Eugene O'Neil's Play "Long Day's Journey Into Night"
After watching the film Long Day's Journey Into Night, students in the department took part in an activity where they performed scenes from the play of the same name. The play was written by the famous American playwright Eugene O’Neill.
The students carefully chose certain parts of the play to act out, bringing the characters and emotions to life. This exercise gave them the chance to engage more deeply with the story and understand the struggles of the characters. By performing these excerpts, the students were able to explore the themes of family, addiction, and personal pain that are central to O'Neill’s work.
The post-viewing exercise allowed the students to connect the film to the original play and see how the story translated from stage to screen. It was an opportunity for them to express their understanding of the play’s complex characters and themes through acting.
Poetry Recitation:
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth
As part of their study of Neo-Classical literature, students took the time to recite poems that focused on the key ideas found in William Wordsworth's famous poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud. This poem is known for its celebration of nature, the beauty of the world, and the emotions it can stir in us.
By reciting poems that reflected similar themes, the students were able to explore the ideas of nature's power to inspire and comfort people. Wordsworth’s poem talks about how the beauty of daffodils in nature can lift the speaker's spirits and stay with them even when they are alone. Through this exercise, the students not only practiced speaking poetry but also gained a deeper understanding of how poets in the Neo-Classical period valued nature and emotions in their work.
The activity helped the students connect with the ideas in I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud and think about how nature and its beauty can impact a person’s feelings and thoughts. It was a chance for them to engage with the themes of the poem and understand why nature was such an important subject for poets during that time.
