Born: Taieri Plains, February 28th 1891. Son of David Thomson and Mary (nee Johnstone) Shand, sheepfarmer of Broadacres station. His grandfather, William Shand, arrived in New Zealand in 1858, being one of the first settlers in Dunedin and Taieri Plains.
Educated: Wylie's Crossing, North Taieri and Otago Boys High School [Dunedin].
Commenced his career gaining agricultural and pastoral experience with Donald Macdonald on Edendale Estate for two years. Joined Mosgiel Woollen Mills, where he gained experience in wool classing and then as sub-manager to Malvern Downs Ltd., owners of Morven Hills and Malvern Downs stations, where he remained two years. Also worked on Te Akatarawa and Black Forest stations.
Purchased Glenroy Station on Kawarau River and sold same seven years later.
Acquired his present property, Maritanga Station, situated on the Maniatoto Plains, where he specialises in agriculture, dairying and Corriedale sheep.
Justice of the Peace, Sheep farmer, Owner of Maritanga Station, Kokonga, Central Otago, New Zealand. Member Executive, representing Otago Branch, New Zealand Sheepowners' Federation; President 1935, Otago and Southland Sheepowners' Industrial Union of Employers; Member, New Zealand Farmers Union; President, Maniatoto Ratepayers Association; Member Otago Chamber of Commerce; Member Otago, Taieri, Maniatoto, and Royal Agricultural and Pastoral Associations. Elected to the Committee of the NZ Meat Producers Board representing Otago, 1932, 1933, 1935.
Married: Margaret Rattray Douglas, daughter of John Fleming Douglas, sheep farmer, of Waihao Downs station at Waimate, N.Z., and Boolookooroo station, Gunnedah, New South Wales, December 19th 1922.
Issue: One son, John Gordon Thomson [Shand - in his retirement he lived in Arrowtown]; and one daughter, Margaret Patricia [Macilree, nee Shand].
Clubs: Fernhill, Dunedin Jockey Club, Otago Motor Society, Aero Club, Masonic, Lodge Arrow Kilwinning No.86.
Recreations: Shooting, tennis, golf and travel. Represented his school as captain of shooting team.
Politics: Coalition.
Creed: Presbytarian.

"On August 19th [1917] an Army Reconnaissance was carried out over the Carniste-Valandovo area [near Salonika?], the BE2c machine being escorted by a two-seater Nieuport (110 Clerget) attached from the French Aviation. This reconnaissance machine was attacked by an Aviatik which was immediately engaged by the Nieuport. In the course of the combat the French pilot, Lieutenant Ducas and the English Observer, Lieutenant Shand were both wounded. They, however, succeeded in driving off the enemy machine and returned safely to their Aerodrome."
