, and institutions modified learning, meetings, and processes to assist with the new normal.
Many of those organizations never looked back either. But we also saw a decline in test scores in our younger students during the lack of in-person instruction.
So, we go back to what is the best learning style? The answer is “it depends.” It depends on the student, their resources, the sustainability of the teaching, etc.…
Being adaptable to your environment and having the ability to learn multiple ways is best for most people. Resilience and a growth mindset are traits that are important is any type of learning and in most situations.
Variations of Learning
Now we’re learning from our past experiences, there can be anywhere from 3-170 variations to these basic four styles above. Understanding how and when you learn best is really an efficient method for students or new workers learning a job.
As we continue to embrace remote work and school, understanding your best learning style is the path to success. Wishing you all the best on your learning path!
Listening is so Important Especially in Families January 2023
Listening skills are probably the most important skill behind reading. Learning to listen, and actively hear what is said is also essential. Below are steps to take if you need help listening to what people REALLY say to you.
Active Listening
Active listening is hearing the other person for understanding. However, most of us listen to be able to react or frame a response quickly. Don’t do that! Don’t listen for yourself to answer, listen to understand. You will gain far more insight into your speaker, by letting them talk. Hear what words they choose and how they say those words. Active listening takes effort, but you learn far more about what’s said when you are engaged and hearing the other person.
Body language
So, you’re probably thinking, but I’m on the phone, and can’t “see” my speaker. But you can! Listen for inflection, tone, and the speed of the speaker’s speech. Usually, someone upset or in “fight mode” will speak quickly and emotionally. Someone calm and measured in their speech is under control of their emotions. When you are at work, even remotely, you can listen and pick up ques in the person’s speech.
A rational speaker is usually easier to understand motive, even over a phone call. Body language goes beyond “seeing” the speaker but again actively listening to “how” the speaker is engaging with you.
Responding After Listening
You are now asking, so when DO I need to respond? If you have an upset friend and listening to them about a bad experience, sometimes never. No response is a response in this type of situation. As humans, we want to solve problems, but sometimes it’s best to just listen. Listening with an open mind and heart to fully understand the other person takes a lot of effort.
And sometimes you might never understand the person’s motives or true feelings, but you were there for them. Sometimes just being a friend and confidante is all that is needed in the moment, and active listening is key.
Practice makes permanent, so try just listening for a change. Don’t interrupt and truly listen to the other person on the phone, on Zoom, or sitting with you. The more you practice actively listening, reading body language, and understanding your listener the better you become.
When Is It Too Early for Christmas Decorations? December 2022
Do you struggle with managing all the holiday tasks coming up, especially the week of Thanksgiving? Have you been wanting to put up your holiday decorations before serving the turkey this year? It might be good to listen to your inner voice and break away from the “norm.”
Be Happier This Year
According to research, having fond memories of holidays past makes you happier every time you recall those times. Why not pull out the Christmas or Hannukah décor early and evoke those warm, happy times again! Are you afraid you’ll be judged? Is it not what your mother did or the “traditional” thing to do? Be happier this year, decorate on your timeline, not someone else’s.
Make It Easy on Yourself
This year, we have the standard four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you’re like me, I’m usually rushed to pack away my fall pumpkins and bring out the holly. Make it easy on yourself and relax! I didn’t listen to tradition, and I pulled out my tree and garland last week.
My tree and decorations have been up for more than a week, and I’m thawing my turkey for Thanksgiving. Now I can relax and enjoy the festive décor longer and so can my Thanksgiving guests. It’s our new family tradition, and it makes me happy.
Outdoor Decorations?
If you’re struggling with breaking from your normal routine, of “after Thanksgiving” decorations, go slow. Take it one step at a time and let your family’s other commitments guide your decision. For me, having the inside decorated and letting my family know, “it makes me happy,” works for us! You might consider just decorating the outside, like half my neighborhood has done. You can put up a few decorations that make YOU happy, so there is not a mad rush after Thanksgiving. You decide.
Ultimately, the holidays are about family and bringing people together. You should never feel pressure (one way or another) to conform to any self-imposed tradition. Make yourself and your family happy put those decorations up on your timeline!
