After students presented their wonderful identity museum exhibits in the morning, we enjoyed some "movie theater treats" in the afternoon as each student read an excerpt from their personal narrative to celebrate the "mind movies" they created in their writing this fall! You can also view of a video of the publishing party here!
We enjoyed an AMAZING musical and storytelling performance at the Logan Center for the Arts: "Weaving Identity: A journey through Colombian & American stories and music." Jasmin Cardenas was an incredibly storyteller and shared her personal experience growing up Colombian-American in Chicago as a little girl. It was a great capstone experience to our unit on identity! Enjoy the photos, or open the folder of "November Photos" above to find a video clip of the performance!
Our class enjoyed an incredible learning experience on three guided art tours last week:
The Día de los Muertos exhibit at the National Museum of Mexican Art
A walking mural tour through the Pilsen neighborhood
A tour and scavenger-hunt–style exploration at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art
Students examined how artists communicate identity through color, symbolism, storytelling, and cultural traditions. They compared pieces across murals, sculpture, folk art, and contemporary work, noticing how place, heritage, and personal history shape artistic choices. All three tour guides gave incredible presentations. We also paused for a well-earned lunch at Antique Taco, where students enjoyed delicious Mexican dishes. Thank you to all of our chaperones for supporting us and making this experience possible!
