Course Description:
OTA 1170 Physical Dysfunction Fieldwork I is a one-hour/week lecture and thirty hour clinical site
experience. Lecture prepares for the off-site experience and future fieldwork IIs by requiring academic
& practical competency-based assignments. The externship will be arranged and take place at clinical
facility sites within the community under the direction of an academic fieldwork coordinator. Emphasis
is to expose students to a variety of diagnoses and to develop professional behaviors and clinical
observation skills. This is a designated service-learning course.
Reflection: I really enjoyed my fieldwork experience. Adult physical dysfunction is not my first choice for employment after graduation, so I was surprised when I enjoyed so many aspects of it. I knew I would enjoy connecting with clients and seeing them make progress, which I did! But I was really worried about the medical setting portion of it. That is an environment that I don’t have any experience in and worried it would be uncomfortable and interacting with clients would not come naturally. That was not the case, it came much more naturally than I had thought. And although there are still ways that I feel intimidated about lack of knowledge, I am confident that by graduation I will know what I need to know. I already know so much more than I did during that first fieldwork rotation. If I did end up working in this setting, I could really enjoy it and I think I would do well at it. That is such a wonderful feeling!