Happy Thanksgiving and hope this week bring you peace, joy, and some yummy leftovers.

Three Traditions to Reconsider This Thanksgiving November 2022
Do you and your family and friends gather for a traditional Thanksgiving? What does traditional mean these days during the holidays? Here are some traditions the media provides and how to rethink what “tradition” means this year for our planet.
Turkey at Thanksgiving
We have all endured high food prices with inflation this year. We are paying 30, 40 and sometimes 50% more for the same products this year! The average turkey this year will cost about $1.99 per pound, up 73% from last year. Instead of turkey, does your family enjoy other main courses?
Consider lower cost cuts of meat or vegan options which also help the environment and our climate crisis. Have you considered enjoying vegetarian sides without a main dish protein? A recent study in the United Kingdom states every meal without meat you save about 30% on your grocery bill. The ethical reasons to eat vegan are also important. Just consider the lasting effect for our children and grandchildren when you pass on turkey this year. Check out Pinterest for some yummy alternative recipes this year.
Black Friday
Shopping has changed over the years. I remember standing in line to buy a coveted gaming system or the “must have” toy for my kids. Deals for the holidays now start as early as October and feeds into society’s need for consumption.
I do not stand in line for anything anymore, especially for retailers to take my money. I think before I purchase. Again, consider the environment and the actual usefulness of a product before you buy it. Think about upcycling items to prolong their use. Finally, think about the money you save when you stop overspending and buying needlessly every holiday.
Time with Family
The holidays, especially Thanksgiving, is a time to be with your family. I’m thinking the Hallmark movie with the happy ending. But, like real life, families are complicated on so many levels. You should never feel pressured to be with someone you don’t feel comfortable with, family or not.
You need to enjoy your holiday while still having boundaries especially from those who love you. So, what I’m saying is, it’s okay if you shake things up and try something new this year. Have Thanksgiving dinner at lunch time this year. If the weather permits have your meal outside on the patio or better yet at a close friend’s home. If there is a neighbor that is alone this year, invite them to enjoy your celebration. The holidays should bring peace and comfort to you, not stress and chaos.
We need to understand that kindness and tradition go hand in hand. Make your own traditions this year and enjoy the holidays on your terms.
Halloween Costumes October 2022
Halloween is right around the corner, and that means dressing up in costume for some people. Check out some ideas to make your next Halloween costume easy, fun, and friendly for all work environments.
Traditional Halloween
When you think Halloween you think, pumpkins, witches, zombies, and monsters. These costumes will work, but what if you work in a school, nursing home, or other public setting? You need to be mindful of toy weapons, fake blood, and scary costumes. These props don’t always translate well for all crowds.
If you decide to dress up in a traditional costume, make sure your clothing is modest without toy knives or guns. Keep blood and gore to a minimum too. Finally, make sure your costume (including hats and shoes) allows you to move freely. You need to be comfortable and still be able to do your job Halloween day. Have fun, but also think of others.
Pop Culture
Another idea for a fun Halloween costume is what’s trending on Instagram or Tik Tok. Usually popular streaming shows, like “Stranger Things” or classic television like the “Flintstones” or the “Grinch” are hits. These costumes are popular with families and large groups to coordinate with a theme.
Be mindful of the time involved to gather props, even if you’re dressing up like a simple TV character. Begin your search now, so come October 31st, you’ve got all the items you need to complete your costume.
The NO Costume, Costume
I’m referring to folks that don’t like dressing up, but still want to participate in work or school costume contests. You either didn’t give yourself enough time or decided last minute to dress up. Here is a list of easy to throw together DIY costume ideas to try last minute:
1. Tourist – Hawaiian shirt, camera or lei, shorts, sandals, and a straw hat
2. Pirate – White shirt, black pants, red bandana, and a stuffed parrot if you’ve got it
3. Ghost – Come on, do I have to tell you about the sheet with holes?
4. Librarian – Pants or skirt, cardigan sweater with a broach or bow tie, glasses if you’ve got them, carrying a stack of books. Don’t forget to “shush” people all day if you must.
These are just a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Check out Pinterest for more Halloween costume ideas and have a ball this year dressing up!
