This drill is designed to teach the players on the offensive linemen proper blocking techniques.
After demonstrating the individual moves have players execute the moves individually and then in progression.
Monitor hand and feet position at each phase of the drill
Blocking Shields
Split into multiple small groups and have coach demonstrate the initial moves of an offensive lineman, one step at a time, starting from a good 3-point stance.
Initial Moves of a blocker
Power step—take a short step with the back foot by pushing off hard with the front foot. Repeat just this first step. Have players execute the first step several times. Stress staying low (Z’s in the knees)
Quick step—next take a quick short step with the other foot maintaining a wide base with the feet. Repeat putting step 1 and 2 together.
Attack Hand contact—Bring hands up to number height with thumb tips touching, making firm contact with an imaginary defender. Repeat putting all three steps together in a smooth continuous move. Stress head up “See What You Hit” and “Z’s in the knees”
Fit and Freeze with Defender
Add another player as an upright defender to the above drill and have the blocker make the initial move then freeze after contacting the defender. Check heads up, short steps and proper hand position. After several reps have the blocker execute the complete sequence by drive blocking and controlling the defender.
