Reflexion:
I participated in a social determinants of health project. With a group of fellow students, we researched the topic of diabetes and wrote an original case study. I was able to practice research skills and learn new ways of finding and documenting resources. Understanding research articles is an area I feel weak in, so this was a wonderful growing experience for me. Over the course of this assignment, I was able to find, read, and summarize three different articles. This gave me much needed practice in this area.
One course learning outcome objective is to be able to describe the impact of multiple contexts (social, cultural, economic, demographic) on the provision of occupational therapy services. We addressed all these items in our case study. This helped me see the connection between these areas in the OTPF and helped me see even more about how occupational therapy is about treating the whole person. Another connection I made was to the information we learned about in lectures about diabetes. It was helpful to gain even more knowledge that I can use in the future as a clinician.
Another of the OTA program outcome objectives is, graduates will be effective in verbal, written, and non-verbal communicators with patients, peers, and others. This assignment brought me closer to that goal. I was able to work with a group which increased my confidence in sharing my ideas, especially those pertaining to clinical reasoning. I got more practice working on shared documents and using written communication. These will all be skills that I can generalize in so many areas of my life, schooling, and career.
Overall, this was a helpful experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I am grateful for the experience.