Healthy Work Life Balance September 2022
With the pandemic came a greater need to understand work life balance and how it affects families. Read on for ideas to keep your career on track and a healthy balance at home.
Stop Multitasking
Women are more prone to multitask more than men. However, none of us can complete two tasks at once. You end up doing two tasks, half-way or having to redo something else. In other words, focus on one thing at a time. Whether it’s answering email, phone calls, or watching your kid’s soccer game. Do one and only one thing at a time.
You’d be amazed how much you can accomplish if you concentrate on one task, complete it, and move on. I’m a mom too, so I understand the feelings. Stop multitasking now for a healthier lifestyle.
Make a List
Write down what you need to do. Whether it’s in your google calendar, a paper list, or in Notes; write it down. When you write something down, it gives your brain permission to move on. You are not “holding on” to the item in your head. You can clear the way for other tasks that come up.
It might be important to pick up dog food or prepare for a work meeting but don’t give each task equal importance. Write it down and cross it off when completed. Have a work list and home list to keep things simple or color code your task list.
Plan Time to Relax
Just as you would plan for your work meeting, block off down time at home. As a super achiever this is important, so you don’t burn out. Self-care and taking time for yourself is the most important task you can do for your family and you.
Your immune system will thank you and your gratitude level will increase with self-care. If you find it difficult to “unwind” check out some reaffirming daily reminders to help. Having reminders of what you have, (not what you don’t) is the very best method to find peace in life.
Pets
Finally, get a dog or cat for companionship. Research has shown that petting a dog or cat reduces a human’s anxiety level immediately. Pets are relaxing and allow you to focus on something other than work or other distractions. Taking care of an animal opens up empathy for other creatures and nurturing skills.
Happiness Hacks Proven to Work July 2022
After the past two years, we are all looking for happiness and contentment in our post pandemic lives. Read on for simple happiness hacks that are proven to work to bring joy into your life.
Social Connections
Creating social connections and other positive habits, research has shown, rewires your brain toward positivity and success. Known as positive intelligence, the research points to happiness and consistent habits leading you toward your successful outcomes. It can be as simple as journaling three happy thoughts of gratitude. In addition, reaching out to your friends and family to find support has shown to improve happiness levels. Give it a try for a few weeks and see the results. Think what you could gain.
Gratitude
In addition, this habit leads to the next hack which is showing gratitude daily. No matter your circumstances, you have reasons be grateful. After reading the book "Thank and Grow Rich" from an article I read in Elephant Journal, my life was changed. The simple exercise of looking for the positive and being grateful every day is easy to make a habit. The book is filled with funny, well-written, real-life examples of the world opening up when you show gratitude. Just like the saying goes, “Open yourself up and the world provides.” Or something like that. You get the idea. Finally, when you look for the positive, good things do happen.
The book entitled, The Secret is also written along the same lines. While this book is more spiritual in nature, the message is the same. However, you need to be grateful and mindful by asking the universe for exactly what you want. It then presents those to you. In other words, the opportunities show up to fulfill your needs. It's that simple.
Resilience
Finally, another common aspect of happiness is resilience. If nothing else, the pandemic has given us skills to succeed in the face of uncertainty. These skills build a resilient mind, body, and drive you to keep moving forward. Furthermore, resilient people are happier, more confident and see the positive even during difficult challenges. This has been proven, no matter your social standing or economic means. It’s like any muscle, to build it up, you need to use it! Building a resilient attitude will lead you to a happier and more content life.
Give a few of the happiness hacks a try and practice them daily. You will be glad you did!

More Time for YOU! June 2022
Does time seem crunched as we get back to new routines in work and at home? Gaining more time is easy by changing habits and repeating them. Read on for ideas to streamline the new normal and gain more time for you!
Get More Time Back at Work
Manager tested tips to gain more time at work are as simple as blocking off your calendar or making task lists. Other time saving tips need more behavioral change from you to make the change and form a habit. Planning ahead the night before or tackling more challenging tasks first thing in the morning will give you a sense of accomplishment. Starting the day off with a win, no matter how small, will set you up for success.
Furthermore, plan for the unexpected everyday especially at work. What this looks like is making sure you have at least 15 minutes between meetings even online. Those buffers will help if you have unexpected responsibilities come up or need to take a call.
