Reflection:
For my modalities lecture II class I was able to do a service learning project for The Children’s Center Utah. The first part of this project came before I even chose to work with the Children’s Center. First, I was able to learn about many community partners in our area. This will be helpful information as I start my career. We’ve learned in school about the importance of helping our clients find the community resources they need.
Working with the Children’s Center was a wonderful experience. We provided the center with a presentation on sensory modulation for their staff and a pamphlet on the same topic for the parents. Spending so much time diving into sensory modulation was an important connection to learning. It’s a topic we covered in our pediatric class and doing this project was a great supplement to that. I enjoyed learning about the center and the community of people that it serves, and I was able to learn more about the challenges facing the families in that area. I believe that I will be a more empathetic clinician from this experience.
One connection to an OTA program outcome objective was the improvement I made in professional communication. The outcome states, graduates will be effective in verbal, written, and non-verbal communicators with patients, peers, and others. During this assignment I was able to work with a group of peers which increased my confidence in sharing my ideas. I was also able to meet with professionals at the center and present to them, which grew my confidence of verbal communication and presenting to a group. These will be skills that I can generalize in so many areas of my life, schooling, and career.
