The Fae are native to the mortal plane and take an active interest in their local area, sometimes residing in them for hundreds of years. They are more morally grey craving offering and reverence which sustain them with power less than bloodshed. A forgotten fae may retreat into its nest and stay dormant for long periods of time until stumbled upon again, but an adored fae with many offerings can grow incredibly powerful. A powerful Fae may feel an ownership of its ‘devotees’ and territory and fiercely defend it leading to many dangerous encounters.
Pixies are classified as small, humanoid Fae creatures with magical power, the most populous of the Fae. Some may mistake the mischief of a Pixie for an Imp, however, their source of magic is not Evil in nature and appears to be rooted in the mortal plane similar, but not identical, to the power a Priest could evoke. Often, Pixies are seen to have slim dragonfly like wings, however there are many subspecies of Pixie that do not have such features. Treated right their mischief turns to playfulness and even helpfulness.
Subspecies: Brownies, Leprechauns
This term applies for Fae creatures who can turn into another form. Werecreatures do not come under this name as their origin is through curse, rather than lineage as Shapeshifters are. They are often stunningly difficult to find and have a 'favourite' form. Changelings prefer a humanoid form, Boggarts prefer a more monstrous one and Mimics prefer the inanimate. Many Shapeshifters are chaotic in nature, the more practised they became in their favoured form the closer they stray to humans, conducting ill natured pranks at best and body-snatching unsuspecting victims and murder at worst.
Subspecies: Changelings, Boggarts, Mimics
One might mistake a Banshee as an undead creature at first glance. These horrifying Fae are omens of death, ragged clothes, bloody hands and tear stained faces and spawned from land where innocent blood has been shed. The sound of languished crying means it is already too late for most, their mourning must never be disturbed. A disturbance of these grieving Fae can only be repaid with an offering of their choice or else the banshee will stalk a victim and torment them with promise of a certain doom.
The best way to describe this broad category of Fae is that of a nature spirit. They have different names in many different cultures, dryads, nymphs, elementals but here in Aynca they are known collectively as Fimmerkin. Often separated into Erdenkin; spirits of the earth, Vaskin; spirits of the water, Waldkin; spirits of the woods, Brisekin; spirits of the air. The word Fimmerkin comes from the Proto-Verdan meaning 'Foverer kind' relating to the fact they are exceptionally long lived. because of this, some Fimmerkin will attach themselves to a place for centuries and are exceptionally stubborn to move, even territorial.
Subspecies: Kelpies, Wickerbacks, Dryads, Faerie Dogs, Will-O-The-Wisps
Trolls are similar to Fimmerkin in the sense they are heavily bound to the earth element but they are not Erdenkin. These elusive and shy Fae live in groups avoiding the daylight. Don't mistake their introverted nature for harmlessness, an enraged Troll is exceptionally dangerous and steps must be taken to avoid angering these Fae.