Feel More Relaxed at Home
At home, provide a buffer of time between commitments for the unexpected traffic jams or other mishaps. Tasks like picking up the kids or dentist appointments will leave you feeling more relaxed when you allow more time. In other words, over-estimate travel time, waiting in line, etc. Also find the positive in your task, making it more enjoyable and less burdensome.
Finally, slow down and provide your attention to each task at hand, one at a time. Multi-tasking does not work since each responsibility gets half of your full attention. Even if you need to de-stress and take a quick walk outdoors to calm down, do it! Taking a few extra minutes to regain focus is much more important than driving recklessly or making a decision under duress.
Practice Saying No
Just because someone asks you to do something, does not mean you have to say yes. Practice saying no, to extra commitments that don’t bring you joy or help you with other goals. Some tasks like carpools and school are “must do’s.” However, that extra project at work, bake sale at church or dog sitting for neighbors can be negotiable.
Setting healthy boundaries will keep your most valuable resource, your time, more your own. Try out a few “No’s” over the next few days or weeks and see what happens. You will thank yourself. It becomes easier the more practice you give yourself.

Unique Graduation Gifts May 2022
Do you need an idea for a graduation trip? Are you interested in a unique memory for your recent grad? Here a few ideas to get your creativity flowing for a trip that won’t bust the bank and create memories.
Train Travel
In the United States, think about traveling by train to Boston or Chicago and experience a luxury train ride. Check first for routes and schedules in the United States on Amtrak. Overseas, trains run in most countries on much more frequent schedules. Upgrading to a sleeping berth, will get you to your destination in style while enjoying the countryside. Dining and hotel-like amenities are available and are worth the extra cost for a long trip. Train travel is a fun unique way to meet other tourists and might be safer than flying currently if you’ve got a solo berth.
Cross the Country by Car
For even more personalized travel experience take your grad along on a cross country car trip. This gives you the flexibility of stopping whenever and wherever you choose. Combine the trip into visiting your dream locale or relatives you’ve not seen in a while. Being in a car together encourages great conversation and irreplaceable memories. This might be the last long trip you take together. So, why not take U. S. Route 80 or Interstate 44 for few days of driving fun.
Enjoy Your Hometown
Finally, with the recent surges in Covid, a staycation might be the best and safest grad trip this year. Do you live near a beach, museum, or large park? Research current operational hours and make a huge event or even a long weekend of your time together. Check out that special restaurant for lunch or dinner. The experience should be memorable for both of you, and something to share.
If you live in a rural area, think about a long weekend in the nearest city. Try something new and explore what the city has to offer. Maybe a unique garden or art exhibit is more something you’d both enjoy. Whatever you plan, make is special, and make it about your graduate’s recent accomplishment.
The last two years have been trying and exhausting. So, by normalizing and celebrating your graduate with a special trip and acknowledgement, you’ll both be creating a memory together. Let me know your plans for your next getaway!
Easy Mothers Day Gifts April 2022
Mother's Day is Sunday, May 8th this year!
Ever wonder what to get mom this year for Mother’s Day? Gifts can be tricky, especially as Covid continues and visiting might be tricky. Read on for ideas on the easiest Mother’s Day gifts to please any mom or grandma this year.
Mom’s Day Out
Is your mom an art lover or cooking expert? Come up with a day filled with your mom’s favorites. I’m talking about a trip to her favorite museum or art exhibit and then a picnic lunch. Maybe take a cooking class on expert baking tips or preparing a special dish at your home together. For example, my family makes tamales for the holidays. Learning this traditional dish many years ago, with my mom’s technique was priceless and gave me a great new skill. What day can you create that your mom will never forget?
Trip to the Park
If Covid restrictions are still in place in your area, what about a day at the park? Even if it’s just the two of you, think about her favorite foods and bring along alfresco fixings for lunch. If you have grandchildren or even pets who can tag along, even better. Think of some fun hide and seek or a nature scavenger hunt games that are easily played in your park. Maybe a long walk with the dog or a visit to a rose garden would make her day. Again, get creative to make a memorable day outdoors with the one she loves…you!
