Current music technology has allowed virtually anyone to produce their own music. Sure, technology has made music production accessible to the majority, but it is no way a substitute to skills training. On this blog, DJ-producer James Haidak shares the five qualities essential for music production success.
Being a music producer isn’t for the faint of heart. Among the five qualities one must possess in order to make it in the industry is patience. Producing excellent music requires countless hours in the booth. From recording, to mixing and mastering, to marketing, a producer must have the patience to stay on top of the all the processes. Attention to detail sets great work apart from good work.
Training the ear to listen critically and analytically, pinpointing nuances, and bringing the song where it needs to cannot be achieved by merely giving attention to detail. Focus is a quality that is nonnegotiable among music producers. Developing focus can be difficult, especially to those who are just starting out. Focus is usually partnered with discipline. Consider taking things slowly and surely, commit a block of the day to work on a project, and let go of any distractions.
Many successful producers did not grow up to have the best music education, but whose work tell otherwise, shares James Haidak. A constant drive to learn and do better pushes producers to keep going and keep producing. While the music industry can be a ruthless arena at times, it is mostly one that is nurturing and uplifting, especially to those who are passionate and persistent.
