Instead of paying to play the role of a Jaeger, you instead step behind the scenes with Game Team and bring the world of Jaeger to life through many NPC (non-player character) roles, such as villagers and other inhabitants of the world. If you want to become a 'full time' crew member you can take on some reoccurring NPC roles that are pivotal to the plot, for example: playing the big bad Necromancer who will take several events for players to hunt down and kill, or a Noble who has befriended the Jaeger and often visits them in the field.
As well as this, you will also take on the role of monsters who fight against the Jaegers. Some of these monsters can be as simple as getting painted up as a skeleton, wearing a raggedy robe and going out with a sword who go die after taking three hits. However, there will be some greater monsters that could take ten times the amount of hits, and will have specialist costumes made for them - for example, a fully padded werewolf suit with LARP claws.
You get the opportunity to take on a variety of roles and get a broader view of the game and its plot. Monstering is great for those who may not want to fully commit to a player character yet, possibly because they aren't sure what type of character to play, or they're new to LARP and don't want to invest into character kit, or because you get more joy from bringing the game to the players!
Whatever your reason, monstering is an incredibly rewarding experience - and you get some bonus perks, such as full catering and where possible, an indoor bunk for the weekend. Where possible, we will always try to keep monstering free, but catering will always require a small payment and will be discounted by being subsidised through player tickets.
Yourself, a couple of sets of base thermal layers, dark neutral tone base LARP gear (tunic, belt and trousers) and any kit you think will fit into the setting (but don't stress if you don't have anything!).
As Jaeger grows event to event, we hope to create a healthy bank of costume pieces that monster crew can pull from to create the required looks for different roles.
To start with, however, we aim to have some more generic kit that covers most of the bases. For example, a small collection of shirts, trousers, skirts, jackets and cloaks to outfit peasants to nobility. We may have some flashier pieces for important NPCs, but we will build on that over time.
For you, if you have kit that you'd be happy to share (or keep for yourself, we understand) please bring it with you and we can find a way to make it fit into the game.
We will use makeup (usually Snazaroo), latex prosthetics and spirit gum as part of a lot of monster kit. If you are allergic to any of these, or prefer to use your own makeup, please bring your own and keep them separate to the communal kit.
If you are new to LARP, please do not stress on bringing extra kit. Focus on the basics, and keeping warm.
Sometimes you may be in the monster room for a while, so bring things to keep you warm and entertained!
