Structured Literacy- The in class application of The Science of Reading.
Structured Literacy is a foundational practice in the classroom. It allows for me to communicate to them in a way that is explicit. Through Structured Literacy, I can provide clear, direct instruction for each student based on their needs. Students master foundational skills before moving to complex tasks. A strong foundation sets students up for success.

Scaffolding guides students through gradual release to execute successful, indivdual completion of a learning goal (Create 10 realistic sketches of the nose).
Teacher circulates and assists, reteaching and/ or guided demonstration (we do) if needed.

Explicit Instruction reduces the rate of error. It does not give students the ability to be wrong, as what is expected is presented explicitly.
*Lesson 1 in Symbolism Unit*
Students learn vocab word (Symbolism).
Explicit vocab strategies to teach definition (turn and talk, What might rain symbolize?, What is a symbol for anger?).
Artist examples of symbolism.
Students create list of traits about their identity, then think of symbols for each trait.
Students create their OWN symbolic self-portrait.