Letter of Love
If mom lives far away and getting together is not an option, think about a thank you letter to her. Even moms in assisted living have caretakers who can read them letters from their children. Thank mom for the support and love she provided you while growing up. Think of a special memory and put it in writing for you both to remember year after year. It’s amazing what kids remember and how differently moms could recall the same event. Take some time and craft a letter and make sure to keep a copy for yourself. You will thank yourself that you have those memories written down as time moves on.
If mom isn’t here any longer, take the day to remember the good times. Time is fleeting and our moms gave us the ultimate gift...the reason to breathe! We need to celebrate life and the love they provided. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and grandmas out there and make it special in your own way.

Decision Making Made Easier March 2022
Ever wonder how some people make big life changing decisions so easily? Do you struggle taking the first step for a life-changing decision? In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, read on for tips to make the decision-making process a bit easier and less stressful.
Do Your Research
Doing your research should be the first step in any decision, big or small. You don’t need anything complicated but learning the facts regarding your decision is very important. For example, understand the cost involved owning a pet, before you adopt one. Learning about a company before you accept a job offer. Some things you are not able to learn, until you are in the situation, such as work culture. However, asking questions of various contacts in your network is important research to help with your choice. Do as much as possible for a well-informed decision.
Consider Your Expectations
Next, what are your expectations for the outcome of your decision? What do you envision after you make the decision: to change jobs, have a child, or move across country? You need to keep your expectations in check. You also need to realize that nothing will be perfect after your decision is made. Blind spots are just that, you don’t know what you don’t know. Understand, your support system and family are important. They have objective eyes on your situation and will help you with feedback, whether you want it or not. It’s important to accept feedback as a “reality check” before, during, and after your decision is made.
Stuck?
If you are not able to decide, then don’t. No action is a decision, and the status quo is sometimes better than making an even worst mistake. You might be experiencing a greater block, such as depression. Don’t make major decisions while depressed or in a state of anxiety. This is recommended since you are unable to distinguish the facts from your feelings. You might need to seek out a counselor for help. Getting enough sleep, avoiding alcohol, and learning about your vulnerabilities will help you understand your mental state. Seek out help before you act on an important choice. Finally, understanding that you are not in the right frame of mind to decide is so important. Patience and time will help you navigate the right path for you!
It's Tough Caring for Aging Parents February 2022
Did you think once you got your kids off on their own, your caregiving duties were behind you? I sure did, until my parents and in laws reached 75 years old. It can be tough caring for aging parents. The following tips are what I wish I knew then, and hopefully can help you:
Role Reversal
It took two medical emergencies for me to fully grasp that the tables were now turned. Be prepared for parenting your own parents, and dealing with child-like behaviors. Warning signs to get more involved in your parents’ care include memory problems, poor decision-making skills, and personality changes.
Changes in personality can include excess shopping, hoarding items, excessive eating or sleeping. These can all be signs of depression or a deeper emotional need that is not being fulfilled. Many times, older adults that have retired and lost their purpose don’t even realize they are depressed or lacking purpose.
Communication
Speaking with your parents early on and knowing their lifestyle will help you determine if their priorities have changed recently. If you don’t live in the same city or state, make sure to keep in touch via Zoom or regular phone calls. Being on top of their habits is important to keep seniors focused on their health and realizing possible limitations.
Communication also includes knowing your parents’ close friends, neighbors and other people who can provide support in a crisis. My family keeps a binder with all medications, doctor appointments, and lab results handy. This way, anyone can easily access medical information in an emergency. I wish I had a binder when I had to call the fire department for my father. One of the first questions asked is, “What medications is he taking?” Having an up-to-date binder in a common area of the house is important.
Empathy and Patience
Above all the most important aspect of caring for your aging parent is having patience and a lot of empathy. You might be dealing with toileting issues, memory loss, or just plain denial of reality with your parents. They are the child, and they will act like it!
Remembering to speak calmly, with simple words, and repeating items is often helpful. Having extra help is also going to make your job and the decisions you make easier on everyone. Support groups are easily found in most cities, so check them out if you need someone to lean on.
Above all, know that you will be in a similar situation at some time down the road. Kindness goes a long way and is always remembered.
