Kids are stressed. Teachers are stressed. Mindfulness in the classroom can help! Studies show that the benefits of mindfulness may include: Increased focus, self-control, classroom participation and compassion, as well as improved academic performance and ability to resolve conflict. Mindfulness can decrease levels of stress, anxiety, and disruptive behavior. In this workshop, educators will learn ways in which mindfulness can easily and realistically be incorporated into their classroom with age-appropriate breathing, movement, art, journaling, and meditation activities. Educators will be encouraged to participate in these activities so that they have a true understanding of the effectiveness of mindfulness within the classroom setting, as well as walk away with new tools and resources to utilize.
Two four-hour sessions can be offered—one with an elementary-level focus and one with a secondary-level focus; however, teachers of any level may join either or both sessions as most activities can easily be adapted to any age level. Activities from sessions will not overlap; teachers wishing to do both sessions will walk away with over 20 new ideas!

"I had the opportunity to take Kacie Recla Shaffer 's Mindfulness in the Classroom on Zoom. What an amazing class filled with so many beneficial activities to teach not only mindfulness and yoga but also creating connections and art. If you have the opportunity to take one of her classes, I highly recommend it. Thank you, Kacie! I loved it so much!" -Amy Rasmussen, First Grade Teacher, Vale Elementary School, Vale, Oregon
"I had the opportunity to attend Kacie Shaffer’s mindfulness in the elementary classroom workshop. I teach first grade and I walked away from the day with many tools that I can use in my every day classroom practices! She did a fabulous job of teaching us useful breathing techniques that will work for whole class activities as well as for helping individual students calm down from tough situations. Her art activities will be beneficial in helping students tune in to their feelings and identify emotions. She added in easy to use chair yoga moves that can be used without moving furniture in the classroom and having kids try to manage space while trying to focus on their yoga. I appreciate her teaching style through it all as we got to practice each activity that students will do. This was a very beneficial workshop! I highly recommend Kacie’s workshops!" -Katie Burright, First Grade Teacher, Greenwood Elementary School, La Grande, Oregon

We've all heard that analogy about the oxygen mask-- you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself first. Educators are natural caregivers who not only take care of their students in the classroom but often their own families and friends outside of the classroom. More so than ever, educators need to make their social-emotional wellness a priority. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn a little about the importance of self-care, set intentions, take time to breathe, move their bodies, and indulge in total relaxation. Participants are encouraged to participate in all activities for their own well-being; however, many of these skills can also be used in the classroom to help students with their social-emotional health. This workshop will provide educators with guided breathwork practice, a yoga session, and a teacher-led meditation for deep relaxation. Dress comfortably and get ready to relax!
Materials Needed: yoga mat (optional: yoga blocks, blanket, pillow, eye mask, essential oils.)
Note: Participants will be asked to participate in a yoga session with standing poses; dress comfortably.
