Local Hardwoods

Years ago I started to mill my own lumber using a chainsaw mill. Click on the link below for some photos. I get logs from the local WNY area, often through Sean Mort of Lewiston, a friend who is a certified arborist. If you need any tree work done, I recommend you give Sean a call. Using my chainsaw mill I've milled over 4000 board feet (BF) of cherry, red and white oak, walnut, black and honey locust, red mulberry, ash, and maple. I stack the lumber outside for six to twelve months to air dry to about 14% moisture content and then dry it to 6 - 8% moisture in a dehumidification kiln I built. See the link below for some photos. Most of the furniture I now build use this wood. I really enjoy cutting open a log - it's like opening a Christmas present - and feel good about saving some wood from the landfill or fireplace.

In 2019 I decided to get a bandsaw mill to speed up the milling process. Open the folder "Bandsaw Lumber Mill" for additional information. I also built a solar kiln for drying lumber. It can dry about 700 bf of either green or air dry lumber per load. .
